  1. They might be on the instructionals roster? Is that a different team? Boise's season ends this weekend, before instructs starts. I'm guessing Vogelbach didn't get the promotion only because there are already 2 first basemen at Boise who are very good NWL-level players (Cuneo and Hoilman). This is almost certainly correct. Is Hoilman just Justin Bour redux, or is there any reason to be a tiny bit optimistic?
  2. And Colvin's defense is just a hair better. But, that said, if the Cubs are counting on Colvin as a future corner OF starter at this point, they aren't paying attention. He's a cheap filler option for another year or two, but it's hard to see him becoming more - even when looking at the normalized BABIP figures.
  3. Laying the groundwork for next year's scapegoat, after Zambrano becomes this year. Beloved stars of the last 20 years: Mark Grace, Kerry Wood, Ryne Sandberg Run out of town: Sammy Sosa, Carlos Zambrano, soon-to-be Aramis Ramirez. If I were Starlin Castro, I wouldn't be making plans to retire here. Don't forget Carlos Silva and Milton Bradley. Heroes in their own time.
  4. General Motors? ....aw. Damn.
  5. And yet they do. Which is a bummer for the current crew.
  6. I just want to reiterate here, like I do in the post, that it's just a rumor from UNC's Scout site. A poster, who appears to be a regular contributor, says Maples left football practice today saying he'd signed with the Cubs. I know nothing more than that.
  7. Just taking the optimistic outlook here, but maybe they didn't spend quite as much as they thought they would to get some of the bigger names and were able to go a little higher in other places (like the Shoulders signing)? Just a guess, since I'm hoping they got a bunch of those bigger names. Could be the freed up money of not signing Ricky Jacquez. Which I'm speculating just based off of his tweet. His later tweets say things like "you never know," suggesting he could still go either way. I tend to think he and Dunston have already made their decision (in one direction or another), and are just having some fun with the process a la the lead up to "Signing Day" in college football. I say good for them. Have some fun.
  8. Well, Rocco Baldelli was a pretty big jerk, so that's understandable.
  9. So we've been down 2 or more runs in the 9th 173 times in basically 2 1/2 seasons? Yikes. We've lost 159 games by 2 runs or more in that timeframe, so it makes sense. I'm impressed that the Cubs managed to score at all 14 times in those games.

    Walks

It's an organizational issue. Look at their minor league affiliates: Iowa ranks last out of 16 teams in the PCL with 353 walks. Top team (Tacoma) has 515. Tennessee ranks 8th out of 10 teams in the Southern league with 361 walks. Top team (Jacksonville) has 464, bottom team (Mississippi) has 353. Daytona ranks 9th out of 12 teams in the FSL with 333 walks. Top team (Bradenton) has 446, bottom team (Clearwater) has 285. Peoria ranks 15th out of 16 teams in the Midwest league with 297 walks. Top team (Lansing) has 431, bottom team (West Michigan) has 286. That is absolutely painful to read.
  11. Indeed. Including to the Cubs. Negative implications.
  12. He's also been around long enough to watch the Cubs chew up and spit out those same men. I believe Gillick can see what a challenge this organization is and would want no part of it. You could have just as easily written, "I believe Gillick can see what a challenge this organization is and would want a chance to be the hero."
  13. Heyman kind of lost my trust when he referred up front to "catcher Jeff Baker" (which, of course, has subsequently been fixed). It's hard to feel like someone who could make that mistake is THAT tapped into the Cubs.
  14. Here's an article about the signings from Bleacher Nation (not the execrable Bleacher Report): http://www.bleachernation.com/2011/07/27/the-chicago-cubs-may-be-on-the-verge-of-adding-yet-another-top-high-school-draft-pick/ Good to see you're a reader. Bleacher Nation is actually ran by our very own AceCubbie. In my biased opinion, one of the very best Cubs blogs out there. I didn't plan on Cubs being motivated enough to sign Jacquez to what he was wanting given his injury issue. Now, I'm excited at the possibility of adding him. Thanks, Scarey. I do what I can.
  15. I'm glad you pointed that out. Sorry about that. I wouldn't want my site confused with the other either. Thought the format looked different. No problem. If it were any site but Bleacher Report, I probably would have chuckled and moved on. Thanks for posting the link.
  16. Bias or not....accurate portrayal of Bleacher Report. I rue the day three years ago that I named Bleacher Nation without being aware of the similarly-named, aforementioned steaming pile.
  17. I have to point out: Bleacher Report and Bleacher Nation are two very different things. The former is, generally speaking, a steaming pile of crap comprised of slideshows, imagined trades, and grammatical errors. The latter is a relatively popular Chicago Cubs blog.* That post above is from Bleacher Nation, not Bleacher Report. *Admitted bias: I write Bleacher Nation.
  18. It's not just that he got Karros and Grudzielanek. In the same deal, he got rid of Todd Hundley. Got rid of a cancer in exchange for two starters on a division champ team. Probably not his best trade, but it might be his most underrated. Not mentioned so far, I think... Bradley for Silva. Should Hendry really get credit for trading Bradley for Silva? That'd be like patting him on the back for signing Silva in the first place (had the Cubs signed him).
  19. Who wrote the code for that game? When would Marlon Byrd ever lead the NL in homers? Does the Show place far too much emphasis on beefy biceps?
  20. That is hilarious. Well put.
  21. Hendry and Gillick are very good friends? I'd heard that they were "friendly," but, I mean, are we talking about family dinners together? Or hellos in the elevator? It makes a big difference.
  22. I'll bet 100 million dollars he will not be the Astros GM in 2012 according to wikipedia he's from houston. that's the only reason they'd have any shot, i think. that being said, he's gotta be a hot commodity and if he wants to move on from tampa, one would think there are higher-profile positions that will be open. not to mention that the astros are a bad team with a moribund farm system. And their next owner isn't going to spend any money. While I agree with the sentiment (Friedman seems unlikely to head to Houston), ownership not spending money wouldn't be anything new to him. Separately, I can't think of too many "small market" type GMs who've had success transition to a big market, big money club. I'm not saying they don't exist, but only the disastrous ones (like Minaya) are coming to mind.
  23. It's going to take at least 10 years to revamp the organization? I could make an obvious joke... No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that, because the org will be going through a revamp, you'd like to have the guy who led that revamp be in charge for an extended period of time AFTER the revamp. Otherwise, the changes/attitudinal shifts/etc. could just fall by the wayside after the guy leaves.
  24. I doubt Levine would be this explicit - especially after being a bit obtuse about the issue over the past couple months - unless he'd received crystal clear confirmation about Ramirez's 2012 option. That said, the possibility of a vested 2012 option is only one of the two primary hurdles to a deal. As stated earlier in the thread, his no-trade rights remain an issue. And, because that 2012 option still exists, Ramirez could leverage his no-trade rights to make this vesting/not vesting discussion wholly academic - in other words, he could say, "I won't accept a trade unless the receiving team picks up my option."
