  1. Really? I mean, I could see not liking this - it's necessarily fluffy - but I've always been a big fan. Good writer, good perspective. Thoughtful, nice, etc. He's one of the few Granland writers I consistently enjoy.
  2. Wow, yes, very ambitious. I can't help but notice Blake Parker listed at $2.5 million - I assume that's a type.
  3. Would be funny if, after making such a stink about all the teams in on Soler, the others, one-by-one, say they're not interested at the price expected to be paid - namely, something in the upper $20 million range from a team like the Cubs?
  4. Really? I had the same three thoughts when I read his quotes.
  5. If it was a big league deal, then we likely are on the hook. Completely forgot about that. I doubt anyone will claim him because if there was any interest we likely would have traded him. Anyone with any interest would likely wait until he's a free agent if he makes it through waivers and get him for cheaper. We can still trade him after DFAing him. We'd owe him 1/6 of the contract if we outright release him You have any idea what happens if we throw him in AAA? Does he keep his same contract? Or does he get some sort of minor league split? He gets all $1.1 million.
  6. I don't know the numbers, but from what I've heard it's much higher than expected and possibly a major league deal. Could drive up the price of Cespedes and Soler. Could this be a swallowed the cat to catch the dog situation in which it may have pushed Cespedes and/or Solers prices high enough that it could turn off most teams other than those with available money to burn, such as the Cubs? Over flexing our financial muscles so to speak? What a terrible expression - it implies that folks would rather have the dog. I'm only sort of kidding.
  7. Rojas says it's a big league deal, which has a number of implications. For one, the Cubs have to clear out a 40-man spot. For another, the Cubs now have three years (possibly four, if he spends his first year in A-ball) to get him to the big leagues, lest he be subjected to waivers. I'm tickled freaking pink about the signing, but the 40-man part kind of takes some of the shine off.
  8. Grabow's extension was a killer each time he entered the game. \:D/
  9. What about that guy who was going to be in the draft, and then wasn't, and then who knows what? Onelkis Garcia Speck. Anyone know?
  10. Yeah. Not really sure Rosenthal's tweet means much of anything given that Bowden earlier said Cespedes is planning on meeting with many teams. The Marlins would, of course, be one of them.
  11. For the right price and no NTC it might make sense. Trading Garza for multiple prospects that are 1-3 years away from the ML while plugging Jackson into the rotation and possibly flipping him or Dempster at the deadline makes sense for a rebuilding team. Obviously, the right price is the key. That strikes me as perfectly reasonable. If Jackson would come cheaply enough, then this is the equation: Jackson + prospects + money >>>>> Garza (as you said, it would be all about the price, and I don't think he'd come cheaply enough on a two/three year deal to really go for this plan)
  12. Seems like going after guys like Qualls and Coffey is as much about crossing their fingers that they can deal them midseason as it is about, like, using them in the pen.
  13. So, have folks given up hope for Jin-Young Kim (used to be spelled Jin-Yeong Kim, but whateves)? Didn't get much time last year, turns 20 in April, didn't really leave a strong impression on anyone, apparently, and didn't put up great numbers in Boise. Obviously there was a lot of hope there after his big bonus.
  14. Even if not Torreyes, the Cubs have a ton of possible long-term 2B options - Hernandez, Amaya, DeVoss, Watkins, Silva, etc. Problem is, most are very, very young. Gotta bridge that gap somehow, and although Barney is fine for years like 2012 when I don't expect much, he's not fine with me as the starter in 2013 and 2014, when the Cubs *might* have a chance of being competitive.
  15. Even if you think Porcello is/can be as good as Turner, their financial situations are sufficiently different that Turner's value blows Porcello's away.
  16. All things equal, I'm sure they'd prefer Pena. But Pena at $8 million for 2012, or Soriano for $8 million total for 2012, 2013, and 2014? I'm genuinely not sure. What happens to Soriano when Martinez comes back next year? they ship him off for someone else who needs a DH for $2.7M/year..particularly if he has a decent year Which, I know, is easier said than done, but it's not implausible - I think if Soriano were a full-time DH, he could see a pretty nice bounce in his numbers (which were already almost league average for a DH last year).
  17. All things equal, I'm sure they'd prefer Pena. But Pena at $8 million for 2012, or Soriano for $8 million total for 2012, 2013, and 2014? I'm genuinely not sure.
  18. Victor Martinez has a torn ACL and will likely miss all of 2012. Think the Cubs are trying to call the Tigers almost immediately?
  19. According to Wikipedia, his birthday is October 10th, 1985. So, he's 26. Doesn't the fact that a local paper could make a mistake like that make you just a tiny bit nervous? I'm not saying I affirmatively doubt his age. But, well, I don't like to see a publication "mistakenly" up his age a year. It just unsettles me, ever so slightly. That said, I trust that Theo, Jed, et al, will not sign a guy that they have legitimate concerns about. I trust that they'll do their homework very thoroughly.
  20. Wittenmyer says deals are close with some of the other six remaining arb eligibles, too.
  21. I'm glad prices are reaching the point that teams feel uncomfortable. That's a hell of a good way of putting it.
  22. Obviously teams' systems vary greatly, but that sounds about right, even for teams with excellent systems.
  23. You are really short selling the Nationals right now. 1B Fielder 2B Rendon 3B Zimmerman SS Espinosa C Ramos LF Morse CF Werth RF Harper? Strasburg Zimmermann Gonzalez Wang? Detwiler? Lannan? Bullpens always fluctuate, but I am sure they can get by. That is a really, really solid lineup. The front 3 of the rotation is border line disgusting. I would be thrilled if that was a Cubs squad. Yeah, but ... but ... the outfield defense is bad.
  24. Can't wait for Day Three at 9am.
  25. Two sources (independently and prior to that guy tweeting) told me the Cubs were pushing teams to start putting together their best offers as of Wednesday night, but there was no timeline attached. In other words, there wasn't a whole lot of "meat" there. And, "put together your best offer" can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people.
