  1. Back on track after stumbling against the Nationals.
  2. Looks like the Cubs are getting back on track in the race for a high draft pick.
  3. I think a trade is fair if it makes sense for both teams given the teams' relative strengths and weaknesses even if it appears unfair on the face. For example, if Team 1 were to trade Adrian Peterson to Team 2 for Kyle Orton it would certainly appear to be unfair at first glance. However, if Team 1 also somehow has Chris Johnson, but its best quarterback is Matt Moore, then the trade might make sense for both teams despite appearing lopsided.
  4. Nah, he should man up and pitch through it. TJS is for wimps.
  5. I interpreted those comments as meaning that the Cubs wouldn't hire a manager just because he has a big name. I don't think they'd refuse to hire a qualified manager who just happens to have a big name, though. I wouldn't rule out Girardi.
  6. Tiger is tied for the lead at -6 after the first round of the Barclays tournament.
  7. I'm too lazy to try to figure it out, but I wonder if Castro would be the first player to win a batting title after starting the year in the minors.
  8. I'm not too concerned, yet. It was the Nationals. If we start beating REAL major league teams then it may be time to start worrying. This weekend in Cincinnati may be a key to our chances.
  9. Jim Essian won the first 5 games he ever managed, too. I think. I at least know they rattled off 5 in a row shortly after his hire. And Bruce Kimm won 7 of his first 10 games, including 4 in a row, in 2002.
  10. Nah, it will be former Cub Miguel Cairo in a pinch-hitting role. It will be off of Marmol, right after he strikes out the first two batters but then walks the bases loaded on 12 pitches.
  11. Possible good news for the rest of the league this year: You might have a chance. The rating site that was mentioned in one of the "Rate My Team" threads says that I have a 65% chance of making the playoffs with great in-season management, 50% with good, and 28% with average.
  12. This was mentioned in one of the "Rate My Team" threads, but I think it might interest enough people to warrant its own thread as a sticky. http://subscribers.footballguys.com/rate-my-team/form.php
  13. My star receivers: Steve Smith and Steve Smith. :D I'm participating in the live draft, but for some reason I'm not able to post in the chat (I think that might be because I'm using a netbook with a small screen.)
  14. On Roadkill itself, under Rules.
  15. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore;_ylt=AuuOJiXh0so.TMydiIZq7d64u7YF?gid=300417124 Cards pitched Felipe Lopez and Joe Mather (who took the loss) and played Kyle Lohse in left field. The Mets somehow managed to avoid such positional tomfoolery, though reliever Raul Valdes had a hit in two at-bats in the 18th and 19th innings. Yeah, what I was thinking about for the Mets was a starting pitcher (Pelfrey) serving as closer and getting the save. It's interesting that a Cardinal (Mather) entered the game as a pinch hitter and still had 6 at-bats.
  16. Reminds me of the Cards-Mets game earlier this year. I know the Cards used at least one pitcher in the field (as well as a position player on the mound), and the Mets might have as well.
  17. 2007: 125 games, 519 PA 2008: 137 games, 602 PA 2009: 116 games, 459 PA 2010: 114 games, 329 PA I stand corrected. I thought he had a major injury like an elbow or shoulder problem? Maybe he just played through it. Also wasn't he supposed to play first in this series? Or did Quade nix that idea? He had TJS during the off-season before 2009, but I don't think he really missed any time. He just played DH for a while if I recall. Position players don't take as long as pitchers to return. And yes, Quade did nix the 1B idea (at least for now).
  18. Strictly speaking there's a 7th, Rene Lacheman (who served as interim manager for one day after Baylor was fired but before Kimm arrived). Yeah, but Zambrano didn't pitch that day !! You're being as picky as I am. :D
  19. Strictly speaking there's a 7th, Rene Lacheman (who served as interim manager for one day after Baylor was fired but before Kimm arrived).
  20. And we traded him for two and a half years of Bobby Mercer (decent, but past his prime outfielder) and four years of Steve Ontiveros (bad third baseman, spent 6 years in Japan after leaving the Cubs at age 28). Madlock spent another decade in the league and put up Mark Grace-ish numbers. That was the cheapness that was Phil Wrigley. Madlock had the nerve to ask to be paid what he was worth, so bye-bye. Same thing with Bruce Sutter a few years later.
  21. That did happen once (Keith Hernandez and Willie Stargell in 1979).
  22. Much of the discussion in this thread is precisely why Phil Wrigley was never willing to hire Ernie Banks as manager. He knew that if he hired Ernie he'd also need to be willing to fire him if necessary, and he knew he couldn't bring himself to do that.
  23. Sounds like it may only be the first half of the season, but still a significant blow to the Vikings (especially with Harvin's migraines to deal with as well).
  24. I wonder if Favre is second-guessing his decision to return.
  25. You're thinking of Dana Kirk.
