  1. The offseason from hell gets EVEN WORSE. Hendry has got to go. Good God. You want Hendry fired because he signed a guy to play SS in the minor leagues? It's just the latest in a long line of goofball moves, many of which result in crappy players calling Wrigley Field home. Why can't we restrict Spring Training invites to people with talent? But signing Augie to a minor league contract ISN'T a goofball move. It would be if he were likely to make the Cubs' roster, but I think it's safe to say he was signed to provide depth at Iowa. Nothing wrong with that; most teams have some veteran filler at AAA. There are legitimate reasons for questioning Hendry, but I don't think signing Augie is one of them.
  2. I can't believe I actually beat Nathan to posting news about the Chiefs. :D
  3. I haven't read about this anywhere on the board (it may have been posted over Christmas time and I missed it), but according to the January issue of Vine Line Jody Davis is the new manager of the Chiefs. He replaces Julio Garcia, who is now the Cubs' Latin America field coordinator.
  4. Tim had to disable it because that was the cause of the frequent board crashes. The search database had simply grown too large for the board software to handle. Disabling the search function is a temporary fix. Once a permanent fix is implemented (such as archiving old threads) he plans to enable the search function again.
  5. If I remember correctly, he also missed a lot of time in Spring Training due to illness (flu, I believe) and needed some time to regain his strength.
  6. My own picks: NFC Wild Card round: #5 Panthers at #4 Giants #6 Redskins at #3 Buccaneers AFC Wild Card round: #5 Jaguars at #4 Patriots #6 Steelers at #3 Bengals NFC Divisional round: Buccaneers at #2 Bears Panthers at #1 Seahawks AFC Divisional round: Patriots at #2 Broncos Steelers at #1 Colts NFC Championship: Bears at Seahawks AFC Championship: Broncos at Colts Super Bowl: Seahawks vs. Colts at Detroit
  7. Here are the brackets. 8. Yahoo doesn't have a pick'em contest for the NFL playoffs, so I thought it would be fun to do one here (no prizes, just bragging rights at stake). In a follow-up post I'll post the playoff bracket, using question marks for teams not yer known. You should paste the bracket into your post, replace the question marks with the teams you think will fill those spots, and bold your picks. Keep in mind that following the first round the lower seeded Wild Card round winner plays at the #1 seed and the higher seeded Wild Card round winner plays at the #2 seed. The deadline for entering is Saturday, Jan. 7 at 4:00 P.M. Eastern time (one half hour before the first game), at which time I'll lock this thread to prevent late entries or changes. I'll update standings after each round. To make it easier to follow, please use this thread for entries only. Playoff discussions normally take place in Social.
  9. Bingo. We keep talking about "Dusty-proofing" the team, when the ideal way to Dusty-proof the team is to send him packing. There's something wrong when the main issue of concern about acquiring a player is whether the manager will use the player properly. If the current manager won't, find one that will. [/wishful thinking]
  10. What do you mean? You're obviously able to post, since you posted this message.
  11. [Dave Barry logic]His parents suspected he'd need the surgery, so they named him after it. [/Dave Barry logic]
  12. Some members simply choose not to provide that information. It is possible to indicate location, gender, etc. in your profile, but it's optional.
  13. After my vote the talley at the time was 4 yes, 13 no. So at least four fans of other teams have voted. :D
  14. Just bumping this to show that I'm on record as recognizing that Jones isn't a good player well before the Cubs even started talking to him. :D
  15. Yes it was; I found and posted his 2001 statistics in the thread about him.
  16. You should just ask Santa for a board that doesn't go down. :D
  17. Remember, you heard it here first. :D
  18. We have a winner.
  19. Foster should see just about all the playing time for Carolina for the rest of the year. Stephen Davis was placed on IR today.
  20. my god, shut up. Do not ever tell another poster to shut up. You're certainly welcome to disagree with somebody, but you are not welcome to tell them to shut up.
  21. In 1973 Allan Lewis (Washington's predecessor as Oakland's pinch running specialist) played in 35 regular season and 5 postseason games with zero at bats (although he did have 29 at bats in 156 games over his entire career).
  22. If a Card fan would do it, it's obviously a bad trade for the Cubs. :D
  23. I think the opinions on this board differ from SI because a large proportion of this board consists of Bears and some Packers fans. I voted for Bears vs. Packers even though its probably biased since I'm a Bears fan. I think Bears vs. Packers is a natural rivalry, whereas Cowboys vs. Redskins is artificially created when Dallas was inexplicably deemed to be in the east. I don't think Cowboys vs. Redskins would have been nearly as much of a rivalry if they weren't in the same division.
