  1. Or a catcher, since they throw out base stealers. :D
  2. Since it's a documentary I'd expect it to use old footage and not actors.
  3. His Hall of Fame credentials are based on how good he ONCE was; his lack of a job for 2006 is based on how good he NOW is. Just because a player can't find a job now doesn't mean he isn't a Hall of Famer. Ricky Henderson spent a few years in an independent league because he wasn't good enough to get a major league job anymore, but he's still likely to be a Hall of Famer.
  4. :x Ouch. Good. I'm sick of her wasting our time with that desperate quest for a gold. The Peyton Manning of women's figure skating, to be sure. That's an awful thing to say. Agreed, with respect to both Kwan and Manning.
  5. That makes as much sense as when the NFL thought that Dallas was east (which they still do) and Atlanta was west (at least they finally got that one right when they moved Atlanta to the south). Maybe the people who set up the divisions in MLB and the NFL learned geography from the same teacher. :D
  6. Maybe we'll get some new posters: "Russ's Evil Twin" and "Grant's Evil Twin."
  7. Since the Veterans Committee was restructured they have had two elections (2003 and 2005) without electing anybody either time. As a result Ron Santo and other players arguably deserving election who somehow slipped through the cracks when eligible for election by the writers aren't getting in. Has there been any discussion of restructuring again, in terms of the makeup of the Committee and/or going back to annual voting?
  8. I saw that last night; I don't recall whether it was Dick Buttons or the other male announcer (I forget who it was) who made those comments. The female analyst was Sandra Bezik (sp?).
  9. He pitched in three games for the Cubs in 1991 (his first major league action) and was released after the season. He didn't return to the majors until 1994 (with Florida) and had a journeyman career where he spent at least some time in the majors every year through 2002 (except for 2001). He was 14-15 with 2 saves and a 4.44 ERA for his career (entirely as a relief pitcher; no career starts).
  10. I think Berryhill hurt his shoulder that year. He was the starter to begin the season (with rookie Girardi as backup). He missed the entire postseason, then played in only 17 games in 1990 (probably still recovering from the injury most of the year), hitting .189. He played in 62 games for the Cubs in 1991 (showing consistency by hitting .189 again) before being traded to Atlanta along with Mike Bielicki for Turk Wendell and Yorkis Perez.
  11. Weeks must be very fast, if he can cover enough ground to play both second and short. :D
  12. Kyle Farnsworth's buddy was never a Cub. There was a Steve Wilson on the team, as well as Paul Kilgus and Paul Assenmacher. All of them were pitchers.

Final results: 6-5: Mark_R, circlechange, NCCubbieFan 5-6: Rocket Sauce, rawaction, Mizzou, Treebeard, DJAXXFAN, Fred Hornkohl, sethuel1 4-7: sweetpeteman, Cubbies75 3-8: Transmogrified Tiger, Is_Pedro_There, Mark Prior's Calves 0-11: IMB! Since there was no tie-breaker based on points, the three of us tied had the same number of correct picks every round, and none of us correctly picked the Super Bowl winner, the contest is declared a three-way tie. We'll have to split the $0 prize three ways. :D
  14. Hopefully my emphasis on starting pitching will work better than the Cubs' has. :D
  15. Probably true, but last year leagues couldn't even be formed until then. This year at least you can form leagues before then.
  16. No, and I don't think it matters what Blanco does either.
  17. Probably Feb. 16. According to mlb.com, that is Fantasy Baseball Opening Day this year (the first day that any fantasy baseball games can begin).Correction: Yahoo has already started fantasy baseball sign-up.
  18. I heard she's oiling the window hinges to make sure the window will open easily. :D
  19. I drafted Rolen in the first round of my regular Yahoo league last year. That's a large part of why I finished 15th in a 16 team league (counting on Vidro was another reason).
  20. Yes, and before Wichita it was in Tacoma (that's where it was when I started following baseball in 1969).
  21. You're very close if not quite word for word. I specifically remember the "God willing" part. I definitely detected at the time some uncertainty in his own mind.
  22. Seeing a player I watched near the end of his career turn 75 makes me feel old. :(
  23. Probably Feb. 16. According to mlb.com, that is Fantasy Baseball Opening Day this year (the first day that any fantasy baseball games can begin).
