Wow, unbelievable. Not even in the same solar system as the truth. Yes, the start is very disappointing, but the offense has been scoring runs lately, the starting pitching has been very good for the most part, and the bullpen as a whole hasn't been that bad (Eyre has been horrendous, Howry has been OK, Wuertz and Cotts are still unscored on, Dempster has been great except for one game). The division is weak; there's still plenty of time to put it together. Reason for concern? Yes. Time to mail in the season? Not even remotely close.

He got injured; I don't recall if it was his shoulder or elbow. He pitched some more in the minors after 1990 but never made it back to the majors. -
I do remember reading about Smyth. I don't recall when that was. Wasn't Hoffpauir caught a year or two ago when he was with West Tenn? I don't recall reading anything about that. You may be thinking of Craig; he was.

It will be hard for Miller to get hammered on the DL. :D What you really need to hope for is not to see Eyre.

I think Eyre is the worst hands down. Cotts has been great so far, but I don't expect it to last. I don't think Cherry should be judged on one game. It was his major league debut, which can make anyone nervous, and I thought he looked good except for the home run. It's not his fault he was thrown into the fire without getting his feet wet first.

It would be more challenging to base this on the 40-man roster rather than 25. -
It's not fair to blame Cherry for tonight's loss. It was his major league debut; anybody would be nervous in that situation. Tonight's loss belongs to Eyre and, more so, the umpire that stole the game by calling Lee out when he was so obviously safe that even the Brewers' announcers said it was a terrible call. Cherry gets a pass on this one.

Um, where have you been today? Cherry is already up. He was called up today with Miller going on the DL. Eyre does have to go, however, and immediately. He must not be allowed to pitch again with the Cubs leading or in striking distance; using him is effectively forfeiting the game.

That might be the core of a deal, but I would think it would take some tweaking since Zambrano (although a possible free agent)>Santana and Murton (so far in the majors)>Wood. I was under the impression that Wood will be the far superior player, if not this year than in the future. You're right. But we already have a SS. A Gold Glove SS at that. One that drives in runs with his glove.

Yes they could. They could start him on the 1st and send him back down the 2nd; he'd then be eligible to come back up on the 12th.

As long as the pitcher called up is a reliever, however, it has the same effect. The Cubs don't need a fifth starter for awhile, so the immediate need is for 7 relievers as opposed to 12 total pitchers. By the time the 5th starter is needed Guzman will be eligible to be called back up.

I think Walrond is a AAAA pitcher that is able to put up some good AAA numbers; I don't even think he's on the 40-man roster. I think Marmol or Guzman (if he rebounds from his Saturday outing) are the most likely candidates to replace Miller next time a fifth starter is needed. -

He wouldn't be good at that either. I don't think he would be either, but he could be the sacrificial innings eater for blowout games.

He'd have no choice but to come out of the pen if that's what the Cubs tell him to do as long as he wants to continue his baseball career and getting paid.

A contending team would likely be willing to pay a lot if they think he can put them over the top. Think Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz or Larry Andersen for Jeff Bagwell.

I think this is only about the third 300+ point week I've had since I've been in the league (I should still be over 300 after deductions, since I only had relievers going today). I'm also positive this is my biggest margin of victory ever (over 120 points at the moment).

And if Marquis continues to be at least decent (I don't expect him to keep up with what he's done so far).

Rich Hill might beg to differ. Wuertz has been great, though (as has Cotts, surprisingly).

If the Cubs aren't going to re-sign him then they MUST trade him and get a good return. Losing him for nothing is not an option.

Perfect. Pittsburgh can develop him just in time to trade him to us to replace Ramirez when he retires. :D -
130+ point lead going into Sunday (largest lead in the league). Barring a perfect game by Steve Trachsel I should be safe. :D
