  1. 40% chance of rain means 60% chance of no rain. The odds are in your favor.
  2. Baseball players are such wimps. WhyTH can't they play in the rain?! I scheduled my entire vacation and spent my meager hard-earned, and I came to Chicago hoping to make my son's day by going to this one game, and a little rain postpones the game and ruins my chance to see them this year. You'd think with the millions these idiots are getting paid, they could handle a little rain. Freagin pansies. Better?? Now it's a rant. :D I'd put it in Baseball Discussions, since that's where people normally talk about ticket-related issues. You might be able to justify putting it in Social as well.
  3. How is this a rant?
  4. To me the only other logical moves would be a trade or (hopefully not) Wood back to the DL.
  5. I think that's unlikely. If Soriano doesn't return until Sept. 1 or later rosters will have expanded and there would be no need to send anybody down.
  6. Former Yankee shortstop and broadcaster Phil Rizzuto died at 89 early this morning according to Yahoo Sports. No cause of death has been announced yet.
  7. If Blanco is already on the 60-day DL, the 40-man roster stands at 39. No move would be required. Yep; I worded it wrong. However, that doesn't seem likely to me. If he were already on the 60-day DL and the 40-man roster was only at 39 there would have been no need to deroster Dopirak when Patterson was called up.
  8. It will be interesting to see what the corresponding 40-man roster move is. A lot depends on who's right (Bruce Miles or cubs.com) concerning whether Blanco is already on the 60-day DL. If cubs.com is right and he's only on the 15-day then it would make sense to transfer him to the 60-day to create a 40-man roster spot. If he's already on the 60-day someone would need to be DFA'd.
  9. Still one opening remaining.
  10. Yes they do. Floyd going on the bereavement list was offset by Ward coming off the DL, so the roster is at the full 25 even without Floyd. They'd need to make a move now if Fox and/or Pigs really do come up, and they'd need to make another move when Floyd comes off the bereavement list.
  11. Interesting; the Mets are more likely to win the NL pennant, but the Cubs are more likely to win the World Series.
  12. There is no Wild Card in the Southern League unless the same team wins both halves of the season. Currently that is the case in the Southern League North Division (Tennessee's division), but in that event I don't recall whether the second position goes to the team with the better overall record for the entire season or for the second half. If it's based on the second half Chattanooga leads the Smokies by 1 game; if it's based on the entire season the Smokies lead Chattanooga by 7 games.
  13. I'm wondering if this one time Bruce was mistaken; it just doesn't make sense otherwise. Not only is he listed on the roster as being on the 15-day DL (as you point out), but none of the transactions show him being transferred to the 60-day DL, while the transactions do show other players being transferred. Plus, if he is on the 60-day DL the 40-man roster would only be at 39, which in turn would mean it was unnecessary to deroster Dopirak and take the slight risk of someone else claiming him on waivers. To me all of this suggests the rare case of Bruce being off (perhaps he was thinking of Guzman rather than Blanco; Guzman was transferred around that time).
  14. Back then I believe there were actually two trading deadlines. After the first deadline a team had to get waivers in its own league to trade a player, and after the second deadline it required clearing waivers in both leagues. I'm not positive about that, but it sticks in my mind.
  15. All class. Oh get off your high horse. I made no comment about his dad other than hoping he'd get better. I'm not going to question the intent of your post (only you know that), but it came out very bad. It was very obvious that he wasn't going to get better; in fact, he was undoubtedly already dead when you made your post (Laura's post mentioning the announcement of his death came less than 10 minutes after your post, and it certainly takes more than 10 minutes before a death is announced publicly). Your post came off as a potshot at Cliff during a time of personal tragedy. It's certainly valid to complain about his loss of power, but this thread isn't the proper place for that.
  16. I do that frequently too. Sometimes that results in a quote being attributed to the wrong poster; unless one is careful it is easy to delete a level of quote without deleting the name of the poster.
  17. Is Witters what you get when you combine the best characteristics of Wieters and Vitters into a single person?
  18. OK, Tim has already requested TWICE in this thread that the insults stop, yet they continue. Consider this a final warning; any more insults and the thread will be locked, as well as any possible action Modzilla may consider appropriate for ignoring Tim's requests.
  19. I need a win bad. Two games out of the last playoff spot in the East with four weeks remaining.
  20. Damn; I outscore the top two teams in the East, but I'm up against the suddenly hot Bayou Bashers (who just miss scoring 400 points) and lose by way over 100 points.
  21. Holy pitcher abuse, Batman!
  22. The full trade was Salazar and Wynne for Schiraldi, Darrin Jackson, and a PTBNL (which turned out to be 1B Earl Stephenson). The trade was made on Aug. 30, just barely in time for Salazar and Wynne to be playoff-eligible.
  23. This could change as more people vote, but at the moment the preference seems to be for straight picks in the NFL contest and point spreads for the college contest.
  24. He needs the chance to do that in the majors, though. He can't do that at AAA. It takes patience with young players. Even after they've done all that they can in the minors they still usually go through some growing pains early in their major league careers, some more than others. Mike Schmidt hit less than .200 in his rookie year, and he turned out OK. You can't expect immediate stardom.
