  1. Well, he only put up a 6+ ERA once. He's no Cy YOung, but I dont think he is that bad either. Also, he's thrown at least 190 innings the last three years. That alone makes him a better bet to count on than Prior.
  2. He's played a little bit Yeah I know. That is why I said earlier in the thread that it is crazy to expect this guy to stick with a major league club after playing only 15 minor league games the past 3 years.
  3. The Cubs weren't fooling around when they said they were not counting on Prior were they? Either they are still expecting him to miss a lot of time, or they are going to make him earn a spot. Right now I think the following 4 guys are locks for the rotation. Zambrano Lilly Hill Marquis The following will battle for that final spot: Miller Prior Guzman Marshall Obviously, Prior coming back would be everyone's choice. That remains to be seen though. Miller didn't look too bad coming back last year, maybe another offseason of recovery makes him a little stronger. Marshall or Guzman will have to be very good in ST to earn that spot. I don't think it is out of the question to see a trade involving one of those guys, considereing there really is no place for them right now.
  4. When will people realize Jones is just fine. Payton is going to get paid almost exactly what Jones will the next two years. I'd take Jones over Payton anyday.
  5. 50,000 Basically, that means the Cubs broke even. $50,000 was what they had to pay Tampa Bay, so they're just getting their money back from the Reds. Consistent with the idea that they were really drafting him for the Reds in the first place. I'm sure there's a gentlemen's agreement in place that, at some time in the future, the Reds would do something similar for the Cubs if the situations are reversed. Otherwise, it would make no sense for the Cubs to help out a division rival without getting anything in return. This is no big deal. If the Reds want him, there is no problem in the Cubs helping them out. It isn't like they gave Pujols to the Reds or anything. This kid has played 15 minor league games this year, and missed the previous three seasons completely. No way he sticks. He didn't miss the two previous seasons. He's been playing in the independent league. I don't know whether he sticks, but he's certianly has enough talent. No he didn't. This is from a USA Today artice on 6/7/2006
  6. I think Rothschild is a fine pitching coach. It isn't his fault that the injuries have occurred. For some reason it has been popular to bag on him around here. If Maddux thinks he's one of the best that is good enough for me.
  7. What do Maddux know? He was probably just saying those things to be nice. Why should we listen to him? I'm sure all the amateur evaluators will set him straight and tell him how worthless Larry is. :P
  8. I'll give 3:1 odds BBB is correct He just stole my prediction from earlier in the tread.

  10. He has a histroy of participating in thing slike that. He used to be in a Ballet, the Nutcracker I think, that raised money for charity and his animal foundation. Good for him.
  11. Okay then, so why would a guy, Depodesta for example, be a better choice? Do you think Depodesta recognizes the need for a balance of two worlds? Wasn't he instrumental in cutting a lot of Oakland's scouts? Seems to me that he may not recognize that balance either. I am in total agreement with you though. You need to look at both, and then try and make the best decision. What makes him such a great option? How was he hosed? He came in in 2004 and the team made the playoffs, and I beleive were swept by St. Louis. He then had a whole winter to engineer the team he wanted and they went on to finish with 2nd worst record for the LA franchise since they moved out there in 1958. Coletti came in last year and the team made the playoffs, they were then swept out by the Mets, sound familiar? We'll have to see how they do this year. He wasn't a great GM in LA, why are so many convinced he would be elsewhere?
  12. Maybe I'm nuts, but I wouldn't mind Marquis. If he can be signed reasonably. Marquis was god-awful last year, there is no getting around that. He is not worth 9 million a year. Having said that, I think if he could put up something similar to his 2004 and 2005 numbers, he would be a decent addition to the back end of the rotation. 2004 15-7 201.1 IP 3.71 ERA 2005 13-14 207.0 IP 4.13 ERA He falls in line with what the Cubs are looking for, durability. He has thrown at least 190 innings the last three years. If, and only if, he can be signed to a reasonable contract, I don't think it is THAT bad of a move. I'd rather have him, with a decent contract, then 5/55 for Meche.
  13. I doubt the Cubs would get involved. They have been pretty public about DeRosa wanting to come here so he would be the guy at 2B. If Giles is non-tendered, he might end up out in SD with his brother.

  16. Excellent post. Often times people are so quick to judge another based on an article or a couple of quotes. After that, no matter what anybody says, their minds are already made up. I think Hughes is a very important resource for the Cubs organization, and I hope he continues to be so.
  17. DePodesta? The man that brought LA its second worst season since moving the franchise there in 1958? I understand why people are intrigued by him, but he didn't exactly perform all that well in LA. To say there are no other options is pretty shortsighted. He also brought the Dodgers to the playoffs in a season when no one thought they had a chance. Two years doesn't seem like the best way to judge a GM. I'm not against him per se, yet I think he gets too much hype without much to back it up with. I'm sure there are other good options out there besides Depo.
  18. I know, it was a joke.
  19. Hendry loses another....

  21. and everyone knows that its impossible to repeat a good performance right... *sigh* Only if their name is Jacque Jones, at least according to most around here.
  22. You are all missing the point. Marquis is the LH bat the Cubs have been looking for. The Cubs would have the two best hitting pitchers on the team. He is beings sought after for his stick, not his arm! :)
  23. Maybe 5 years ago. The kid has never ben above A ball, and has sat out two or three full seasons. There is no way he is in any position to be the Cubs CF for a long time. That said, there is no harm in picking him, but I don't think it is anything to get excited about. Read the follow-up discussion, if you haven't yet. As it turns out the Cubs drafted him in order to then spin him off to Cincinnati (apparently Cincinnati was afraid somebody else would draft him before it was their turn). REAL Sports on HBO had a real nice piece on Hamilton. According to the piece he's completely turned his life around thanks to his wife's father. He's been sober for over two years. IMO, this is a great pick up Are you saying it is a great pickup if they can work out a deal to keep him in the organization? I just don't see it as "great" if they expect this guy to somehow stick on a major league roster after playing only 15 games this past year. And those 15 games were the first games he had played since 2002! There is no way...
  24. Don't be surprised. They are talking about him as the # 7 hitter.
