  1. Yes, yes he was. He also was a dick about the cork incident with Sammy. Grace is the epitomy of the know nothing, ex-jock broadcaster/color guy. And to make matters worse, he isn't even funny. Sammy was asking for it though. I agree with some of your points there, but Sosa embarassed himself more by doing it, than grade did by poking fun at it.
  2. I agree with most of that except going up there and taking 7-8 pitches late in the game. I think it's more valuable when your wearing out the starting pitcher then a reliever. Mainly because there's 5-6 left in the bullpen. I think it depends on the situation too. If Hill is up and a man is on second and two outs plus the pitchers spot is up next, I want him to drive the ball no matter what the amount of pitches are. Exactly. A walk doesn't do you much good in that situation.
  3. Why? Have you ever done it? I think it is careless to dismiss it as a minor issue. The role of the catcher is very important to the whole process of pitching. They serve a larger purpose than just somebody to catch the ball. Rothschild does not call the pitches. Pre-game meetings and gameplans are important, but the P and C are pretty much on their own once the game begins. I never said to dismiss it, but it's way over emphasized. I think it's even more careless to insinuate that the P and C are on an island during the game, especially if the tandem isn't having success. How is it overemphasized? What is it less important than? What is it more important than? Of course the pitchers aren't on an island out there. That wasn't my point. The pitching coach's primary job is to prepare them, either mechanically or through scouting reports leading up to their start or appearance. Yes, there is communication involved during a game as well. But they do not call each and every pitch thrown, especially Rothschild. That is the job of the P and C, after the several informational meetings and scouting reports they have gone over with the pitching coach.

  5. http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4155/is_20060416/ai_n16165873 for some reason, i think that rothschild calls the game for certain pitchers. No he doesn't. He'd be more likely to call a game with a rookie or unexperienced catcher, not a certain pitcher. Catchers call the game at the major league level. Doesn't mean the pitching coach doesn't have influence or make a call now and then, but the overwhelming majoirty of the game/pitches is the catchers responsibility.
  6. Nope. Worse, actually. If you say so. I will give you the fact he was bad with the bat, but his defensive abilities and the way he called a game is one of the reason the cubs made the playoffs that year. I dont consider him to be that bad of a player. Rothschild calls the game. This isn't little league or even high school. Major League catcher call 90% of the game. The pitching coach may take over in a few situations, but for the most part it is the responsibility of the Catcher. Unless something has changed since 2005 that is. Because I know for a fact Rothschild was not calling games in 2005, or any season before then since he has been there.
  7. I really thought Penn St. would be decent this year. Not a tourney team, but respectable. What happened?
  8. Hahaha... This thread is great!
  9. Just another reason to hate the crybaby cheater. I get the cheater refrence...but why is he a crybaby? When I was watching the Iowa vs. IU game last week he seemed to be whining excessively to the ref's. I know many coaches cry to the ref's, it just seemed excessive to me. Hence my new name for him the crybaby cheater. Ok, just curious. Nobody in the Big 10 matches Weber when it comes to whining on the sideline though.
  10. Its just a freakin number, who cares? Sosa, at least currently, is still playing. Teams don't usually retire numbers until a player has officially retired anyway. I don't see the big deal.

  12. Does Illinois find a way into the tournament? Just glanced at their schedule. Looks like they should win the rest of their games except for the season ender at Iowa. Would be hard to win at Iowa on what I am sure is a Senior night. What do you guys think? Might come down to Iowa Or Illinois, depending on what goes down in the Big 10 tournament.
  13. Why is DJ a punk?
  14. Round two tomorrow.... Illinois at IU. Can't wait! IU has had a whole week off to rest and prepare.
  15. I'm totally digging the grey one. I wish I knew if it would fit or not. Long Live the CUBA Jerseys!!!!
  16. Where is unfounded optimism? I've yet to see anyone comment that Hill had a shot to be anything but a 24th or 25th man. Hill has a career (.343)OBP 45 pts higher than Neifi (.298) and over 50 pts higher than Tomas (.298). That is hardly anything to scoff at. As far as his glove is conerned, with Izturis and Derosa, I'm sure that he is not going to be coming in as a defensive replacement very often. His OBP and speed may be a nice addition to the bench. He can't hit. A good pinch hitter has to do more than just occasionally take a walk.
  17. He's actually the opposite of Neifi. Well, they both can't hit but I thought Hill was a pretty good OBP guy that could steal some bases. Not really. Hill has 6 career SB's, they all came with the Cubs. He hasn't had a SB since leaving Chicago. Also, his OBP is ok, but does it really matter if your OPS is below .700? He has had one year with an OPS above .700. That was with, you guessed it, the Cubs. It was .701. Again, he's Neifi without the defense.
  18. There would be nbo sense of optimism whatsoever about this if Hill had never been in the Cubs sytem to begin with. Everyone that is happy with this is just basing it on old feelings and unfounded optimism that he was once the future of the Cubs middle infield. He's Neifi without the good defense.
  19. Hill was just another in the long line of overhyped "prospects" the Cubs built up. That is why I am always skeptical with prospects, especially with this organization. The best thing Hendry ever did was turn overhyped prospect #1, Hill, into Ramirez. and... Overhyped prospects #2, Choi, for Lee.
  20. Guardado was with them last year, and had to have elbow surgery. They aren't expecting him to contribute probably until August, if even then. This is similar to the Dempster/Williamson deals that the Cubs out together the past few years.
  21. The Sausage Slammer, Randall Simon with a ground rule double to put Venezuela up 2-0 over Mexico.
  22. Two of Ronny's hits were infield singles to the hole in shortstop. He wasn't exactly stinging the ball.
  23. The games have been on several of the regional sports network channels. I am watching a game right now on 625, channel SNY. Most of these games are on a delayed basis, but still fun to watch. Rather watch this than 8 hours of Super Bowl pre-game.
  24. Just and FYI... Iowa Manager Buddy Bailey is managing Venezuela
