  1. Bruce says this isn't true. Then again, Gammons is on the 20 dollar bill so it's hard to believe he's not right. I'm perplexed here. I don't believe an offer was made. Remember, agents like to float a lot of things, especially to get the market going. Do you believe that they are interested enough to make an offer in the 3-4 year range at close to 15 per year? Have you heard anything about the Igawa bid? thanks Bruce. I don't believe the Cubs will go $15 mil per year for Schmidt. Don't get too excited worrying about Igawa. He'll land elsehwere. Are we going to be seeing Gil Meche and Jason Marquis next year? Because that wouldn't be cool. Just thnk of the intense battle for best hitting pitcher between Zambrano and Marquis!
  2. Leave Jones where he is, he will be fine. His salary is relatively cheap, based on the current market. Hopefully with a healthy Lee and Barrett, he shouldn't have to shoulder the load. He doesn't have to be a star, in the current lineup he can be a pretty good complementary player. Ramirez Lee Soriano Barrett Possibly Murton. I can live with JJ being the 5/6th best hitter on this team.
  3. If he can swindle 15 million per year out of the Red Sox, then good for him. If I were the GM though, I would still be a little hesitant about paying a guy 15 million per year, plus the 51 million positng fee, who has never played one major league game in the U.S. I feel sorry for Red Sox season ticket holders. I think the prices for seats will be going up.
  4. After the All-Star break, Hill was 6th in the NL in ERA, 7th in K/9, 10th in K/BB, 4th in WHIP, and 4th in OPS against. It was more than just a few good starts, Hill was a genuine ace in the second half. In the second half, a couple of months. I like him, a lot. I just don't want to rely on him to be your #2 starter after one half season of good starts. Maybe it was his abysmmal performances the last two years that are holding me back. I think he will have a good year, but I don't want to count on it as a certainty. Those numbers are what Randy Johnson did in his prime. I don't think Hill is quite there yet.
  5. I'm curious as to his win/loss total and his E.R.A. Ken Well, of course those things are more dependent on outside factors, especially win/loss.....but I'll guess 21-7, 3.00. I just thought with Bill James speculating, we could do a little speculating as well....... 21-7 235K  Amazing what a few good starts in a wasted season does for expectations. I'm all for Hill in the rotation, but counting on him as a #2, which I have seen several advocate, is a big mistake.
  6. My thoughts on JOnes, not sure how popular they will be. I say keep him. He is a huge bargain right now, based on the money that has been thrown around this offseason. I'll take him for 5 million. He has his faults, but as of now he is the only adequate LH bat the Cubs have. I' dont think you have to have a 50/50 split between LH and RH, but it does help to have some balance. A full year out of Lee, plus A-Ram and Soriano will be a huge upgrade over last year. Jones can be a very good complement for thosse guys if he puts up similar numbers to last year.
  7. Carrie Underwood was impressive... That is all
  8. I'm not a Jeter lover, but he had a great year. .343/.417/.483 39 doubles Only 10 games all season where he did not reach base.
  9. should have been Jeter's. bring on the inevitable "overrated" discussion. :D
  10. You can't hang the loss of Drew on Coletti, that wasn't his contract. Depodesta made that stupid contract, similar to A-Ram's He did sign Juan though....
  11. I'm more concerned with the quality of the curve than him hitting mid to upper 90's.
  12. i'm so glad that depodesta isn't in charge there anymore. The same Depodesta that gave Drew an out clause? The same thing Hendry was lambasted for with Ramirez?
  13. Floyd is not a full time player, his injury history shows that. I'd prefer to see Murton get the majority of the playing time, but having Floyd as a 4th outfielder to spell Murton and Jones wouldn't be a bad option. I'm assuming Soriano would play center if FLoyd was in for Jones.
  14. Yeah, for 65 games at Iowa in 2005. Last year was more in line with what he did in the minors.
  15. My brain hurts. I'm going to bed.
  16. When does that Ben Wallace deal start to look like a bad one?
  17. Probably is the key word there. You, nor I know what could have been done and how much money could have/have not been spent. It isn't our money, if the Trib wants to spend it then let them. Actually I am certain it could have been done. The Cubs got an EqA of roughly .208 from their SSs last season in 486 outs. Julio Lugo's career EqA is .265. The difference between those two over 486 outs is roughly 41 runs. The actual should be higher because for the most part Lugo's been a better hitter the last couple of seasons. The Cubs got an EqA of roughly .250 from their CFers last season in 526 outs. Alfonso Soriano's career EqA is .287. The difference between those two over 526 outs is roughly 30 runs. Julio Lugo could be had for what, 32 million max? Soriano was had for what, 100 million more. Soriano will be more productive than Lugo. Again, it isn't our money, if they are committed to upping the payroll they have to spend it somewhere. They will still get some pitching, you don't make a move like this and not improve your pitching. Let them spend.
  18. Probably is the key word there. You, nor I know what could have been done and how much money could have/have not been spent. It isn't our money, if the Trib wants to spend it then let them.
  19. I think exposing Dopirak would be fine. I know a lot of his struggles last year can be due to the injury, so he basically missed a year of development. I don't think anybody would take him and leave him on their roster all season, he's nowhere near ready for that.
  20. Aardsma was expendable, not that big of a loss in my opinion. Have to see what the next move is before this one can be totally judged. It is highly unlikely they will start 2007 with three Lefties in the pen (Eyre, Cotts, Ohman). Maybe Cotts will be tried out as a starter as some have speculated. one of the other guys could be traded, or Cotts. Let's see what happens next. I find it hard to bash Hendry on this move, because as of right now, it is an incomplete one.
  21. The minor league system needs some additional resources allocated. This is why I felt bidding 25-30 million on Matsuzaka could have been better spent in developing the farm system, Latin America and Pacific scouting, etc.
  22. I give Blanco credit for at least playing in a winter league and keping in shape. You really don't see a lot of major league players (non-rookies) do it. He could just as easily sit on his butt all winter. I know Tejada plays as well. I think a lot of the Dominican/Venezualen players take pride in playing in this leagues.
  23. And what else? Hill is probably a good starting point. Another example of over-valuing your own team's prospects. Every fan of a team does it.
  24. While the money may be a little high, it isn't like the Cubs are tapped out here. Wood resigned for significantly less. Pierre's salary is gone (most likely) Assuming the payroll is raised like they are saying, I don't think Blanco and DeRosa handicap them all that much. Granted it remains to be seen who else Hendry is going to bring in here. But I think it is safe to assume Blanco and DeRosa will be afterthoughts when reviewing the teams offseason acquisitions because better players will be brought in. That is my hope anyway.
  25. Can't wait for this one to blow up.... I don't mind Hank, very good receiver and can really shut down a running game. Basically what you want in a backup C. Any offense he gives you is a bonus, and he had his moments last year at the plate. Thanks for your time Soto.
