Should've gone with Brook Fordyce Parent and Joe McEwing were hired to the staff, and Ventura is considering Jeff Manto for his bench coach. This is just getting silly.
That seems plausible. It seems like the franchise is just about ready to give up on Guthrie. Red Sox are desperate for pitching; just tried to pry Chris Capuano away from the Mets. They'd probably insist we take Lackey from them, though.
I was gonna bring up Hoffman's 1999 or some of Mariano's best years. Or heck even the insane numbers Kimbrel has posted this year. But damn, I don't think anything tops that.
Really sad. My condolences go out to the families of those on board. Vasyunov showed potential for the Devils last season. We wanted to keep him, but he wanted to get more playing time in Russia the next couple years before returning to the Devils.
I really, really, really don't want LaMar. I don't even care if we don't get a big name and go with Oppenheimer or Hahn. I just think hiring LaMar would be as bad as keeping Hendry or hiring Colletti.
I don't know that he's worth $14 mil anymore, but he's been pretty solid after a rough start. I definitely wouldn't mind him back next season, especially since Z is likely done and we don't know what we're getting out of Wells/Cashner.
HOLY ISH I haven't checked here in a couple hours in this is what I come back to. Was NOT expecting this, at least so soon. I hope we don't eff this up and hire someone terrible.
Tim Dierkes of MLBTR posted his thoughts on this, along with few somewhat feasible trade possibilities: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/08/unloading-carlos-zambrano.html
I'm thoroughly pleased with how this went. I thought there was a small chance we'd sign either Maples or Dunston; I didn't think we'd get both. That we got most of our big name picks signed is fantastic. I wonder how our prospect rankings will look now.
I read somewhere that he knew all the vendors and concession stand workers at his home stadiums by name and would chat with them. And supposedly when they were building Citizen's Bank Park in Philly, he showed up to the construction site one day and signed autographs for a few hours and chatted with the construction workers. Just an all-around nice guy.
