  1. Yeah, that was my exact argument. My friend tried to say Machado was more valuable because great third basemen are harder to come by than great outfielders. That is true, but Trout is probably the best player in baseball now as a 21 year old. I guess a more interesting question would be if you had to pick one young pitcher, who would it be?
  2. A friend posed a question on Facebook: "Who would you rather build a franchise around, Mike Trout or Manny Machado?" It was almost universally Trout, but I was curious to see what people here would say, or if you would pick someone else.
  3. At that point, I would rather let Arrieta/Hendricks/Grimm/Rusin/Cabrera/Villanueva battle it out. How many more offseasons are were going to go after a patchwork rotation? Letting those guys battle it out isn't going with a patchwork rotation? They all at least have a future in the organization and could probably perform similarly for a fraction of the cost. If Hughes were to sign cheaply, then I wouldn't be opposed. But I'd imagine we won't be the only team looking at him.

  5. Not really that prestigious, but MLB Trade Rumors named their Propsect All-Star Team. Vogelbach and Baez made it. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/09/prospect-rumor-roundup-all-prospect-team.html
  6. Chris Johnson currently leads the NL in batting average and only Miggy Cabrera has a higher average. I know it's batting average, but Chris Johnson? Really?
  7. Had my first game at Wrigley Thursday night. It was everything I had hoped it would be (including the loss  Sat in the bleachers, had some Old Style. Just a great time.
  8. Angels trade Callaspo to A's for Grant Green.
  9. They won't be regretting those in a few years when it comes time to lock up Trout.
  10. Astros got an intriguing prospect for Veras. I don't see why we can't get something similar.
  11. They're also close to getting Rios from the White Sox. That probably takes them out on Schierholtz. I feel like we may only be trading Gregg by the time the dust settles tomorrow evening.
  12. Am I the only one who didn't realize former Cubs 5th round pick Darin Downs has been pitching out of the Tigers' pen the last two seasons?
  13. Tino Martinez is the new Bobby Knight http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/eye-on-baseball/22923345/report-marlins-hitting-coach-tino-martinez-abused-player
  14. According to Baseball Reference, Cano has a WAR of 4.9 and Gardner as a WAR of 3.5. The rest of the Yankees' entire offense has combined for a 1.2 WAR.
  15. So Topps is catching up with sabermetrics http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2013-07-26/topps-baseball-cards-war-advanced-stats-brian-kenny-mlb-network?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter
  16. I hate that the glove throwing gif only exists in like 8 pixels by 8 pixels format. The play sucked but Lilly's reaction will always get a chuckle out of me.
  17. Sickels write up: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/7/26/4559534/cubs-trade-alfonso-soriano-to-yankees-for-pitching-prospect-corey-black He also had Black as the No. 12 prospect in the Yankees system before the season: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/7/23/4548684/new-york-yankees-top-20-2013-pre-season-prospects-in-review Sounds like he has good potential. Wish the Yankees has picked up more of the bill but it seems like a fair return. Could be a future closer or solid setup man, it sounds like.
  18. Vitters isn't going to sweeten anything, and Olt is far more valuable than anything the Yankees are likely to include in a Soriano trade (although I'd love to be wrong on that). At this stage, Valbuena would be more of a sweetener than Vitters, no? I'd love to shift Valbuena to second and call up Olt down the road. I would guess Barney wouldn't fetch much from teams seeking help at SS or 2B?
  19. Thoughts on packaging Gregg with Schierholtz there? What possible return could we get on that from the Pirates?
  20. Cliff Lee during the player introductions was classic: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-j8aosrf7ZmQ/UeXdfT3EK4I/AAAAAAAABZo/3jZ0TwmvccE/s500/leestare.gif
