  1. Posted it in Transactions but also appropriate here. So Whiteside and Baker compete for the backup catcher spot. Woof.
  2. Well that's a bummer. So our backup catcher will be a black hole in the lineup at least once a week.
  3. Some say he was traded and some say he was claimed. It would be nice to get something for him, though it likely doesn't matter much in the end.
  4. Sounds like they really like Barney and they could use the catching depth, too. This does come a day or two after Daniels basically said he has nightmares over the Garza trade, so I don't think we take him for a ride again. I'd rather have Kotteras as the backup C, obviously. John Baker had a nice start to his career but that was like 5 years ago and he's basically been Koyie Hill since. I'm curious what we reasonably could get from the Rangers in return for Barney/Kotteras.
  5. So now that trade is Fister for Ray, Krol and a 37 year old Alex Gonzalez.
  6. Yeah, they really wanted a power hitter and they spent a lot on a guy who hits home runs and does nothing else. He's basically Adam Dunn without plate patience. They may regret that.
  7. His defense rated highly at third last year, didn't it? I've been in favor of him starting at second since the end of last year. Give Olt a shot at third and we also have Bonifacio to back up everywhere. Barney really has no place on the team. I've heard someone say we wouldn't give him up for nothing and he provides good veteran leadership in the clubhouse, but he is a black hole in the lineup. I think that, and his rising salary, would outweigh his "leadership" and glove.
  8. So much for them scouting Barney. Dombrowski made it sound like this is their replacement SS.
  9. I was hoping until the last second that's not what it was. #-o
  10. And here it is, MLB's top 20 Cubs prospects: http://www.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2014/#list=chc Callis also adds a bonus five prospects here: http://jimcallis.mlblogs.com/2014/03/18/bonus-cubs-prospects-nos-21-25/
  11. I would not mind checking in on the price. Also it looks like the Phillies are trying to trade Jimmy Rollins before the season starts. The Tigers make sense as a trade partner there. I could also see the Yankees, because of course.
  12. Yeah there have been some underwhelming reports on him this spring, too. I think I read his velocity was down.
  13. They call us, we ask for Bradley, they hang up. That's been the story all offseason. There's no reason for us to loosen up our trade demands now. If we don't get what we want, then we extend him or deal him at the deadline.
  14. C Jake Fox 1B Brian Dopirak 2B Bobby Hill SS Lou Montanez 3B David Kelton OF Corey Patterson OF Felix Pie OF Nic Jackson Yeah, I don't think they all hit their ceilings. The original lineup posted is the dream but I bet the actual lineup looks nothing like that. One of the "core four" is going to be traded or make like one of the above guys I listed.
  15. Ervin Santana to the Braves, one year and $14.1 million. And the Blue Jays aren't happy: Does this make them come back to the table about Shark?
  16. Man, Eric Hinske put on the pounds after he retired. That aside, the kid in me thinks it will be kind of fun to see him and Mueller as coaches.
  17. I keep thinking of him as the system replacement for DJ LeMahieu and Ronald Torreyes, undersized infielder with a very strong hit tool. I'd love to see what he can do as he moves up in the system and hopefully stays healthy.
  18. There are a lot of interesting names on that list. Edwards will be protected. And we may see Baez and Henricks on the big league club this year so they'll likely be added long before needed anyway. I also forgot McNutt and Nick Struck were still here.
  19. Is this a make or break year for Maples? Will be 22, struggled mightily in a brief stint in A-ball and has durability issues.
  20. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=9927&position=OF#value Yeah, it's a big jump but he is arguably worth it. His bWar has been 3.9 or better his last three full seasons and Oliver has him with at least a 3 WAR in each of the next three seasons.
