  1. I blame Corey Patterson, Geo Soto, Felix Pie, Brett Jackson, and Josh Vitters. I still have hope for Baez. But yes, I 100% agree with you're point. Cubs fans are ready for the new day, but a lot of them still fear the imaginary Baseball God who demands a sacrifice in the form of the career of every Cubs prospect who reaches the big leagues.
  2. Yes, that is called relief pitchers and it's not just the past 10 years or so. But I don't remember their being as many guys who spent a few years absolutely dominating and then completely falling off as there have been the past 10. Could be wrong though.
  3. Damn. I hope so, too. Mike Fiers has been doing that for a few years now. Probably will for a few months more. He's Randy Wells.
  4. There might be an opening at 3b soon. Why on earth would you say that?
  5. Forgetting the 25 year old, 3 time all star approaching 1,000 hits. :yahoo: I'm going to be really happy when Castro isn't considered a middle of the order hitter anymore. Basically, we'll have Rizzo, Bryant, and Schwarber holding down the heart of the lineup, and poor Joe's going to have to figure out how to stack Soler, Castro, and Russell around them. And lord help him if any of Baez, Alcantara, Almora, and eventually Torres start to pan out. Perennial contender problems.
  6. James Russell: 8.2 IP 0/12 BB/K. Thing or aberration?
  7. Didn't have the pleasure of watching that error, but between Gameday and Twitter, sounds like it was some Benny Hill type [expletive].
  8. To be honest, I don't even remember Wendell as a pitcher. Just a guy who ate licorice and brushed his teeth.
  9. Well, we're not going to get no hit by this guy. And really, that's all I've been hoping to get out of this for the past few innings.
  10. Looks like it's going to be an Edwin Jackson kind of a day.
  11. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_the_Colonel The Hanshin Tigers have their own Billy Goat...Colonel Sanders!
  12. The only way the Bulls could blow this one is if they bring in Schlitter.
  13. Gleyber was a year and a half old when Kerry Wood struck out 20 Astros.
  14. It seems as though over the past 10 years or so, baseball is just littered with these closers who come out of nowhere, firing bullets. And for a 2-5 year period in which they put everything they have into every pitch, they're absolutely dominant. And then they break. When they're on, they're on. When they're off, they don't tend to come back. When they do manage to make it back, it's because they learned some new tricks from the junkballers. For every Papelbon, Wagner, and Rivera who can do it for years, there's a handful of, off the top of my head: Eric Gagne Brian Wilson Chad Cordero Billy Koch Joe Borowski Carlos Marmol Brad Lidge Dan Kolb Kevin Gregg Derrick Turnbow Fernando Salas Joel Zumaya Chad Cordero Bobby Jenks ...and of course, John Rocker. And they always seem to hang on long enough for that big payday. Maybe it's too soon to lump Johnny Venters, Jason Motte, and Chris Perez in with this lot, but they're close. My point is that if someone like this is available for nothing, sure, why not. But if there's already a line forming, it's not worth the risk.
  15. Maybe Michael Jensen and Charcer Burks? Jensen bounced back well from missing 2013 (TJS?) and if nothing else, Burks has to have leapfrogged Dunston by now.
  16. Maybe this is swaying my perception, as he was pretty cool and a regular guy when I've met him. a guy i know worked at a wrigleyville bar when samardzija was first up but not very successful yet. he said jeff would often come in and drink by himself for a long while before making an extremely casual (and unsuccessful) effort to pick up a woman on his way out. I remember hearing such tales about Kyle Farnsworth, only his attempts were neither causal nor unsuccessful. And as legend has it, he was married to (or dating) a stripper at the time.
  17. At what point do Bryant, Russell and Soler lose their eligibility as "prospects?" I have to assume that at least Soler is on the verge.
  18. This is Brett/BN's take on Null. Doesn't tell a ton, but it's something.
  19. Are there any reports out on Jeremy Null? He's out there dominating again.
  20. He'll fit well in the spare parts shop that is the Iowa roster.
  21. Schwarber's Dong; Now there's a user name waiting to happen.
  22. I'm still baffled as to how they ended up giving him away to a divisional rival. My only guess is that Hamilton had a full NTC, and refused to waive it for any other team, and the Rangers knew this too.
  23. He's always put up solid enough numbers. Just not the type of numbers that a player of his..nature would need to make it.
