  1. If the Mets are hoping for a premium prospect Jon Niese, then nobody's a good trade partner for them. And I doubt they expect to get Baez. But they can ask. And nobody's going to want Mike Olt as anything but a throw in. And I doubt we expect anything for him. But we can ask. It's standard haggling, and if there is any truth to this, they probably meet in the middle with, say, Alcantara.
  2. 4 MM this year, 4.5MM next year. Everything else is team options. I figure we could do the the old [expletive] for shite swap for Edwin.
  3. We're still only 1.5 game back*. We can do this. * I'm not even going to track the division until the Cardinals prove their mortality.
  4. I'm not arguing TT's point at all. But beyond that, a reliable 4-5 starter is more valuable than a very good reliever in what is shaping up to be a deep, strong bullpen.
  5. With Wada to tbe DL official and Turner's set back, we're going to need one. Can we give Roache another shot? Sure, why not. But then again, we have two veteran starting pitchers being used as mop ups in the bullpen. And seeing as our pen has seemingly taken shape with Rodon, Stropp, Grimm, Motte, Ramirez returning, and Soriano at some point, there roll there is going to become less before it becomes larger. Or here's an alternative; Justin Grimm. He hasn't started in some years, so I don't know how long it would take to stretch him out. But depending on how long Wada will be out and whether or not there are any viable trade options, would it be worthwhile?
  6. The Ramirez news makes me happy. The Wada news makes me neither happy nor sad, as I not only saw it coming but thought it already happened. But we should probably get on the horn about a starting pitcher, anyway.
  7. But with Felix Dubront, at least there was that glimmer of hope that he could become something better than Felix Doubront. And at the time, the goal was still to audition as many guys as possible in hopes of striking gold, or at least filling holes. Jon Niese is just Jon Niese. And our goal is to win games. And I'm not certain that Jon Niese is any better at that than Travis Wood or Edwin Jackson.
  8. Steve Traschel. Matt Lawton. Craig Monroe. John Grabow.
  9. Any news on what Underwood's is for? ETA that nobody on Twitter seems to know why. One guy said "he didn't look right in his last start." And there's this tweet from Duane from about an hour ago. Doesn't sound like something a guy would post for something minor. But who knows. Oh, and Dunston's apparently back to the DL too.
  10. I'm fairly certain they just promoted Eugene from The Walking Dead. http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140217163038/walkingdead/images/2/25/Eugene411box.png Hopefully he does a lot less walking than the past few years.
  11. Sure, I'll take him. If nothing else, he fills our hole at not Mike Baxter.
  12. Yeiler Peguero BB/K Meter: 19/12. Don't act like you're not becoming intrigued. Speaking of slightly intriguing, some guy named Schwarber went 3-4 with a 2B & HR. I wonder if he's related to the Cubs DH.
  13. Surprising power, eh? As in the kind that can just sneak up on you?
  14. I doubt he'll be up long enough to rent a place. I assume he'll be staying at a...ok, I can't even say it.
  15. Almora 2-4, 2B Happ 2-3, BB Alcantara, Schwarber, Villanueva, Vogelbach, McKinney, Torres, Jimenez: 4-28 , 3BB Underwood rocked for 6 ER with 3/1 BB/K in 1 IP. Not fun.
  16. Tuck him snugly back under Bosio's wing, and who knows. I'd offer them Vogelbach and Francescan. If they want more, we throw in Lake or Beeler. If they still don't like it, we shrug 'em off and walk away.
  17. He's only 32 and played in the majors as recently as 2 years ago. This isn't at all strange or interesting for the purposes of this board. If it was some journeyman hoping to work his way back, it wouldn't be interesting. But personally, I find it interesting any time a former star quietly resurfaces in the minors. And while he's not Barry Zito humbly accepting an assignment, he was as fairly big deal once upon a time. Lol...He was a big time prospect, but he was never really much in the big leagues. Best season was 2.7 WAR. Only had more than 1 WAR twice. Multiple seasons below -1.5. Memory serving you well, WSR. I don't know what's serving you, but BBR's serving me a 3.7, 3.6, and a 2.1, as well as a handful in the -0.3- -0.9 range, but no -1.5. My point is that he was monster prospect with a successful big league career. When guys like that sign a minor league deal with a comeback in mind, it tends to make some degree of news. And it's the first I'd heard of it.

  19. [expletive], I had no idea how good Quintana had been. And signed through 2020 on a team friendly deal. I'd just as soon pick up a rental and sign someone in the offseason than give up what it would take. If their rotation of the not too distant future is Sale, Rodon, Quintana, and Fulmer, with Robertson closing, they might not need an offense. And lord help the AL Central if they manage to extend Samardzjia on to of that.
  20. If it wasn't him, it would be Fffelipeee Pauliiino or Dddallass Beelller. So I'm not sure what you were expecting.
  21. On a random note, the 1st Baseman for the Omaha Storm Chasers is Casey Kotchman, who despite popular belief, still plays baseball.
  22. http://www.bleachernation.com/2015/06/25/report-cubs-targeting-scott-kazmir-as-possible-trade-piece/ I feel as though he's been brought up in multiple trade threads. But seeing as there's some actual smoke here, it should have its own thread. He's been healthy and productive for almost 2 1/2 seasons after being left for dead. So far, he's put together a 1.9 WAR. It's easy for people to go crazy in terms of potential return. And if you look at the Facebook thread attached to this, plenty of them are. My starting offer would be Dan Vogelbach and Daury Torrez. And I'm sure that a lot of you laughing and desperately searching the web for gifs and memes. But using as a template the package that we got for a guy who was at the time, one of the best starting pitchers in the NL, and with a 3.5 WAR to back it up, Ryan Dempster, it's not that unrealistic. Sure, the return was a bit of a disappointment following the Delgado fiasco. But the blocked, fringe top 100 prospect and little known but intriguing young pitching prospect was a very good return for the front end but non-elite rental. Yeah, Dempster was 35 at the time and Kazmir 31, but when talking about a healthy and productive 2 month rental, does that really make a difference?
  23. A system that can afford to use prospects as currency. Big difference. But yes, the 2012-2014 playing seasons served 2 purposes: 1. Spinning short term assetsinto long term assets prospects: Shark, Garza, Hamel, Soriano, Dempster, Maholm, Hairston, Feldman, Soto, Valbuena, Reed Johnson, became Addison Russell, Jake Arrieta, Kyle Hendricks, Pedro Strop, Neil Ramirez, CJ Edwards, Billy McKinney, Christian Villanueva, Mike Olt, Arodys Vizcaino, Corey Black, Ivan Pineyro, and Victor Caratini. 2. Auditioning former players and prospects who were still young enough for a glimmer of hope and our own prospects who otherwise wouldn't be given a look in the big leagues who could play a roll in our own future: Valbuena, Coghlan, Ruggiano, Borbon, Watkins, Vitters, Jackson, Sweeney, Cardenas, LaHair, Volstad, Wada, and just about anyone who'd ever appeared on a Red Sox Top 10 list. In short. A lot of [expletive] was flung at the walls and ceiling; and a pretty good amount stuck.
  24. Sucks. But even if he were to miss all of next season, he'd be 25 at the start of the 2017 season, and he's under control through 2019.
