  1. This is absolutely true. Hendry gets [expletive] upon over going overboard on Soriano, Fukudome, and Zambrano. But that's what big market teams do, although he did outbid himself on Soriano and Zambrano. But a big problem was his going nuts on guys like Aaron Miles and John Grabow for no apparent reason. He was like an eBay user who didn't want to be bothered with the auction so he hit buy now everytime.
  2. I don't remember Marquis signing being a big to-do. I remember it more as a JIM HENDRY SIGNS TED LILLY and jason marquis FROM HIS DEATH BED.
  3. Yeiler Peguero now has 10 BB in 41 AB. Starlin Castro had 23 BB in his first DSL season (253) at the same age.
  4. They way I see it, unless we're talking a signability gamble such as Maples, beyond the first 5 rounds (and that's being very generous,) everything's a humongous crap shoot. Is there really that thick a line separating the #150 draft prospect from the #300? With high schoolers in the mix, you're essentially paying for the right to sculpt the raw talent of a kid that may be out of baseball before he's old enough to drink.
  5. Because the whole point is to bring up someone who can, you know, hit. Villanueva is a huge question mark in that aspect at best. See, now that games actually matter, this would be a great time to have something like a Jake Fox or Bryan LaHair who could come up and go on a tear until they stop feeding him a steady diet of straight fastballs.
  6. I completely forgot that we drafted Michael Brenly twice. Thanks for that little resource, BTW. Am I the only one who didn't know that we drafted Sonny Gray in the late rounds of 2008? I know that type of thing happens all the time, IE 2003 Tim Lincecum, but damn.
  7. I've been following him for a bit, but he's really hit the skids lately. .158/.273/.184, bringing his season down to .276/.342/.347. Was looking at various draft reports on him and came across this: . Eckstein.
  8. Following an Almora double that just missed being a dong. They got no-hit in game two. That was Game 1. FWIW, it was vs. the White Sox #2 prospect (or maybe that was #2 pitching prospect.) Which is like saying the 2nd hottest girl with a lazy eye and facial hair.
  9. I have no reason to believe that we will come back and win this. We'll get 'em next time.
  10. Kind of my point. What made that draft so exciting was grabbing the shiniest toys they could, and then throwing as much money as they could to get them. This draft may be full of yawners, but I trust that they did a lot of homework on these guys. And with the exception of #1, I wouldn't be at all surprised if 3-4 years from now, this year's uninspiring picks aren't doing as well or better than the guys that made that draft so exciting.
  11. At the end of the day, how thin is the line between an exciting draft and a boring one? Going back to 2011 when we went overslot crazy, we did a good job starting to reload a baron farm system. But outside of rounds 1&2, how exciting is it looking today? 3: DeVoss ($375K:)Gone. Out of baseball. 4. Zych ($400K:) Gone. Traded/sold to Seattle. Was looking decent at one point. 5. Scott ($275K:) Doing well for himself between A+/AA, but just turned 23 6. Gretzky ($375K:) Gone. Hanging on in the Angels' system, but I suspect it's more to do with the namd than anything else. 7. Schlecht ($275K:) Gone. Out of baseball. Never made his was past Rookie league. 8. Lockhart ($385K:) Exists: Perennial top 30 place holder. 11. Dunston (1.275K) Hanging in there. Doubt he'll ever do much more than that. 13. Martin (250K) Ditto. 14. Maples (2.5MM) Ugh 25. Shoulders (295K) Gone. But nobody can take away his 2013 Minor League Name of the Year award. And he had one insanely hot streak early last year. Has a .152/.219/.242 line with 0 HR between Texas' A+/AAA affiliates. 26. Jensen (225K) Looking good when healthy. 27. Easterling (200K) Gone. But whatever he's doing, I'll bet he looks damn sexy doing it.
  12. Then again, if there's nobody who really excites them, is it that unrealistic to think that rather than grabbing the next best available at slot, they're stocking up on guys they think they can get for a lot less? Well ... my response would be what are they planning with the extra money, then? If every guy is saving a bit for the Cubs (and we certainly don't know that), then what do they do with the extra money? he's implying #PTR No idea. But money is money, and lest we forget, this is a business as well as a ball club. And spending money on one thing when you can get a viable alternative for a fraction of the cost was one of the principals upon which this regime was built.

  14. So it's a non deadline deal and he had no idea when it will be done. If nothing else, he's set himself up to be right if we make a biggish trade in the next month.
  15. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he plays the game the right way.
  16. Serious question; is unused draft pool money allowed to go toward the IFAs? I ask because I'm not sensing much excitement over any of these guys.
  17. But still, Ramirez, Motte, Grimm, Strop, Rondon, Soriano looks pretty solid. Assuming we don't run into any lefties in the late innings.
  18. Best case scenario; we get a bargain on a stud closet. Worst case scenario; Cubs fans can go back to blaming Soriano whenever anything goes wrong.
  19. DMs can be regulated via medication, diet, and excercise. PMs is just something you have to wait out, I'm afraid.
  20. I heard that Carl was wearing a purple fanta shirt and saw Hamels at a Starbucks in Lincoln Park. and he knows papelbon's father in law Until Papelbon's spotted at a Wrigleyville bar singing Go Cubs Go, it's all lies.
  21. This has been going on for too long for it not to register with MLBTR, BN, or even any of the fan blogs. If there was even the slightest hint of smoke regarding a big time trade, this Carl fellow would not be the only one posting it.
