  1. My thinking is that Baxter is a space filler while Javy's given a few games to readjust to 3B.
  2. If we were to trade Castro, it would not be a sell move. It would be to acquire a young stud SP. As for Fowler and Montero, take a quick look at what we gave up for them. Then ask if they're any more valuable now than they were then. Then ask yourself if that's the type of return, give or take, is worth tanking for.
  3. And how awesome would it be if we were bad next year so we could trade more veterans for prospect? And then the year after that, so we could trade those prospects for prospectier prospects. And the year after that so we could trade our proespectier prospects for the prospectiest prospects yet. And the year after that so...you get the idea. In all seriousness, I will not shoot you. But if given my druthers, I'd prefer to be good and acquire more good players.
  4. It's an Internet message board. If another man's venting gets you that worked up, click ignore. Ironically, what gums up the game threads isn't the meatballish knee jerk so much as the 4, 5, 6 others who pounce on them. Now if you're looking for some real meatballery, check into a Twitter feed during a game that's not going in the Cubs' favor. Some of these folks are legitimately out of their ever loving minds.
  5. Well, good thing we've got our magic orb that tells us which marginal players will turn in really bad performances in any given two months, so there's no chance of having any bad players again. i have a magic orb that hates Phil Coke, Jason Motte, Mike Olt, Mike Baxter forever Mine will have forgotten that Mike Baxter exists by this time next week.
  6. If the need for another SP came up, I'm not sure Jimenez would be the one. Hamels would be the obvious choice. But if he wasn't an option for us I'd much rather get a rental now and shop around come winter.
  7. Everybody wants Hamels. And there's only one. Which tends to drive the cost up. Damned capitalism.
  8. My next thought for Soler was Jose Guillen, with more 20-25 HR power with a higher BA. As for Javy, I toyed with everyone from Jose Hernandez to Joe Randa to Melvin Mora. Perhaps Hernandez would be the most realistic comp given his current resume, not that that would by any means be the worst thing, especially from a 7 hitter) but I like to think there's more in store. Just not enough so to upgrade to, say, Ron Santo or Scott Rolen.
  9. But aren't most bullpens composed of maybe 2-3 reliables, 2 more somewhat reliables, and the rest a revolving door? To start the season, we had 3 very strong options in Rondon, Strop, and Ramirez, with Grimm on the DL. Jackson has been mostly consistent as well, and Motte was a nice reclamation, as was Coke as a last minute flier. Schlitter was serviceable enough last year, so it made sense to give him the first crack at the last spot. With Rivero, Rosscup, Parker, Britton, and Jokisch, we had some decent depth. Trouble wasn't so much the pen's makeup as starters being pulled too early, and entrusting the wrong guys at the wrong time.
  10. Going forward, how realistic are these relatively realistic comparisons? 1. CF: Alberto Almora: Cameron Maybin* .247/.311/.367 37 HR 9.5 WAR (9 seasons) 2. 2B Addison Russell: Ryne Sandberg- .285/.344/.452 282 HR 67.5 WAR (16 seasons) 3. 1B Anthony Rizzo: Jeff Bagwell- .297/.408/.540 449 HR 79.6 WAR (15 seasons) 4. LF Kris Bryant: Dave Winfield- .283/.353/.475 465 HR 63.8 WAR (22 seasons) 5. C Kyle Schwarber: AJ Pierzynski** .281/.320/.423 180 HR 22.5 WAR (18 seasons) 6. RF: Jorge Soler: Joe Carter***- .259/.306/.464 396 HR 19.3 WAR (16 seasons) 7. 3B Javy Baez: Chris Sabo****- .268/.326/.445 116 HR 16.4 WAR (9 seasons) 8. SS: Starlin Castro: Tony Fernandez*****- .288/.347/.399 94 HR 45 WAR (17 seasons) What I did here was come up with some names off the top of my head, then looked up their career lines. Some I agreed with more than others. But keep in mind, these are realistic-ish comps, not ceilings. And we could realistically have most, if not all of these guys through their primes. I would very much enjoy this team. * ** *** **** *****
  11. While I agree with David (which I'm sure thrills him to no end) about Montero, the fact that we have this juggernaut in AA who happens to play the same position could be more than enough to spark a Free Kyle Schwarber campaign in the very near future.
  12. For some reason, MiLb first pitch app wouldn't update the Iowa game last night, but mother of God, that was some good [expletive]. Add Villanueva's 2-5 with an HR to Mendy and Javy's monster day. And I'm beginning to wonder if there's anything to this Donn Roach fellow. Doesn't seem to strike out or walk much of anyone, but he seems to be getting the job done. Possible back end fodder if needed?
  13. My immediate reaction too Well, yeah. But there's also the tragic fact that our reserves feature a worse option than Jonathan Herrera.
  14. Wow, there's a lot of sub .600 OPS going on in there.
  15. yessssssss legit excited about this. I wonder if they're considering trying to use him this year. I would think even if it's not plan A the move at least allows them to do it if they so please. I'll be surprised (and likely disappointed) if we don't at lest see either him or CJ this year. I'm not sure if I share this enthusiasm. If our system has one weakness, it's starting pitching. If the big league club loses a back end SP, Travis Wood wouldn't be the worst replacement ever. But beyond that, the pickins' are slim to say the least.
  16. I was thinking the same thing. 14 run/15 hit outburst from the I Cubs, and Javy and Schwarber had but a measly single each. Mendy was 2-5 with a 2B, but also 3 K. On the plus side, McKinney with a 2B and 3BB and Villanueva was a single short of the cycle. I don't know why I keep thinking that he's in the 25-26 bracket, when he's only 6 months older than Javy. Not that it's a big deal or that it changes your point, but I'm pretty sure Villanueva is more like 18-20 months older than Javy. I meant Mendy. Don't know why I said Javy.
  17. And like that, Villanueva's line at Iowa is up to .286/.346/.479/.825 (.273/.342 /.476/.817 between Iowa/Tenn.) At 23 and he's supposed to be very strong defensive 3B. He could end up a solid chip.
  18. As I recall, he went on some kind of uber-hot streak last year.
  19. Good K/9 numbers, but still walking too many and getting BABIP luck (.212). But yeah it's good to see he's cut his BB/9 numbers nearly in half and upped his K/9. He's still 25 at A+.... Didn't realize he was quite that old, but doesn't he get somewhat of an age mulligan due to his visa issues, or whatever happened with the Yankees?
  20. Want to know someone else who's quietly done very well so far? Juan Paniagua.
  21. I was thinking the same thing. 14 run/15 hit outburst from the I Cubs, and Javy and Schwarber had but a measly single each. Mendy was 2-5 with a 2B, but also 3 K. 22. he does that like every year He's still a 34 year old rental and we're still a fringe contender. With this in mind, how much are we willing to give up?
