I probably wouldn't read too much into it. They think he's interesting, it costs nothing to snag him and maybe he earns a spot or maybe later on you sneak him through waivers. Nothing lost by having him if there's optimism he can rebound. Last year they did the same thing with Joe Ortiz and he had zero impact on the MLB roster. Basically playing musical roster spots until 40 man decision time. On the other hand, now that they're ready to spend big money on big players, they're not going to have the extra 3-5 mill laying around to fill holes with lottery tickets like Maholm, Feldman, Baker, Motte, Veres, etc.
