  1. I dont have the Koyie Hill hate that a lot of people do, he is what he is, a light hitting backup catcher. However, when we have 3 guys in the minors in Castillo, Chirinos, and Clevenger that not only could do a better job for next to nothing but could possibly generate some trade interest, this is just a pointless move. Hes like the new Chad Fox. If you like the guy so much, offer him a minor league coaching job. Im OK with Jeff Baker. Hes an OK utility player and hes not really holding anyone back. Id much prefer him over giving a multi year deal to another Aaron Miles type.
  2. Larkin, Larry Walker and Crime Dog all deserve in at some point as well. Raffy would if it werent for, well, you know. Journeyman Extrodinaire Lenny Harris? really? Does this mean Aaron Miles will one day grace the ballot?
  3. I dont know what to think about 2012. If we were to get Adrian or Fielder this year, which Isnt going to happen unless we end up grossly overpaying for a few months of Adrian around the deadline then the 2011 team would be very competitve. However, in the next 2 years were going to see the departures of Aramis, Kosuke, Byrd, Zambrano, and Dempster,at which point we'll be left with Castro, Colvin, Soto, whichever prospects pan out and a tough decison on how to build around them.
  4. Didnt we have this exact discussion this time last year?
  5. As long as hes willing to take an incentive filled contract, hes the very definition of a low risk/high reward player.
  6. Yes, this will definitely happen. fine with me as long as it means he's playing 1B there and pujols is playing 1B for us. If Pujols were to play for us, the St. Lou folks backlash would probably rival that of Clevelands for LaBron.
  7. I know that Hamilton was never a Cub, nor was he ever supposed to be, but I sure as hell wish wed just kept him when we Rule 5d him. What was the deal anyway we had with the Reds that we handed him to them on a silver platter?
  8. Branyan is better than Hinske, Cantu and probably Glaus at this point. He's probably pretty comparable to Overbay, and Laroche, and he could possibly be had for a relative bargain because of his atypical offensive profile and history as a bench player. Thats probably because hes a bench player.
  9. While Im not in love with the idea, as far as realistic options go, he may be our best bet.
  10. Who knows, he may come in handy as Dusty mows through his starters. I remember a time when people thought that trading Dontrelle was going to be the next Brock for Broglio.
  11. Kind of makes one wonder, how much worse would LaHair be than the other craptacular 1st base options? As far as Im concerned, unless we sign Dunn or trade for Gonzalez, may as ell trade for Davis and let him and LaHair duke it out in spring training. Or else just see if we could sign Berkman or Nick Johnson for cheap 1 year deals and keep LaHair/Davis as insurance.
  12. Id take a flyer on Zach Duke. Is the Pirates LaRoche the kind of good one?
  13. Plate discipline is definitely a significant issue. If Chirinos or Castillo is all we have to give up to try to fix that, though, I'd be all for it. Exactly. Much like Highlanders, when it comes to backup catchers, there can only be one. And if for some idiotic reason, they decide to waste money on Koyie Hill, none. At 27 years old and barely spending any time above AA, Chirinos value is little to none. Someone like Chris Davis would probably be considered selling high on him, even if the plan is to sign another 1B and use Davis as a backup or even AAA. We also have Clevenger in the wings, so between the 3, it would be wise to trade 1 of them for something of some value.
  14. Heres my take on it. Last year, everyone wanted Mike Cameron to replace Milton Bradley. We "missed out" on Cameron to Boston. Howd that work out for them. We then settled for Marlon Byrd, who had a damn good year. That being said, we could have lived just as well without either Cameron or Byrd with Colvin in center and Kosuke in right, and Nady could have filled in vs. lefties at times. This being said, unless something great comes along, IE Dunn, Adrian Gonzalzez in trade, theres really no need for a mediocre veteran to fill in at 1st when a Chris Davis would probably be just as good as Nick Johnson or Lyle Overbay. Granted, Davis will likely give us mediocre at best numbers, but hes 24 years old and could surprise us, wheras with an over the hill vet, you pretty much know what to expect. If all it takes is one of our AAAA catching prospects, I say go for it.
  15. +1 Davis has some upside and would be an excellent buy low candidate, especially if it only costs the Cubs someone like Castillo or Chirinos. However, if the Cubs are going into 2011 expecting Davis to live up to his numbers in the minors as the starting 1B, we're going to be in for a rough year. If we were going to go the failed prospect route, Id prefer to go after Alex Gordon. However, if we could get Chris Davis for Castillo or Chirinos, Id be all about it, and Id certainly prefer him over someone like Overbay, especially if Dunn is off the table.
  16. We all know how this turns out. Hoffpauir hits 60 home runs for the Ham Fighters and comes home in 2012 to a 1 year deal or a minor league deal with an invite and he continues to toil in mediocrity between AAA and big league benches.
  17. I think the only thing you need on your resume to join the Baltimore Orioles is Ex Cub. Im sure they're just drooling thinking about the moment that we finally give up on Samardjzia.
  18. Theres really no point targeting Lee as we wouldnt win a bidding war with the Yankees. Sure, the Rangers will probably be in on the bidding, but it will be more of a thank you type of thing to him or an attempt to appease the fans as the Brewers did with Sabbathia even though they knew they wouldnt win out. As for the list of "inning eaters", Id prefer take a low risk gamble on someone like Ducherer, Bedard, or dare I say Harden if theyd take a reasonable incentive laden deal. As of now, our potential starter pool beyond Z and Dempster consists of Wells, Gorz, Silva, Coleman, Cashner, Jay Jackson, Samardjizia, and maybe Carpenter and Archer as dark horses. Not great, but not awful.
  19. True, but that won't stop us from declaring whether we think they are good moves or not the moment after they happen. This is America, after all. If there anything like the Aaron Miles or John Grabow deals, we can pretty much chalk them up as bad moves before the ink drys.
  20. I know this sounds similar to the very open ended being 4 big moves away from contention comment, but I guess the question is does 2-3 good moves mean: Trade for Adrian Gonzalez or sign Adam Dunn Trade for Zack Greinke or sign low risk/high reward pitcher IE Ducherer or Bedard aquire solid late/middle reliever for cheap OR Does it mean trade Fukudome and/or Zambrano for salary relief sign Brian tallett ro 3 year deal with NTC and player option sign Lyle Overbay to 3 year deal Maybe this could be an interesting off season after all.
  21. I would have been very interested in keeping Snyder, LaHair, and Canzler around to compete for a bench job. Im sure I Cub-4-Life Dubois will be back there by spring training.
  22. Wait a year for him to be a FA since we will probably not be winning the WS next year and keep every player that you mentioned. Sign Dunn and Wood. If you have to have a SP look for someone like Bedard or Sheets until the kids in the minors are ready. Id trade anyone not named Castro. In fact, Id be more willing to part with jackson, Im assuming you mean Brett than Archer.
  23. We can either sign Dunn and have a figthing chance or Nick Johnson or Lyle Overbay and fight the Astros and Pirates for the celler.
  24. . Except for the cubs he would be in Center. Ive heard that TB tried him there in the past, and he wasnt very good. However, if theyre really itching for Crawford in center, the thing to do could be to try Colvin at 1st instead of wasting more money on Johnson.
  25. What Carl Crawford will essentially give you is an above average center fielders offensive production at left field, which is all fine and dandy if you can make up that left fielders production elsewhere, but you can, so if you sighn Nick Johnson, you're essentially getting a second basemans production at first.
