  1. I'm actually having a tough time understanding this sentence. But I've thought all along this team could compete in the NL Central, namely because it is the NL Central. I think they can compete, but yeah its because its the Central. Cubs could be a very good team if a lot of things go right: Zambrano has to be an ace and not a side show the remains of Brandon Webb have to be successfully reanimated Monster walk years from Aramis and Pena repeat of 2010 from Byrd Soriano to earn his money Soto, Castro, and Colvin to be the 1st successful trio of farm grown Cubs position players since Banks, Williams, and Santo Blake Dewitt reaches his ceiling of an OK ballplayer Koyie Hill doesnt make it past spring training A solid bullpen with Marmol, Marshall, Guzman and maybe O Day If all of this happens, we might just have ourselves a ballclub.
  2. Mets took Morla. 3 guesses who took Lambert, and the 1st 2 dont count.
  3. If Hendry gets all this done, it could be his most productive offseason yet. If we could get O'Day, Id be happy with it,because hes legitamately good, but Frasor would be overkill. With Marmol, Marshall, hopefully Guzman, hopefully a productive Grabow, probably Cashner, and a hole host of big league ready AAAAs, we should be able to piece together a solid pen. Might I again suggest trying our luck with a non tender such as Jenks or Okajima?
  4. Im pretty surprised that he and Boras took a 1 year with the Orioles, Blue Jays, and suddenly free spending Natspos after him.
  5. All this talk about Davis, Pena, and Laroche, but why do I get the feeling that when alls said and done, our options will be down to Lyle Overbay and a bidding war with the Newark Bears for Richie Sexon?
  6. Adam Laroche has quietly been a very solid player his entire career. If we sign Laroche, I wont jump for joy, but Ill be OK with it.
  7. There has to be money somewhere. Were one of the biggest market teams in baseball with the highest ticket prices, and they almost always sell out. Granted, Hendry handed out some awful contracts, but the organization cant be flat broke. They just need to stop glorifying Wrigley Field and whore it out a bit more. As far as Im concerned it can be called McDonalds-Starbucks-Coca Cola-Wal-Mart Field if it will bring in enough money to field a good team.
  8. Sadly, in 2 short years, weve gone from a Baseball Superpower to hoping we can outbid the Nationals and Blue Jays for the last available not quite horrible 1st base option.
  9. Dont forget The Mets and Angels who always seem to have money to burn. Dodgers too if they dont make the Fielder trade.
  10. Ill always be a Woody fan, but cosidering the financial state of this organization, by no means would this be money well spent. If anything, it would probably be a PR move to appease the idiots who were upset that Sanberg left the organization.
  11. With these insane contracts out there, one has to wonder if the player association will pressure Pujols to take some kind of monster money contract from the Yanks, Red Sox, or whoever rather than give the Cards a discount.
  12. I think Im at the point where Im not as concerned with who we get, but what we give up for them be it in prospects or money. Theres really nobody out there that will make the Cubs that much better of a team,
  13. Between the A Gon deal and the Sorian-esqu werth deal, The Brewers are officially priced on for post 2011 Prince Fielder, so they're probably trying to get what they can for him.
  14. Exactly. Sounds like the Cubs' pursuit was at least part of the reason the Red Sox decided to do the deal (presumably without the extension in place). Which sucks. It was a nice though to entertain while it lasted. Oh well, back to our reality of a sucky team with little to no likelyhood of improving in the near future.
  15. I guess it makes one wonder if Sam Fulds still untouchable.
  16. HAHA this better not be true. There should be no hesitance in doing any deal involving Colvin for a much better well established player. Colvin is far far far from being someone Hendry is scared to deal. Come on Honestly, Cashner and Archer are the only ones Id refuse to move, and we might end up having to give up one of the 2. Im probably one of the very few Colvin fans still out there, but if Hendry refuses to move him to get A Gon, he should be smothered.
  17. Id love it if we ended up snaking A Gon from the Red Sox. As for the 3 way deal, I dont quite get that because the problem wasnt the Sawx completing the trade, it was agreeing to the extension.
  18. I know that Alex Gordon has been an ongoing topic of discussion on this board pretty much since the time D Lee was traded, but other than that, have their been any rumors or indications out there that Gordons even remotely on the Cubs radar?
  19. [expletive] Boras. How great would it be if we lost out to Baltimore for Pena and Washington for Webb and ended up with Overbay and Kevin Milwood or something of the like?
  20. If all it takes is Colvin, that's fine with me. The way I figure it, though, is that the Royals don't have to trade Gordon and we'd have to give them reason to deal him. Colvin strikes me as a player Moore would love and he's expendable here and probably overvalued after last season. This is true, but we dont have to trade Colvin either. Chris Davis is younger and his big league career has gone very similarly to Gordons so far with a strong start and than falling off a cliff, and we can get him for an expendable backup catcher. Colvin still has value, and might not be as expendable as you think depending how much money we have to spend on outfielders in the next few years. We have Soriano for the next 4 years, or until he turns to dust, whichever comes first but other than that, theres no guarantee that Jackson or Guyer will be any better or worse than Colvin.
  21. If this were to happen this would almost certainly make Alex Gordon instantly expendable, fwiw That's a similar package to Archer and Colvin (along w/ another prospect or two). If I'm the Cubs, I'd get into the talks. I wouldn't offer Archer, but I'd pitch them a deal of Carpenter, Dolis, and Colvin, with maybe another lesser talented player thrown into the deal. Youd offer Carpenter, Dolis, and Colvin for Zach Greinke? Really? Kyle Drabek is one of the top prospects in baseball. I like Archer a ton, but he'll need at least a repeat performance in 2011 before hes on the same level as Drabek as a prospect. Wed probably have to offer more like Archer, McNutt, and Colvin, probably throw in someone like Carpenter or Dolis if we want Greinke.
  22. The price is what scares me with him. In Gordon's case, Dayton Moore loves guys like Colvin and there's a very real possibility he would value Colvin's skillset highly enough to center the trade around him and maybe a couple low level type guys. In Anderson's case, the Red Sox are much better than the Royals at valuing players and would likely keep Anderson rather than trade him for less than top notch value. Anderson might be the better option, but he'll cost more in prospects than it would probably be worth for a guy who may not even be ML ready yet. I dont see why we should have to center a trade around Colvin. Gordon will be 27 years old when spring training starts, and after a promising start to his big league career, hes done nothing the past 2 years. Colvin for Gordon straight up sounds fair to me. Otherwise, Id just as soon trade Castillo or Chirinos for Chris Davis whose younger.
  23. All of the sudden Tejada for 1/6.5 looks like a damn good bargain.
