I was liking the idea of an offensive coach overhauling his side of the ball and keeping the defense more or less intact. One of the things I'm most concerned with Trestman's lack of recent NFL experience is a lack of relationships with top notch defensive talent. At this point I think they have 3 options, A) Bring in some recently fired head coach with a defensive philosophy, or an available DC. A Lovie type, although obviously not Lovie. Sort of what GB did with Capers. Or a Rob Ryan/Eric Mangini type. This could help on 2 fronts, the well respected defensive mind who has his own list of contacts for assistants, and assisting the raw head coach in the broader aspects of the job. B) Promote somebody else in the system to maintain continuity. The drawback of this is you obviously start watering down the quality of the staff when an assistant comes up and then has to hire people under him. C) Find somebody else's up and coming defensive mind and go from there. I think I'd prefer C. Like when STL took Lovie from TB's linebacker coach to their DC and turned around a dismal unit. B would be nice, but the Bears D was Lovie, and to a lesser extent Marinelli. Take away those two guys, plus their purported right hand man in Babich and I think you're diluting the quality a bit too much. Running this style of defense without using the best could be a disaster.

Because college football programs never foolishly stick by somebody. Very true, but damn, you'd think they'd learn. In this case though, is it possible Notre Dame could get in any trouble? I'm not seeing how anyway. I'm not sure how they could get into real trouble.

My first thought too. What a damn weird story. If he was in on it it speaks to his willingness to do whatever it takes. If he was duped it shows he is coachable. Win/win. The only issue is he can't tackle.

Technically, he had a lot of help producing that talent. He must have supplied the raw goods on his own while his wife developed it once they were in the organization.

I may have been wrong on trestman. If he can produce that type of talent with little trestman he may be able to fix the line all on his own.

He's under contract. If Phil wants to keep him (or Marc) I don't know why they just tell him to suck it up. Two reasons, you don't want to poison the waters of your head coach's first staff and that stuff will make it tough to recruit elite coaching talent in the future. You can ask him to reconsider and try to persuade him to stay, but if a DC wants to leave after a HC change, it may just be for the best to let him leave.

With the vast majority of those rosters not good enough to play professionally, let alone in the NFL. And the vast majority of opponent rosters. You've taken an obtuse stance you're now forced to defend based on selectively reading quotes from Emery. I've taken the only rational stance. Emery is the personnel man tasked with bringing in the talent. NFL coach/GM relationships vary from team to team, with some GMs being de facto assistants to the head coach. That is not the case with the Bears.

Holding on to what? I'm not talking about reports of an extension from the media. I'm talking about the discussion on here in reaction to those reports.

The point is the offensive line has to be fixed with personnel decisions made by personnel guys. Trestman won't fix it. Personnel decisions will fix it. Montreal media members talking about how Trestman is going to "reform" the offensive line are not saying anything meaningful.

I'm not implying it, I'm saying it. Trestman will not have a huge say on the specific players brought in. His scheme will effect which way Emery goes, and in August he will be the one making decisions on whether to cut guys or not, but he won't be Bill Parcells shopping for his own groceries, a post-Super Bowl Lovie getting specific names he wants. If the offensive line is going to be "reformed" it is going to have to come from personnel men making the right decisions on offensive lineman that are not currently in the organization. did you even listen to emery's press conference? you've taken an idiotic stance and now you're married to it because of your inability to admit that you've ever been wrong. Really? You still want that extension for Lovie?

I just found it amusing that Marc Trestman has a website set up with a list of quotes about how great Marc Trestman is and the first name on the list is a guy who was reportedly happy when he was fired from his job coaching him.
