    It may be noteworthy to point out that number is 2, that award is just something handed out by the AP, and it's only 40 years old. It's as much reputational as anything else.

    And Monte Kiffin got the DC job in Dallas. He could sit out this year and get paid for it, if nothing works out. Good thing they didn't give him that extension in October.

    I would guess the chances of the defensive staff staying intact under Arians are less than if either of the other two get the gig. He's been in the NFL for a long time and has worked with many coaches. The other two have a more limited NFL resumes and presumably, trusted contacts ready willing and able to fill out their staff.

    At least Brady deserves the praise he's received. The Ray Lewis worship is manufactured nonsense.

    Yeah, you can't upset the likes of Nate Schierholtz. The Cubs don't have a single guy who is a lockdown 160 game OF starter. Even if Jackson starts in CF there should be plenty of space for Nate.

    I personally hope that Emery is not influenced by fan, media or even peer reaction and hires the best candidate he thinks is available. I hope there is more than one voice at the table on this one. Which voice? Ted? George?

    I'm not sure why you'd expect people to "see" your nonsensically subjective view of the guy. I agree with wolf actually That's fine if you share the same opinion of Emery based on what we know so far. But it's hardly anything resembling a universally accepted description of his "process".

    I'm not sure why you'd expect people to "see" your nonsensically subjective view of the guy. Because there is enough shared general knowledge of NFL football and sports on this board among even the dumbest members that makes a reasonable expectation of individual subjective views being similar enough to "see" different points of view, well, reasonable. Man you like typing a lot of words that say nothing.

    Sound? You have no idea if that is true. As far as we can tell it has only been superficially thorough. All we know is that he's shown an interest in more than a dozen names (many of them very mediocre). We know Emery has a very limited NFL resume, most recently in one of the worst run organizations in the game. We know his college resume is far from impressive. We know he showed early promise last offseason then came up well short of actually accomplishing an upgrade. I don't see anything I would describe as "sound" so far. He had a press conference that made the media happy, since he said a lot of words. And he's talked to lots of people. The soundness of this process remains very much in doubt and the results could be very bad.

    I definitely feel as though it has gone beyond thorough and into more of a distraction territory. I don't mind talking to a lot of people with varied backgrounds and taking your time. But coming up on 15 names and things start getting redundant. I feel like Emery is being thorough for the sake of being thorough instead of actually just targeting the best candidates and finding out as much about them as possible.

    I would be disappointed, although not devastated by this hire. He's older than and has been out of the NFL longer than both Gruden and Cowher. His NFL resume is scattered, at best. His last American job was as an OC at a third rate college team. I question how much respect he has among NFL coaches and how much pull he will have in trying to bring quality ones on to this staff. Theoretically he could keep the entire defensive staff in place, plus Bates as his OC, and then he'd just have to fill out the offensive underlings. But that is going to be important.

    I agree that he would certainly be a nice bench player, but I'm willing to have a lesser player there just so I don't have to hear about how great Lahair is from the meatballs again this season. I'm not really sure where he would fit, given the need for real depth at positions he can't play, the fact that the most stable position they have filled is the one he plays the most, and that the number of pre-injured arms on the staff likely means they will have to go with 13 pitchers from time to time.

    I think it's odd how little thought you put into the notion that the Cubs are desperate for 3B help and that's the only reason they have Stewart around and they are not desperate for 1B so there's literally zero justifiable reason to even consider bringing LaHair back.
