  1. I barely even care anymore but there's still an excuse to drink and eat to excess of Sunday afternoons. Also: Christian Ponder got married.
  2. Are you saying to do this instead of signing Jackson? Extending Garza doesn't make this team any better. They have plenty of time and plenty of flexibility to worry about how to keep the juggernaut together. i'm just saying i probably prefer garza to jackson if i'm choosing between the two (assuming garza is healthy). of course, having both is probably preferable, but they seem to be determined to trade garza. given the garbage available in free agency next offseason, if they don't sign jackson and trade/don't extend garza, the cubs are looking at being pretty bad for the next couple years. unless they trade half the farm for some starting pitching. Well, if it has to be the choice I'd prefer Jackson and the prospects they get for Garza than just resigning Garza. But that doesn't have to be the choice. There's no reason they can't keep both, if they want to.

  4. I'm not criticizing Campbell. I'm criticizing the stupidity of the plan that said, "hey let's ignore the starting line that plays every down when the team is on offense and rather waste millions on a backup QB who if he plays, the team is doomed anyway."
  5. They had some quality drafts here and there, but the busted one after the Super Bowl (2007) really led to a major downfall, as did the self-imposed desperation for taking offensive lineman early in 2008 and 2011. Had they done a better job of just maintaining an average line, they could have gone BPA in both of those drafts, and go OL in 2/3/4. They also wasted the Olsen pick by hiring a guy who had no use for him, had to trade for Cutler and give up a pick for Marshall.
  6. That was just a needless signing. If Cutler goes down the season is over, so don't bother wasting money on his backup. Instead of that money they spent on backup RB/QB it would have been nice to sign a legit OL.
  7. It hasn't happened yet, but that doesn't mean it can't happen at any time. Also, something to consider is that a very large number of their prospects are still leftovers from the Hendry regime, and not necessarily Epstein/Hoyer/McLeod guys, and that includes a number of guys who would fit into most people's top ten breakdown of the Cubs system. I have to imagine they would not be too hesitant to deal away any number of guys they inherited, who may still be rated relatively highly by many others but might not be respected much by this regime.
  8. The .796 is what they got out of that position for the entire season, regardless of who was playing there. However, after Rizzo was called up, he started 86 of the remaining 89 games. Barring injury or a complete collapse in his performance, I think you can pencil him in for at least 150 games. Therefore, an .850 OPS (if he's able to reach that) would make for a nice improvement over last year's production at the position. He'd have to reach 850 in the first place and then whoever backs him up (right now there's nobody I'd even consider a threat to flirt with 800 OPS) would have to not drag down the numbers in those other 12 games. You also have to consider he's going to be facing more lefties if he does play 150 games, and he wasn't any good versus lefties last year.
  9. In addition to Toeaina?
  10. what's the point of a run-off? One guy wins 28-25 in one vote and then there's another one that gets fewer voters to determine who won?
  11. Yes, it sucks to have 22 year olds that put up a .859 OPS in AAA. If that was an accomplishment it would be a meaningful statement. But an 859 in the PCL is not an accomplishment, especially by a guy who can't hack 3B. It's not like we're comparing him to people who have racked up accomplishments at this point. His competition in this run-off is a guy whose accomplishments are: 1) 11 innings in short-season ball 2) Being picked at No. 43 overall (a spot in the draft order that has produced just three players in 47 years with a career bWAR of 5 or higher.) Here is the full list of players who were in the PCL at 22 or younger who posted an .800 OPS or better last season (min. 143 ABs because that's what BR has it set at for some reason): Wil Myers Anthony Rizzo Josh Vitters everybody knows AAA is not stacked with prospects. The age doesn't really matter as much as seeing a 21 year old do something interesting in AA. Vitters has done very little in his 6 seasons of professional ball. He looks like garbage at first and then looks to hold his own. Then people give him a boost for being young while holding his own. I'm not interested in prospects who eventually learn to hold their own in the minor leagues.
  12. you don't end a season with the roster you start. If they start the season with this weak roster it is most likely going to be even weaker by the trading deadline, as they will be sellers if they are out of contention.

  14. Cowher's offense's were a hell of a lot better than any Lovie oversaw. Cowher may have been a defensive coach with a tough guy attitude but like Belichik he realized you had to throw to win in this league, a decade before Lovie figured that out. He wouldn't be my top choice, but he and Gruden would clearly be better options than keeping Lovie around. Ok, I'm probably overstating it. I just want more dramatic change than Cowher and Gruden. How would Lovie to Cowher or Gruden not be dramatic change? There aren't a ton of obvious young coaching stars on the rise. Gruden has pretty much everything on resume a Bears fan should want to see in his next coach. And he's not even 50 yet. I think Gruden could do great things with Cutler.

  16. The Cubs will be better at first base this year because Rizzo is a far superior player than LaHair. What is your argument? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD The argument is that even though Rizzo is clearly the better player, the 2013 Cubs are not likely to get improved production over the 2012 Cubs at 1B because the 2012 Cubs actually got lucky with production from LaHair for a while. Also, lots of people seem to be comparing 2012 stats simply with the stats of the guy most likely to start at that position in 2013 then saying it must be better. It doesn't work that way. The stats of all the backups affect the total, and all the backups suck. Castro is the only one who really accounted for all the production at his position, and he already did a very good job there, providing top 4 offense among NL teams at SS. I'm not sure the Cubs can reasonably expect to get much better there this year.
  17. It's not a matter of having the refs take the game from them, it was just absurd how strongly they were working in the Packers favor when GB was clearly the better team that was going to win anyway.
  18. Such nonsense. I'm not a behind the scenes fan. I'm a cubs fan. The process is worthless if the cubs don't win
  19. i am not agreeing to that at all. my goodness, some people act like the entire franchise died in a plane crash and we literally have to start over with nothing. this is a baseball team with huge resources. it is not acceptable to just punt FIVE seasons of baseball. I agree that I am not in agreement with that completely unnecessarily conservative focus.
  20. The long-term cannot be the only focus. If you want him here for 4 years, or think you can trade him in 2-3 years, then sign him to a 4-year contract if that is what it takes. You cannot only work in the ideal. Maybe you wanted other people more, but if you aren't willing to spend on them you have to settle for your third or fourth option. You have to field a team.
  21. You should never make a decision on an acquisition based on whether or not that person would make you good by himself. No one player is going to make the difference between good or bad. It could make you better, and specifically should provide you the depth needed to turnaround and make a separate deal that improves you in another area. I would agree but I don't see anymore deals that would do anything different. There just aren't players out there. my thinking was why spend or over spend for guy that improves you some but is not a game changer, or someone you want long term. I wouldn't mind jackson for 1 or possibly 2 years, I just don't see him signing that type of a deal with us. I also don't see a deal of consequence left to add depth around him. If he was one of 2 or 3 deals then I could see it. We just have such a poor offense that adding middle to end of the staff help(ok, on a normal staff) to overpay and give big years too just doesn't make much sense. What doesn't make sense about it? You still have to field a team. You still have to try to win the games you play. You still have a shot to luck into contention of nothing else. The notion that you shouldn't sign players until you are already good does not make a whole lot of sense.
  22. With a team that has sucked for 3 years and looks to be bad for at least another it should not be a surprise to anybody that there has been a lost line of disappointments. Getting upset with fans for caring doesn't make sense to me.
