    DP presented that scenario to him at the end of that interview I linked above. Uralcher said no amount of money, no scenario would have him return. Really did sound like he was really done. I listened to maybe half, and it sure seemed to me that the tone did not match up with the words as far as the "I'm done" sentiment is concerned.

    I was curious why Rondon was in there in the first place, and Villanueva was nowhere to be seen. Russell is good and all, but you don't wait until the bases are loaded to bring the guy in.

    Does the manager have some degree of impact on these decisions? I'd have to assume that he's at least consulted. I know Lou did. A celebrity manager like Lou and Dusty is probably going to have quite a bit of say, but the front office makes final decision on such a move. And in the case of Theo/Jed vs Sveum, the manager's opinion probably doesn't matter.

    Is 27 innings enough to warrant a promotion? Admittedly, I don't know much about the guy. He's got 60 total innings at A+ now, including last year in the Red Sox organization. He is 24 already and has over 500 pro innings, including 400 across the three A ball levels.

    You know, of all the new "friendly rivalries" I've made with friends since coming out East, the Cubs/Pirates one was the only one where they seemingly dominated, but have since become the dominated. I do not like this.

    I don't understand why it'd take 2 1/2 years to be effective though. Because making the change any sooner screws over guys who use it that way now, legally, and wouldn't have any time to adjust.

    Well, he's 8-7 against them with an ERA of 3.56 and OPS against of 745, compared to a career of 89-90, 4.00 and 735. He did well against them in 2012 and not so well in 2011. It may seem like he gives them fits, but not really anymore than a typical decent pitcher would.

    Well, his ceiling may be higher but that's not the same as likely future. Also, isn't a lot of the love simply based on the fact that he's one of the few names everybody has heard of? He was thought of as a top of the draft guy last year, his non-signing was the rare draft related story picked up by the general baseball media. We keep hearing about him at the top, but at the same time we keep hearing how the top of the draft isn't anything special.

    What are the limitations with regard to what you can trade away in order to get that space? Can you trade a player and cash for space?

    At least some of the purpose, and maybe the primary purpose, is simply to fill out a minor league roster.

    The lack of men getting on base in the first place also hurts.

    I'd be shocked if the Rockies made that pick with Gray available. It could be his agent telling teams he won't sign with them. I mean, what pitcher wants to go to Colorado? But what about teams thinking he's a risky bet to continue pitching the way he is given his short track record of this kind of success? I'd understand if the Rockies passed on him for those two reasons. It would make sense to me that Colorado would always lean more heavily on bats than arms at the top of the draft. Elite pitchers are unsafe bets to begin with and may be more susceptible to flaming out in that organization. They might as well try and create elite lineups and go for adequate mediocrity in the arms.

    while I wouldn't doubt these guys would purposefully call things wrong, that's a stupidly marked outfield wall.
