    I knew early-to-mid 30's but was not positive he was 34 until looking it up.

    After this year Ferentz will likely have averaged 6-7 losses per year for 4 years. Iowa could do better than that, and probably would if they hadn't given Ferentz the worst buyout in sports. You believe Iowa has averaged 6-7 losses per year because of a buyout? Being relevant on a national basis 1-2 times per decade is pretty much all Iowa can hope for, and they have gotten that out of Ferentz. They average 6.25 losses per year for a 4-year stretch in the mid 2000s. They averaged 8 losses per year during the period they moved from Hayden Fry to Ferentz. They averaged 7.8 losses during the 70s. Iowa cannot reasonably expect to do better than what they've done with Ferentz.

    You don't think so? 1700 pro touches, more than another 900 in college. He's right there with Ray Rice, and just about exactly where Shaun Alexander did when he fell apart.

    Yeah, that was really impressive. For some reason he also looked "bigger" to me on the field. Maybe Baltimore has some smaller offensive players (not just Ray Rice), or maybe he was just making more of an impact. The third option is that I was sitting closer to the TV.

    It's always that bad when they stupidly take the tarp off to play a game during what they know will be a huge storm. Had they just delayed the start and kept it covered until the worst passed they would have been fine. Don't think they could keep the tarp out no matter what during a tornado warning. They could have kept it on longer than they did and kept the players off until the storm passed. Instead they started it "on time" knowing there would be a delay. That led to pregame and 1st quarter activities ripping up the field and an impossible condition to return to.

    Wait... really? On the road, our D is running on fumes (something like eight injuries assuming Shea doesn't play), and and playing an offense that came up huge in their last outing.. It's also probably worth noting that the Bears are 2-8 against the line this year. People have been losing money on the Bears, which erodes the support they get and skews the line away from them.

    Dudes who build their own business can be just as, if not more, arrogant than people born with a silver spoon. Just look at Tom's dad. It probably should be noted that he wasn't born a billionaire, that business was tiny when they were little and grew into the behemoth it became while Tom was of working age.

    Does the fact that Florida is paying part of his salary effect the cap hit that the Hawks will have? I would have assumed that you assume the contract and the hit regardless of who is actually paying, but I could be wrong. Reports said Chicago is only paying half and taking half the hit. That might be the best part of the deal from Chicago's standpoint. Paying his full amount and taking that hit would be very bad.

    He also served as a VP of two other companies and co-founded a 3rd in between those two roles. That was certainly easier to do based on who daddy was.....He had connections far in advance of what the normal guy would have had. I'm not a fan of the apparent way in which the family acquired the team, but I don't think Tom or the rest of the kids are dolts. Didn't Tom go to Northwestern? I think they have a business model to maximize profit. He went to UofC, BA and MBA.

    You don't think this is helpful? Yeah, this team just needs veterans who provide leadership and deflect attention and pressure. That's all they need really.

    Getting into player development gets us into all sorts of squicky areas like what happened to the two top prospects that *were* in place when the front office took over. This also isn't about which regime was better. The point is these guys should be able to field a much better team than Hendry could. But they have not. They have a highly ranked farm system, but Hendry had one of those way back when. I still think these guys are good. They are highly compensated for what they do. And they should be able to work on parallel fronts, making the major league team better while improving the farm. That is not an irrationally high bar to set.

    Uh.... Yes? Wasn't Kyle the one who said picks in the top 3 or top 5 are valuable, and the rest of the draft is pretty much a crapshoot? Also this whole idea leaves out player development. It matters little who, when or how a young player was acquired if the organization sucks at developing players. Would Baez be the current player if the old regime was still in charge? Maybe, maybe not. Castro was a beast when the regime changed, not so much now.

    This! I was totally bummed about losing Laddy and 'Steeg. At least we got one of them back. I thought Ladd was a lot more useful and a much bigger loss than Versteeg. I vaguely remember being in Philly and seeing Versteeg's sloppiness with the puck hurt the Hawks on more than one occasion at that game. I'm surprised at how excited some people are about this. Maybe if they failed to win another cup after those guys left you could see some "seller's remorse" and hopes for a return of the good old days. If Versteeg wasn't on that cup team, and was just another forward out there with the same resume, I'm guessing the reactions would be much more blah than the consensus.

    Garfein is a bit of a homer for the Sox, but those other guys are just typical snarky sports talk types. The Cubs suck, therefore the tone about the Cubs is going to lean toward mocking. If the Cubs didn't suck, they wouldn't be mocked for sucking.

Maybe start a Ricketts Sucks/Whining/We're Doomed thread for this stuff? Maybe it's the cubs that have become tiresome. Their offseasons haven't exactly been intriguing.

    The fact that it has happened does not mean that it should happen, or that people should pretend to tolerate it in an effort to paint themselves as more informed fans that understand the process.

    People aren't overreacting like they will never get out of it, they are pissed because they never should have been this bad for this long. It is difficult to be this bad for this long. Every franchise may have bad 4-5 year stretches, but not necessarily this bad. But every one of those franchises deserved and got tons of [expletive] from people who bother to care how much they win for the fact that they lost this year. The notion that people have no room to complain because some other random team had a tough stretch in the 70's, or that it's okay because they weren't even trying to win, or that one day they will actually be good again so it doesn't matter is just flat out absurd. My point is that every franchise has a point in time where they have a severe shortage of talent and are unable do a quick-fix and turn it around in a year or two. AND MY POINT IS THAT THIS DOES NOT MATTER AND IS AN INCREDIBLY STUPID "POINT" TO MAKE BECAUSE WHEN THOSE TEAMS WERE IN THAT SITUATION THEY WERE RIGHTFULLY CRITICIZED. You aren't some hero because you tolerate this losing and understand how long of a struggle it is to rebuild a franchise. People like Arguello(sp?) are not more informed because they understand and tolerate this unnecessarily long process of extreme failure.
