  1. Not sure what is so impossible about fielding a squad that is older than it was the previous year.
  2. He's not if you don't have to trade cheap good cheap prospects for him.
  3. They typically would have announced already and other teams (most?) already have announced. Maybe it's an issue with the new stadium. The A's say they are at the Cubs in a SS game March 4, but it is their only road game at the Cubs this spring. The White Sox site also only has them going to Mesa once, on the 27th.
  4. Anyone able to find video of this? Power was knocked out yesterday and I have yet to see this in any highlight reel from the game. http://www.chicagobears.com/multimedia/videos/Highlights-Ravens-Bears/8d905335-2d65-45bd-8371-7533b81676f6 The Bears website has a field level view about 1:50 into this highlight package.
  5. You said it was a Chicago specific thing. Chicago first and more specifically Bears. It just isn't true. Hell, there were Denver fans who hated Cutler when he was only 25.
  6. Looks like I transposed a 7-5 season with a 5-7 season. They lost 8 games in Fry's last season, 10 in Ferentz first and 9 in his 2nd. They averaged 8 per season in whatever 4 year grouping you want to include around those seasons. And they lost a hell of a lot more pre-Fry. In an era where the balance of power has shifted dramatically away from all Big Ten teams this stretch should not be viewed as inappropriately bad. It is standard operating procedure for Iowa.
  7. This is not at all unique to Chicago. And as for Rose, you are talking about a guy who was medically cleared to play who decided he didn't want to play. That's a whole 'nother level that will rile up any fan base.
  8. I don't see what Chicago has to do with it. It is universal that large portions of a fan base will both be hung up on predetermined storylines about a player, and will blame the QB disproportionately for all struggles prior to winning a super bowl. The backup QB is the most popular player on a team is a saying that has held true for decades, by all fan bases. You and I have talked about this before, IIRC. Chicago fans eat their own; they gobble up any idiot narrative our idiot media wants to assemble and would never change their minds. If Cutler took them to a Superbowl they'd still bitch about him. If he just took them and did not win? Probably. Just like Grossman, or just like Philly did with McNabb, or just like just about any fan base would do with a 30 year old QB who has not yet won them a Super Bowl. There are Steelers fans who kind of hate Big Ben right now and lots of NY people wanting to dump Manning. Unless you are among the best of the best and can back it up with the stats, you are going to run afoul with fan bases across the league. It is not a Chicago thing.

  11. That is a strangely worded nugget.
  12. Look like he did on that seam pass to Bennett. That was a rocket I didn't think he was capable of. I didn't consider it a rocket. Pretty nice pass that was harder than his typical deliveries, but nothing huge. It looked really good coming out of his hand but toward the end it was just sort of hanging up there by the time it reached Bennett.
  13. I knew early-to-mid 30's but was not positive he was 34 until looking it up.
  14. After this year Ferentz will likely have averaged 6-7 losses per year for 4 years. Iowa could do better than that, and probably would if they hadn't given Ferentz the worst buyout in sports. You believe Iowa has averaged 6-7 losses per year because of a buyout? Being relevant on a national basis 1-2 times per decade is pretty much all Iowa can hope for, and they have gotten that out of Ferentz. They average 6.25 losses per year for a 4-year stretch in the mid 2000s. They averaged 8 losses per year during the period they moved from Hayden Fry to Ferentz. They averaged 7.8 losses during the 70s. Iowa cannot reasonably expect to do better than what they've done with Ferentz.
  15. You don't think so? 1700 pro touches, more than another 900 in college. He's right there with Ray Rice, and just about exactly where Shaun Alexander did when he fell apart.
  16. Yeah, that was really impressive. For some reason he also looked "bigger" to me on the field. Maybe Baltimore has some smaller offensive players (not just Ray Rice), or maybe he was just making more of an impact. The third option is that I was sitting closer to the TV.
  17. It's always that bad when they stupidly take the tarp off to play a game during what they know will be a huge storm. Had they just delayed the start and kept it covered until the worst passed they would have been fine. Don't think they could keep the tarp out no matter what during a tornado warning. They could have kept it on longer than they did and kept the players off until the storm passed. Instead they started it "on time" knowing there would be a delay. That led to pregame and 1st quarter activities ripping up the field and an impossible condition to return to.

  19. Wait... really? On the road, our D is running on fumes (something like eight injuries assuming Shea doesn't play), and and playing an offense that came up huge in their last outing.. It's also probably worth noting that the Bears are 2-8 against the line this year. People have been losing money on the Bears, which erodes the support they get and skews the line away from them.
  20. Dudes who build their own business can be just as, if not more, arrogant than people born with a silver spoon. Just look at Tom's dad. It probably should be noted that he wasn't born a billionaire, that business was tiny when they were little and grew into the behemoth it became while Tom was of working age.
  21. Pink hat guy!!!
  22. Does the fact that Florida is paying part of his salary effect the cap hit that the Hawks will have? I would have assumed that you assume the contract and the hit regardless of who is actually paying, but I could be wrong. Reports said Chicago is only paying half and taking half the hit. That might be the best part of the deal from Chicago's standpoint. Paying his full amount and taking that hit would be very bad.
  23. He also served as a VP of two other companies and co-founded a 3rd in between those two roles. That was certainly easier to do based on who daddy was.....He had connections far in advance of what the normal guy would have had. I'm not a fan of the apparent way in which the family acquired the team, but I don't think Tom or the rest of the kids are dolts. Didn't Tom go to Northwestern? I think they have a business model to maximize profit. He went to UofC, BA and MBA.
  24. You don't think this is helpful? Yeah, this team just needs veterans who provide leadership and deflect attention and pressure. That's all they need really.
