The funny thing is that the playoff spot and a 4-year reign in the central would be based on the rotation if you're looking at a track record of ML success rather than potential. And you are also assuming that there will be no money involve in a Hamels deals. So you're cutting into the market even further by upping the prospect haul? I don't know what that means.

What does running it by the Cubs have to do with it? If you are advocating for waiting until all free agents are taken then it doesn't matter if a trade gets "run by" the Cubs before going down.

You named one team. And that team has already tried trading for him, decided against it, and has plenty of financial resources. You really think they'd go against what they've already done just to get a guy early? It's not about getting a guy early. It's about getting a guy.

That is not a logical fallacy. The question is should the cubs do it if it is an option. Some seem to think they should not. Others think they should. No team is trading for Hamels when they can add a guy for just money. He's not getting dealt prior to those guys coming off the market. you are making huge assumptions about other teams' budgets.

off the top of my head the Dodgers could have him in a second. The Cubs could blow away any Dodgers offer. Not if they are scoffing at the notion of trading away prospects when there are all these free agents we can get with just money.

No, you just need to make less vague statements. He was pretty clearly arguing that *successfully* signing a Lester/Scherzer was preferable (to him) than trading for a Hamels. Obviously the free agents can choose not to come here. I didn't make a vague statement. It is a sentiment that has been expressed by many who are sick and tired of the "why don't we just keep waiting for a better opportunity" crowd.

That is so dumb. Way to cherry pick. Read the rest. Are you going to overpay for Hamels in our situation with all 3 of those guys still on the market? I didn't cherry pick. Your argument was incredibly dumb. There is no reason why you can't trade for one and sign another. But the fact is passing on trades because there are free agents who might be interested in you is a great way to end up with neither.

I don't get what the average-to-good eye versus extremely aggressive approach dichotomy is? He swings at pretty much everything, but he has a fairly normal balance between the times he swings at strikes and the times he swings at balls. Basically, he swings at both balls and strikes at an extremely high rate. so how does that equate to a good eye? If he swings at balls at an extremely high rate he does not have a good eye.

If your argument is that you can whiff on all your free agents, you didn't word it very well Apparently I have to spell it out for you. Just because it takes "only money" to get a free agent does not mean that the free agent will choose your money. If you make a trade, the trade is made and the player is yours. You can't simply write off the concept of trading for players just because you think there is a possibility you can be the one team another player chooses in free agency.
