    Agree. If he gets out there for a full season and doesn't fall flat on his face, 2.5 WAR is not a high target for him. He'd need three of those seasons for me to lose the bet.

    I was going to answer "kind of" to the question then your second point reminded me it's no more silly than all the rest. I'm not a baseball jersey fan, but I like the jersey T. If you want one there's probably nothing wrong with a Maddon. At least you know he's probably unlikely to get injured and miss a year or suddenly go into the tank right after you buy it.

Take your injury arguments elsewhere. I've long been in the minority (I think) by believing that diving could be (theoretically) slightly faster than running through the bag, but I know everyone has strong opinions on this. It feels like it could be, if done perfectly by a guy with the right body type who practices it regularly. But it also seems like it just happens willy nilly a lot of the time which negates the likelihood that the diver is doing it the optimal way. Also if you do it enough to make sure you are doing it the optimal way, that probably increases your chances of injury.

    *shrug* Annoying or not, it's accurate. Baseball being the reason for baseball results is usually about sixth on their list of explanations, after morality, chemistry, fate, character and clutchiness. I don't even think you realize you aren't saying anything.

Tim Kurkjian has made his entire career on the "oh geez guys isn't baseball just so weird and funny and odd and unique and baseball" There is more than enough of that silliness. The real solution to this is you need to stop listening to sports talk radio.

    Because people, and *especially* the media, are slaves to narrative. We want to impose narrative on everything because we don't like randomness as an explanation. "The Cubs are on an intermediate step in their ascent to greatness" is a narrative too good to resist. It's way preferable to "The Cubs are a baseball team who will play baseball games and maybe win a lot of them but who knows because baseball is weird." it's preferable because your story is dumb My story is more accurate than theirs. Writers being reluctant to predict the Cubs will be very good is far less annoying than "baseball is baseball so baseball will happen because baseball."
