    Because he didn't actually grab the facemask. He hits it on the way to grabbing his shoulder. The rule is you have to grab it and then either hold on or twist. That didn't happen. Several years ago, even incidental contact with the facemask was a penalty. That isn't true in the NFL anymore. I'm not surprised they made the call because it looks like a face mask in live speed action. It's an understandable call to be missed but it was missed. Unbelievable that they can't go to the replay for penalties like that. I understand not allowing regular holding calls to get reviewed, but a call like that, which isn't a judgement call at all, should be eligible for review. Also, I liked the old incidental facemask 5 yard penalty. The distinction is key IMO, but whatever. Yeah, the old 15 yarder required grabbing and twisting. Getting rid of the incidental just opened the door for more incidentals to be called 15. And you put your hand on the QBs helmet/facemask at any time and you can expect a call.

    You don't sign free agents in the pursuit of surplus value. Nor do you sign them to make sure they are on your team in 5-6 years. You sign them because you want a really good player to play for your team today.

This paragraph reminded me of all the crap the Ricketts family agreed to in the sale of the Cubs. Purposefully tying your hands behind your back* is not close to the same thing. *allegedly

    Yeah no. There's no point in arguing an obvious situation. It's an easy add to a contract if you are a team that is serious about adding really good pitchers today.

But in practice it never seems to work that way. The Red Sox didn't seem to get any appreciable discount for Price in exchange for that opt-out. That's ... just *so* wrong. You don't do it for the discount. You do it to get a guy without having to pay substantially more. Boston paid what everybody assumed, and not the $30m more than the market that was mentioned before. And they got him relatively early in the process.

    Yeah his style might be ok, but I cannot see him being a particularly effective recruiter (unless the system has immediate results and is attractive to recruits), or a leader of men given what we heard from the Bears locker room at the end of last season. Yes pros have a different mindset than college players but I mean how can you respect a coach that stood by as one of his players berated an assistant in front of everyone, and then the next day named him a captain? He could not handle professionals with big contracts. The children who participate in college football are different. He's a complete [expletive] artist too, which will help in recruiting. Look at the all the other Dbags in the business.

    I could see Trestman succeeding a bit in college. He's a gimmick coach who's personality does not mesh with pros.

    There is no distinction between 1 starters and 5 starters other than how they slot into their team's rotation.

    I mean, he lives in Nashville, which is where the Winter Meetings are. I thought it was a definite he'd sign during them. Why? You think he has a reason to line up his signing for marketing purposes at the GM meetings?

    To me, the overpay comes in the form of the opt-out after three years. He's the highest paid pitcher in history, it's probably tough to get much more money after that. I would not hesitate to give these guys opt outs. If I can get three years of a stud pitcher but he walks away for more money after, fine by me. Give me the three year of studliness for only money and I am all set.
