On his own. Nobody shoved him. If Davidson had balls he’d hold this against him but he already caved on Byram and probably has no nuts.

That’s a fascinating move I think somebody was going to do with Bedard before he got hurt. It makes a ton of sense. Chicago should do the same with Robertson. You’d be lucky to ever replicate the production of one star over 4 drafts. If you’re picking 15 every year you hope those guys can eat NHL minutes

Two non contact shoulder injuries. Bedards got a little Jack Hughes in him, wonder if they can get him on as team friendly of a second contract as Hughes.

I’ve hated the rebuild from day one. It’s a waste of years of fan money that isn’t going to work until they hit on outside help. If Bedard is happy with Byram and willing to sign they have a chance of one day making the playoffs but Davidson is going to have to switch gears in a big way before they will threaten to win a series or two. As for this offseason, unless they go after Robertson or some other big ticket item there really isn’t much worth adding in free agency. They need a RHD but probably somebody no better than Grelcyk as a 3rd pairing depth guy. They signed a couple penalty killer types to replace Murphy and Mikhayev. Kantserov, Lardis and Frondell are going to be counted on to fuel offensive improvement on the front end and they desperately need Byram to be who they think he is at the point.

Mason Marchment, 7th on the athletic free agent big board, is the highest rated guy to sign. Going to San Jose from Columbus winnipeg sign Skinner as a backup (or replacement) for Hallebuyck

Mikheyev signs 4 years under 4m aav. Hawks get a 4th line penalty killing forward Cole Smith for 3/3aav. also Ian Cole 1/4, who’s a LH penalty killing D. they have a plethora of LHD and only 2 RHD. Byram is probably going to be on his off hand.

Montreal extends Ivan Demidov to 8 year and 9.5m aav, another reminder of the missteps along the way in Davidsons plan. Arty’s inability to show signs of improvement is a major factor why they made such a bad trade and contract for Byram. Ivan would easily be the second best forward on the Blackhawks. see also Nico Hischier, a proven top 6 center and captain signing for fewer years and lower AAV than the unproven Byram.

12+ aav for a second pairing defenseman from a team that won one round of playoffs. Highest paid D in the league (for now). unbelievable asset management silliness by Kyle. have to assume Bedard soars past this number.

Sure they needed to take some steps. But it’s not just out of town people ripping the deal. This is such typical parochial BS from Chicago guys. The value transaction is just so way off. They gave up draft capital and D depth and now they are also forced to give #1 Dman money to a guy who has never shown an ability to be one. Byram could run the power play but you do not want him on the PK. He was the 4th option there in Buffalo and he’s going to be thrust into top 2 in Chicago where Connor Murphy and Louis Crevier are now gone after eating so much of that time. It could eventually work out but Davidson painted himself into this corner because he’s spent so much draft capital on guys who “should” be that #1 who are also nowhere close to it. He’s used 4 first round picks (three of them top ten) on D and they still have a need for more. They also still don’t have a legit top 6 forward grouping. They need Byram to do more than he’s ever done plus they need multiple forward prospects to take big leaps this season, or they will be right back to one of the teams hoping for lottery luck.

If Buffalo ends up dealing 4 for Knies or Stenberg drops there I’m gonna be furious. Rumors about Robertson and others are probably smoke but the trade he made does mean Davidson has to be more IN on the present day than ever. You can’t trade for and presumably sign a (we are praying) 1D and then not also try and get better up front. If he’s done stockpiling 1s, then go ahead and deal all three next year for something good. Sign Bedard, Byram and the new guy to big deals and you have your core, with a bunch of cheap talent around them for two years. Figure out who to keep later.

Waddell offered little insight in a news conference Thursday, but he confirmed that the Columbus future of Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Zach Werenski is very much up in the air. When asked pointedly whether Werenski has requested a trade, or has made it clear to the Blue Jackets that he doesn’t plan to stay with the club after his contract expires following the 2027-28 season, Waddell demurred. “I think, for right now, there are some matters we’re dealing with that should probably stay internal,” Waddell said. “My plan is still to meet with Zach in the near future and see where he’s at. “We’ve had conversations with his agent, but there’s been no definitive plan for sure.”
