  1. Much like the Iranian population wanting to rise up against their primitive leadership, I've heard about all these upgrades for quite some time, but there is still a huge lack of programming. I recently switched back to directv after they apologized for screwing up so much and driving me to cable, and I'm hoping for more. But so far it's extremely limited.
  2. NY Jets select Ryan Harris, OT from Notre Dame. The Jets are in the process of overhauling the offensive line, and with 3 fresh faces in the past two years, they are well on their way to establishing a consistently great line for Pennington and Jones to use to their advantage.
  3. Miller didn't have to.
  4. Neither has Miller. At least with Guzman there's a reasonable expectation that he will learn.
  5. Yes, but no one said it can't be after a month or so of pitching out of the pen and then some spot starts to stretch out. This would allow a pitcher to adjust to the hitting at this level while working closely with the pitching coach. Then when it looks like he's got it, you Nobody said you can't put him right into the rotation. Other teams do that all the time. Guzman has already faced major league hitters, about 60 innings worth. There's no reason to arbitrarily hold him back because you fear exposing him to starting. You should start your 5 best starters, and Guzman is easily in that group for the Cubs. I wouldn't say easily. What has Guzman done that he easily should be in the starting 5? Not be named Wade Miller or Jason Marquis.
  6. I agree, but then again look how the Twins developed Santana. Started him in the Pen, and gradually moved him into the staters role. I like Guzman in the long man right now. No reasons not to trust Lou and his coaches right now. There's a bunch of examples on both sides. Johan was 21 when he came up to the majors. And he had about 340 pro innings by then. By 25 he was a regular starter. Guzman is already 25 and has over 500 pro innings. They are at different stages of the development process.
  7. He should have had the job in the first place. It's not change for the sake of change. It's change for the sake of righting a wrong. Miller is unqualified for the job.

  9. baseball is a public transportation sport. If you can't wrap your head around taking a train, learn. that being said, I've driven to Wrigley some of the time and it's not nearly as hard as some people are making it out to be. No, you can't park in some 50 acre lot next to the park, but in places where you can, Yankee Stadium, Shea, Philly, it's a disaster getting into and out of the lots. Suburban stadiums are as bad as the cookie cutter nonsense from the 70's.
  10. part of the developmental process is starting in the majors leagues.
  11. no kidding. Impatient sons of guns. We're almost done with the 2nd round and we're still 2+ weeks away from the actual draft. It's not like everybody is logged into this site all day every day.
  12. Use your eyes? Where am I? Howry was as dominant as a set-up caliber pitcher gets last year. He didn't struggle to get outs. He wasn't flinging crap like Beck.
  13. It wouldn't have been a new development 3 years ago. But it would be today. no, not it's not. Okay, we'll just pretend like Floyd isn't a hobbled old man playing on his last legs coming off a terrible season in which he couldn't hold Murton's jock. I like the way you work.
  14. Howry was great last year and he may wind up being so this year but the early returns are bad. Yeah, he was great last year, far from iffy. But that's the problem when you sign aging middle relievers to longterm deals. They aren't the picture of stability. He struggles every time he pitches, including last year. It's only a matter of time before he gets rocked. A pitcher can look good on the stat sheet but use your eyes, it's obvious the guy struggles to get hitters out. Sure he can ride the dragon for a while, get the outs. But eventually it's going to come crashing down. this is just plain old nonsense.
  15. The starter pitched to a 4.50 ERA. The lineup had an OBP of about .270 and scored 3 measly runs. Yes, Howry had a bad outing as well. But the blame for the loss lies on many shoulders. A loss is more than just who was on the mound when the other team took the lead. Get over the "4.50 ERA." 6 IP with 3 ER is widely accepted as a Quality Start. His overall ERA is 2.77 Obviously, the team needed to score more runs. It was also Howry's job to make sure the opponents didn't score so that the home team had a chance. Widely accepted by baseball's conventional wisdom is hardly a quality defense of a cliche. 6 ip and 3 ER equates to a 4.50 ERA, and that is not good. It's not terrible, but it's hardly something to hang on when blaming others for a loss.
  16. It's also pretty crazy to be a Cubs fan, but we still do it.
  17. It wouldn't have been a new development 3 years ago. But it would be today.

  20. I agree, it's just frustrating. This could be the second loss directly attributed to bad bullpen pitching. The Cubs never had a lead in this game. You can't attribute a loss to the bullpen directly in a game when they went behind in the 1st inning and the offense did nothing against a crap pitcher. Yes I can. Lilly pitched well and so did Wuertz. The bottom line is Howry gave up the lead. There was no lead to give up. It's going to be a team loss if it happens. You can't assume victory as a starter when you pitch to a 4.50 ERA. You can't assume victory when you score 3 runs.

  22. So it seems as though Wuertz, Cotts and Dempster are the only reliable relievers so far this year. nature of the beast I guess. Better sign 'em all longterm.
  23. there's something screwy with my normal login (goony), so Tim had me create a new one. I was sick of that goofy name anyway.
  24. Theriot was already in the game, he came in with Wuertz. And welcome! that's what I get for talking to a client during the game. Yippee for tie games. oh, thanks for the welcome but I've been around a long time
