  1. I preferred Lou to Girardi without question. Girardi is a sac bunting fool of an old school manager who would have done nothing to get this team out of its offensive woes. I also never trusted him after he said he noticed something wrong with Lieber's delivery but didn't say anything until after the fact.
  2. I was living on the Upper West Side at the time and caught the WFAN update when I got home from work. I was absolutely sick. so was I
  3. I was against him. I think I may have started to hedge my bets as he became an obvious candidate and I heard him talk about walks/obp. I don't think managers make that much of a difference, especially not for the positives, the more they meddle, the tougher they make it for their team to win. But I've liked Lou quite a bit.
  4. the way God intended sunny skies highs around 60, compared to lows in the 40s at night. Probably for the best.
  5. Really? Who? McNabb beat them way back when, but that was a different team. They've been shredded by Delhomme and Griese late in games this year, not exactly mobile QBs. Eli, Peyton, Todd Collins, Kitna, and Romo are guys that hurt them in the recent past. Romo is the closest thing to a mobile guy there, and he beat them through the air. I don't think mobile QBs are that much of a problem for them.
  6. It makes some sense. You've got west coast teams involved, which means they should be a little later. Cubs fans are more than used to handling day baseball, and, people are going to tune in to Cubs games no matter when they air, and that may help keep an audience for later games. Even still, Chicago/NY not being featured in prime time seems really odd to me.
  7. What's with the 1.5 hour ranges? I find it hard to believe they will commit in advance to not showing the Cubs in prime time. Oh well, day baseball is fun.
  8. The fact that Lilly is likely to get you maybe 1 more out than Harden while giving up 2-3 more runs just makes it painfully obvious that Lilly should not start game 2. If he does, and the Cubs advance, that likely puts him in-line to get two starts in the NLCS, with Harden possibly only getting one. It's just nuts to even contemplate this issue. Paul worries that 5-6 innings out of Harden will force your pen to get overworked (in a series with 2 off days already built in and with plenty of time to rest up bullpen arms in advance) while Ted Lilly is the one who is actually a real risk to need to be pulled very early, as he lasted just 2 innings in his first September start, and has been unable to finish 5 innings on 6 occassions this year. I like Ted Lilly. His value to this team is obvious, and his improvement over the second half was clear. But Ted Lilly is nothing more than a nice middle rotation pitcher who can give you a fairly decent chunk of solid innings year-in and year-out, while Rich Harden is very clearly the most dominant starter on the staff.
  9. This is Paul Sullivan's take: I don't understand how anybody can justify saying Lilly deserves the 2nd start because he consistently goes 7, when his ERA is over 4, he actually averages barely over 6 innings, he's given up 4 ER and 5 ER in two of his 4 September starts, and you have Rich Harden. Harden has given up 4 ER once as a Cub, and only twice this season. He's thrown 7 innings 4 times as a Cub and is averaging nearly as many innings per outing as Lilly, at 5.9. Essentially, Lilly gets you one more out, on average, per start (actually less as he averages just 0.1 more innings per game). This is just completely illogical. You have off days galore, and bullpens will be rested. If Harden throws in game 2, then there is an off day immediately following. Harden is far and away the team's most effective starter, while Ted Lilly is clearly number 4. This should not even be a discussion.
  10. WFAN in NY was regularly cutting into WGN radio that summer, mostly for Sammy's at bats. I was at my friend's parents house in New Jersey hanging out at the pool listening to 660 for updates and heard it live. They replayed Santo's call dozens of times laughing the whole time. It was Mike and the Mad Dog.
  11. Very true. The Cubs should not go beyond the first year of arbitration with him, if they go that long. He turns 29 this year and I believe next season is his last on the cheap. There's no reason to pay him a million or more in 2010 when he's in his 30's and unlikely to maintain his singles influenced OBP.
  12. I expect my lineup will be something like this: Pre-game 2 beers 1st inning 1 beer 2nd inning 1 beer 3rd inning 1 beer 1 hot dog 4th inning 1 beer 5th inning 1 beer 1 food item TBD 6th inning 2 beers 7th inning 2 beers hopefully carrying me over to the 8th and 9th. I love it when a plan comes together.
  13. If that's true then why did they modify their rotation for the rest of the regular season to be: Marquis Marshall Zambrano Harden Dempster Lilly Marquis/Marshall I think that's right and I have no idea why Phil Rogers thinks that's setting up to be Dempster in Game 1. If he has inside information, great. But if he's using that order to read the tea leaves, doesn't it suggest Z/Harden/Dempster/Lilly? Lou has talked about getting Zambrano a lot of work between now and the playoffs, since he hasn't pitched much. He's insinuated that Zambrano will not pitch game 1 becauase of his lack of innings in September and his inconsistency. This rotation would allow Zambrano to throw a simulated game or other workout on the Monday after the season and then pitch game 3 on somewhat "normal" rest. If Dempster throws Friday, then his normal rest would have him pitching Wednesday, Game 1.
  14. As a reliever. Dempster 2008 has been nothing like Dempster 2007. I want it to be Harden, Dempster, Zambrano, Lilly, Harden. But Dempster 1 and 5 is the 2nd best option.
  15. exactly. Lou is saying the right thing, but will do the right thing for the Cubs. That's how I take it. He's got to keep playing the regulars while giving them occasional rest. He can't just sit Soriano, Ramirez and Lee for a week.
  16. I could see them going 10 pitchers for the World Series to take an extra batter for the DH position. I think they'd be more willing to go with 10 in a short series than a 7-gamer.
  17. The yards and points were more than adequate, but let's not ignore the scoring opportunites they failed to capitalize on in the 1st half. I'm not. They definitely should have done more. But a team that pretty much ignored offense and spent all their money on defense needs to get a better showing from that defense.
  18. That MLB logo on the hat they wore the other day completely ruins what is otherwise a decent hat. Why put it right in the middle of the bill?
  19. I've got a dumb question. can that be formatted to get on your ipod?
  20. Yeah, it's probably a lot more about regressing to the mean than just getting tired. But you still pretty much have to go with him in the playoffs, so rest him up now and hope he can have a few solid PA in the playoffs.
  21. There was a meeting with an arbitrator on Sept. 10th... but from what I understand, there was too much material to be covered in one day, and they were going to work on getting another date scheduled... which could take weeks. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3602002

  23. The Ed Hochuli mistake is barely a week old. And the hurricane weekend was also only a week ago. You're right. It's about the same time frame for both incidents. One of them they are saying "time to move on" the other one they're still passing out pity. I'm just saying, it's time to move on for both things. What I don't get is why they are giving the Astros a free pass for staying in Houston. They weren't forced to stay in Houston. Greenberg isn't even raising the point that they could have played the three games on normal rest in a neutral site if they were just not idiots about staying in Houston and trying to play there.
  24. I expect them to not defend and excuse the actions. The Bears have shot themselves in the foot with personal foul penalties throughout the Lovie era (or maybe more appropriately, the Kreutz era). I would be upset with them if they said Tillman cost the game, but they can acknowledge it was a mistake that shouldn't happen, while at the same time accepting responsibility for the loss across the board.
  25. I'm with you on the first point, but not the second. Theriot is the starting SS and one of only two SS on the roster.
