  1. I'm hoping they keep Lilly, Wells and Dempster on normal rest and they pitch Friday, Saturday Sunday. Let Harden have 7 days rest and pitch in one of the Sunday games, and be prepared to keep Marshall rested to possibly eat some innigs, plus Hart if he's still around. And I wouldn't be upset if Zambrano threw an inning or two on Sunday. Even though it would be short rest, it would only be one day short, a very short outing, and the ASB would allow him to rest again. Lilly is probably going to see ASG action, and if he pitches Friday that leaves him Saturday, Sunday, Monday to rest for it. They've done a horrible job of following through on the strategy from last year of resting Harden more than normal.
  2. The stories I've seen make it seem like a fairly open affair.
  3. They've busted others for clerical mistakes. The NFL busted the Bears on a clerical mistake. It's a simple procedure that everybody gets right most of the time. Why did these idiots send this in normal mail? Is that where they are cutting costs?
  4. How does he do that? By hitting singles off the wall, and turning doubles into singles because he doesn't run hard? I know that you can create runs by being a good base runner, but I don't think Fonzie is the greatest base runner around... Team runs are extremely important. Individual runs, though, do not show anything about a player's skill that his other stats don't tell us. It's a fairly pointless stat as far as grading a player, IMHO. Who cares if he's a good base runner when he's hitting doubles off the wall constantly? That was his point. And again, you're oversimplifying that they mean by runs. Isn't saying he constantly bangs doubles off the wall oversimplifying things? Or lying.
  5. Like I said, I'd be fine with waiting a bit. I don't think we should be desperate at this point. But, it's highly unlikely Ricketts will be able to get the sale completed, give Hendry the ok and then Hendry work out a good deal all in the span of a month. I'd love it if that happened, but that would be a complete change from the pace the sale has taken the past 2 years. The pace of the sale is going to stop instantaneously once an agreement is signed. Hendry does not need more than a day to make a trade. He could already be in contact with Jim saying that once it gets to a certain stage, Hendry has the authorization to make a move. Maybe the sale doesn't go through until next year, maybe it's done tomorrow.
  6. Edit. Jeff, do you know when they start counting the 90 days that a Rule 5 player has to be on the roster? Is it when rosters have to be sent in or the first day of the season? Either way, if they wanted to DL Patton, within a few days from now they could do that and already have satisfied the entire length of time of the Rule 5 stipulations. They could DL him until early August, then send him on a rehab assignment until September 1st, and then bring him back up when rosters expand and have no problems. It's 90 days active right? Wouldn't that be opening day?
  7. That's not at all what I see. He said they toyed with it in May, and he'll check back again now. Odds are, if they stuck with him through June, they will stick with him for as long as they need. That fact that they considered it earlier in the year means the possibility exists. How likely it is, however, I don't know. I can understand what he's saying though. At the time that they considered it, Patton had pitched very badly and they still had to keep him on the roster for another 4 1/2 months. Now Patton is coming off a month where he pitched well and they have only 3 months left to keep him. They're much less likely to want to get rid of him now. Yeah, I can understand it. Now, however, they like Blanco, Fox has hit well, they may like Fuld and they acquired Baker. There's a chance that the roster will have enough bats to Hendry's liking that he may decide to parts ways with Patton. I still think the insistence on having a 12 man staff is going to make that unlikely. It would have to be a situation where they aren't getting innings out of the rest of the staff and feel forced to move him, rather than the desire to keep another position player.
  8. Even if all he cares about is himself (which there really isn't any evidence to support) that is all that matter, because the only thing he can do to help the team is to have personal success. He doesn't need to block for another hitter or pass the ball either.
  9. It was a no brainer to not sign Miles, but they did, so that's not a realistic option.
  10. That's not at all what I see. He said they toyed with it in May, and he'll check back again now. Odds are, if they stuck with him through June, they will stick with him for as long as they need.
  11. So, when Ramirez returns, does Fox or Blanco go down? I assume when Johnson returns Fuld goes down. How about Miles? Fox, Blanco or Patton?
  12. Milton Bradley has acted like he cares, and he's sucked. Soriano has acted exactly like he's always acted, and he's been terrible. You can't fake baseball playing ability with emotion.
  13. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4301461 http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/allan_muir/07/01/hossa.blackhawks/index.html ESPN's people seem to believe the deal is pretty good. CNNSI's does not. The SI guy seems focused on the length, and the situations with Toews, Kane and Keith. From what I can tell, the length works out great by reducing the cap hit, which basically makes it easier to resign those guys. They were never going to just be a team led by those three. They had to have other impact players. A top notch winger at a $5.2m cap hit is very beneficial. When you compare it to Patrick Sharp at 3.9, I'd say the Hossa hit is much more fair, for what he brings to the table. And the length thing isn't that big of a deal. I don't see him playing 12 years. There will be incentive for him to retire toward the end. But if he doesn't, they will have flexibility to do stuff with him. If he was making $7m per year for the life, yes, that would be an issue, but he's not.
  14. That is not at all the likelihood. 10 more days is much more likely to help than not help. It's 10 more days, but only 6 more games. They are going to cut short potential rehab time by a week and a half just to get him in 4 or 5 more games.
  15. Right, but the more time he has, the more rehab he can do, the more strength he can build. If the Cubs were over .500, not hitting like a girls softball team, and not about to face the Cardinals, I do not think he would be back until after the ASB. I think this decision is being made based on things other than what is best for the return of Aramis Ramirez.
  16. The sales talks have reportedly heated up the past couple weeks, Ricketts may be able to give Hendry the green light in a couple weeks.
  17. I'd think it would improve things, probably not fix them entirely, but make them better. The point is he could get 10 more days of rest but only miss 6 games. You'd have to imagine he's going to get a few of those days off anyway, so you are eliminating 10 more days of rehab to maybe get him into 4 or 5 more games. I don't think they make that decision if they are a game back, which says to me that it's the wrong decision.
  18. The question is, what good offensive bat can we get this year? Especially if the Baker trade confirms that Hendry is committed to Fontenot at second base? There have been several names mentioned in threads/posts, some that realistically might be had in a trade that involved Wells. The Pirates have always been a good trade partner w/the Cubs and are already selling off pieces. F. Sanchez would be a good/smart target. The problem with acquiring a second baseman, though, is that Hendry appears to be committed to Fontenot at second base. Just because Hendry is committed to something doesn't mean it's the right decision. Regardless, they have a month before the trading deadline, maybe he's committed to it until then. There's no reason to sell off what limited resources you have for another reliever when in a month you may regret not having those resources for something that will actually have a significant impact.
  19. The quotes were regarding him taking BP during the Detroit series that has already happened. It sounds like they were considering rushing him back then - but didn't. I haven't heard him say anything about Monday's date.
  20. Vitters moving quickly and Ramirez exercising his opt out clause could make it happen. I'm not sure if you would qualify Ramirez declining his option as a disaster though. I forgot the Ramirez option was for 2011. I still think it would be very bad if that happens and Vitters is rushed to the majors.
  21. Seems like more of a Miles replacement, honestly. Fontenot can't hit LHs, Blanco doesn't hit anyone well, and Miles can't stay healthy or hit well. At least Baker can hit LHs But Miles isn't on the roster. I guess Freel could be cut.
  22. Which is why I was shocked the last hitter that inning watched a fastball down the middle for strike three after Wells shook off Soto 3 times. You could see how amped up he was (although the call is what set him off, not Lou) and that's when you have to expect a guy trying to get cocky with his fastball.
  23. Ramirez's quotes certainly sound like he's rushing back before he's healed and that more time could have helped.
  24. Looked like a half-assed "explosion" from Lou to me. Randy Wells showed more fire when he said, "are you ******* kidding me?!?!" The whole time Lou was out there I was thinking of him saying, "HEY MAN PEOPLE ARE GETTING ON ME FOR NOT SHOWING FIRE CAN YOU PLEASE TOSS ME SOON SO WE CAN PRETEND THAT SORT OF THING WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH HOW MUCH EFFORT OUR PLAYERS GIVE AND BE THE THING THAT TURNS US AROUND. OKAY THANKS VERY MUCH I'M GOING TO GET MY HAT NOW AND GO TAKE MY BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICINE BECAUSE I'M GETTING TO OLD FOR THIS $#!&!!!
