  1. Not if he wanted to avoid overpaying mediocre free agents and save that money for when his own guy hit the market.
  2. What evidence is there they cannot? I don't see why SD can't sign him longterm. Maybe they would rather not and ultimately will not, but there's no reason they can't. Because Moorad bought the team in January of '09 and has shown no signs of being eager to raise payroll? How does this prove they cannot commit to a higher payroll. As I said, they may choose not to, but more likely than not they can. There's been no good reason for them to up their payroll in his first year of ownership, but as the team's biggest draw approaches free agency, perhaps they will see fit.
  3. Other than what their contracts are and what they would otherwise get on the free agent market.

  5. I think you would be surprised. They would not get $37m this offseason. Mainly because they'd command long term deals. In a hypothetical where we're able to look at it year to year? Sure they would. There is no point in such a hypothetical.
  6. It is a dumb thing to say, but no different then when Lou got kicked out of the game a few years ago and the Cubs went on a huge run. The media and all the fans were saying Lou getting upset light a fire under the Cubs, but it had more to do with the Cubs being more talented then any team in the Central Division that year. No, not all the fans.
  7. Holy understatements Batman. :D It might help if he actually played, but it's not that much of an understatement.
  8. What market is this? I can't see Fukudome, Soriano and Byrd getting anything close to $37 million combined on the free agent market. The Cubs have gotten about 10 WAR so far this season from their outfield, Soriano, Fukudome, Byrd, and Colvin. Nady's there too but he's a small negative so it's irrelevant. The market value of a win has been a little over 4 million, so when you figure how much they add the remaining 1/4 of the season, it probably balances out the regression for next year. The main moral of the story here is that Soriano has been better than people give him credit for, and Byrd has been awesome this year. I understand the reasoning, but I think it's pretty safe to assume GM's aren't pricing free agents based on WAR. And I bet there are teams spending a lot less money to get 10 WAR from their outfield this year. So while statistically we may not be overpaying, I still think, realistically, the outfield is extremely overpriced. With the way the free agent market is today, I can't see our outfield being worth more than $20 million. I think you would be surprised. They would not get $37m this offseason.
  9. Mentions Jay and Jeff, that's it.
  10. I still can't believe this. Big credit to Wilken and the minor league instructors on this one. Wasn't the big drawback with him that he just swings and misses so much. Did he have to learn strikezone judgement?
  11. The biggest showdowns between Dusty Baker teams and the Cardinals were the '02 playoffs. (Dusty won), the '03 stretch run (Dusty won), and now this year. Maybe LaRussa should stop being such a hotheaded prick and his team would stop following suit The Cardinals are going to win the division because Brandon Phillips made them angry?? They're not the Hulk My goodness that was easy. What a stupid storyline.
  12. Are you saying the OF is cheap? They have more than $37m dedicated to next year's OF, if they dump Fukudome but pay a chunk of his salary and sign a cheap platoon guy they could go even higher. That's pretty expensive for a non special OF.
  13. Would appear to be, but doesn't seem like something that needed to be teased with a breakingnews story.
  14. That's a tough call. The 2006 team probably had more god awful players, but they also had prime or near prime Zambrano, Lee and Ramirez plus some other useful players. They had a questionable pitching staff but a number of quality arms, some of which disappeared or changed roles. And of course they also had a nearly unprecedented ability to take on more payroll in that offseason. So the quality of the roster was probably overall a little worse, but with a much better position to add to the team.
  15. http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/08/source-bears-have-roster-move-coming.html Kind of a weird blurb about an expected roster move by the Bears with pretty much no indication what it is going to be.
  16. [expletive] HE SHOULD BE GONE!!!
  17. But they are a bunch of whiny little bitches and have been for years.
  18. Yeah, but they were lucky that was such a weak division with 4 sub .500 teams. They were still just an 85 win team, barely better than the 2009 "disaster" that everybody hated.
  19. Oh I don't doubt that for a second. My guess is something like adding a veteran reliever, getting rid of Zambrano and Fukudome, resigning Lilly, and then finding a platoon partner for Hoffpauir at 1st.
  20. depending on how he defines "solid moves" he's not necessarily wrong.
  21. I'm so pissed about the scheduling of the NY games. Any other week and I would have gone to that one, and anything other than Christmas and I would have gone to the Jets game in Chicago.
  22. I didn't think this article said anything.
  23. I was wondering as well and that didn't even come to mind.
