    But 7-9 would really suck. would it? How would it not? No playoffs for 4th straight year. Possibly not bad enough to get some much needed change in management/coaching. Could easily lead to the deterioration of the Jay Cutler era before it gets a chance to get off the ground. Absolutely no step forward. It might not be surprising, but it would really suck.

    Even if he's a 5/6 round pick he's probably much better off with baseball. Yes, it takes you longer to make the big team in baseball. If all he wants to do is step on a pro sports field in uniform, football is probably the best way. Just play some special teams for a couple year and maybe catch a couple balls. But when he's 33 he's probably got very little chance of being paid to play football and could have a good chance of at least being paid by somebody to play baseball.

    Well here we go again on the Lovie train. Bears are favored by 6 in their week 1 matchup against the Lions despite a pathetic preseason. That's a lot of points, the third most among week 1 games. I do not feel at all comfortable giving those points, just like I do not feel at all comfortable counting on the Bears making the playoffs this year. There's no excuse to come up short this year, three full seasons removed from their super bowl run with plenty of money made available to acquire talent.

    I don't think any of these things really qualify as douchey, that word gets thrown around for an awful lot of stuff nowadays. But while what Ted Lilly did was stupid, the play was over when the bat made contact. Wasn't the play still going on with the Nyjer one?

    I can't see any team giving anything of any value for Shark. They'd take him for a PTBNL, but I can't imagine any more than that. And I think a team out there looking to make a splash might take Soriano and his contract if we gave him away for nothing – not likely, but possible. We could definitely trade Soriano if we took back another bad contract (Vernon Wells, for instance). So both are tradeable, but not in trades that would help the Cubs. Shark could probably easily be added to a package for something of use, and if they had kept him in the minors would have been for something even better. His no trade was unprecedented and stupid. The theory that the Cubs might not have wanted to trade him is besides the point.

    I agree, it's very dumb. I'm guessing if none of that happened before, then the SBs would have been viewed as annoying, but they wouldn't throw at him again. I'm guessing that was the final straw, like when spouses fight about the dishes but it has very little to do with the actual dishes.

    The part that's in common with Soriano is that I don't think, at this point, that either Shark or Soriano would be tradeable assets without the NTC. Why they're not tradeable is different, but the fact that they aren't tradeable is similar. Except it's not. Soriano isn't tradable because nobody can afford him. People might be willing to take a chance on Samardzija, but they can't unless the Cubs deny his option and let him go to free agency.

    '09 Sanchez: 53.8% completion, 6.7 yards/attempt, 0.6 TD/INT ratio, 10 fumbles '08 Jamarcus Russell: 53.8% completion, 6.6 yards/attempt, 1.6 TD/INT, 12 fumbles Yeah, he sucked. The only times he didn't suck was when he was handing off. He threw a handful of nice passes, but anybody who can get an NFL job can do that on occasion.

    According to Wes Helms, Morgan stealing those bases means that Morgan doesn't "play the game right or play for the integrity of the game". Wes Helms is apparently an idiot. I think they were pissed about the stuff that led up to that.

    I think it's a bump regardless, but it's a sensible one at least.

    The Samardzija one, maybe. Had they let him work up the minors instead of yoyoing him between the major league pen and minor league rotation, he could have been a fairly valuable trade chip by now. I think Shark is kind of in with Soriano as far as his NTC goes, with the way they handled him the NTC is irrelevant because nobody will want him. Had they handled him better, they may not have any interest in trading him. That is in no way in common with Soriano.

    I don't see a problem with saying that something that was allowed in 2009 is no longer allowed going forward. What they can't do is actually tear up the contracts.

    I have a tough time thinking they can get a 2nd rounder for him right now, unless there's a team desperate for TE help that I'm not aware of. If you can't get at least a three there is no reason to deal him now. See if you can get some production out of him this year and if you're settling for a 4th or later, do it next spring.

    Was it really the stolen bases that set off the second attempt? That's dumb. Some of the announcers were saying they knew this was going to happen. I could understand if the team that was leading was stealing bases, but if you are up big, why do you care if the other team is stealing a base?

    They were losing by 10 and lost by 6? Cubs fans would call that a fake rally, not a fairly close game. The closest they got was within 5.

    Yeah, with Hendry as GM still there's no reason to care about who the manager is. It really doesn't matter. The only appealing option is getting a new GM. I agree it's clearly time for him to go, but I'd like the best managerial candidate brought in regardless. That would only prolong Hendry's employment. I fear Ricketts has a very "typical fan" attitude about baseball, focusing more on managers and their in-game decisions plus "blaming the players" when they don't come through instead of looking deeper at the guy who acquired those players.

    Yeah, with Hendry as GM still there's no reason to care about who the manager is. It really doesn't matter. The only appealing option is getting a new GM.
