  1. i know you're just trolling but that's not true at all. there are a couple things illinois does better, and basketball is one of them. Illinois has had its moments, but it's not like they are some behemoth. I've said since the time I was in college that if I had it all over again I'd go to Stanford in a heartbeat. If somebody has an opportunity they should go there, especially over Champaign.
  2. in everything
  3. Picking Stanford over Illinois is always the right decision.

  5. Do you think that MLB owners are willing to do what it takes to get a hard salary cap? For example the NHL had to take a whole season off. I think the owners would have to be in agreement that this is what they are willing to do to get the cap. I honestly don't see them all staying the course on this. They will also have to do things like allow guys to reach free agency earlier. The 6 years of service time and arbitration process is very beneficial to small market teams who can keep teams together or mostly together for a long time. People reaching free agency in their late 20's and early 30's means that when big market teams sign players they are almost guaranteed to be paying for some of the worst years of their careers. It is a built in punishment. If the Yankees can now sign a bunch of 26 year olds instead of 28, they are going to be getting all the best players' best years.
  6. http://deadspin.com/5674739/what-we-have-learned-about-brian-wilson-and-the-machine There's some crazy stuff going on in San Francisco.
  7. It does seem to me that every writer has them doing great this year, which is why it's suspicious that Vegas has such a low over/under. It's as if they are begging people to take the over.
  8. Then you wouldn't be shocked if they won less than 50. No, that is just the over/under that I would set it up at, indicating that I think half the people betting would pick over and half would pick under. Id obviously bet on the over. I'm more optimistic than most. But if Vegas has it at 46.5 why would you set it up higher? They are probably better at setting those things. And Chicago fans are notorious for over aggressive betting on their teams.
  9. I'm going to a Halloween party at an apartment with cablevision this Saturday, so no game three for me. Any good football games on that night?
  10. That has already happened. Attendance was only down about 100,000 this year (and roughly 650 people per game). That followed a roughly 130,000 decrease from 2008-2009. Attendance has been down all around baseball though, so I wonder how much the decline varies from the rest of the league. They were still 4th in the NL, which is where they almost always are. Tickets sold in February based on people hoping they'd bounce back from an 83 win season and actually contend isn't the same as how many people actually showed up to games and spent money on beer, food and merchandise.
  11. That has already happened.
  12. There's all kinds of bench coaches that went on to manage. Girardi was Torre's bench coach before Florida hired him. Ozzie Guillen was a coach, not sure if it was bench coach or base coach. Willie Randolph went from bench coach to his first manager gig. For a long time there was a stigma attached to longtime minor league managers that they didn't have any major league experience. I think teams value time served on a major league coaching staff.
  13. Some people have speculated they never took Ryno seriously and just put him in the minors because they thought he would never carry through on that. But I don't buy it. They wouldn't have promoted him all the way up that quickly if they really thought he was a worthless candidate. My guess is they really just don't want him being a distraction.
  14. Wow, top 5? Really? There are 10 teams with 2 wins or less and another 5 with 3 wins or less. Dallas faces 3 of those teams the rest of the year, plus a bunch of other mediocre and/or injury depleted teams. I would think only the Giants and Colts games are really scary. The league, and especially the NFC, is filled with mediocre teams. I think Dallas stands as good of a chance of picking outside the top 10 than in the top 5. Dallas will be playing the next 6-8 weeks with Kitna at QB. We may beat Jacksonville, but then I can't see us beating the Giants or Packers with Kitna. So, assuming a win against the Jags, losses to Giants and Packers...then maybe a win at home against Detroit, losses to New Orleans, Indianapolis, and Philly...if Romo returns after missing 7 games, we would be 3-10 with three games to play. Those three games would be Philly, Washington, and Arizona. Is 4-12 bad enough for a top five pick? I don't know, but it's surely likely. It's not like they were playing with Peyton Manning before.
  15. I'm taking 16 home games away from everybody? Are you sure? No?
  16. I don't know anything about basketball I've just been surprised with how much love they've received despite completely failing to get what they planned on getting this offseason. Boozer seems like a terrible fallback option. But then again I was thinking people had them winning 48-49 games. They don't get to feast on their own division do they? They play Miami and Boston as much as Cleveland and Detroit?
  17. except he scored a touchdown on that play so good for you
  18. I thought with all the love they were getting that would be a little higher. Still would probably take the under.
  19. What's their over/under for wins this year?
  20. I believe what he said was that he considered bench coach an unnecessary step after being a AAA manager. I'm not sure he ever said he wouldn't take such a job. But that may still be the case regardless. Of course, what job he was willing to take in August is probably going to differ from what job he would take in November if no managerial gig is open. I'd rather be a major league bench coach than AAA manager.
  21. You are taking 16 home games away from everybody. You are taking numerous "high value games" away from many teams. Boston/NYY go from playing 18 games to 6, Tampa hosts the Yankees 3 times instead of 9. This is all just incredibly unrealistic and impossible to make work. You can't force San Fran to play Washington as often as they play the Dodgers. Baseball is a business built on getting butts in seats for 6 months. This plan would kill the business model.
  22. I don't really understand what the heck this means. What makes it obsolete? It's not a piece of technology. It's 162 games because they want to get the most revenue they can out of a season, not because there is an optimal number of games needed to be played to determine the proper champions. When there were only two teams in the playoffs (AL and NL champs), a long season (154 or 162) made sense to determine who truly were the best teams in each league. Now more teams get in the playoffs and the 162 game schedule could be reduced and still get the same result of the top 4, 5, or 6 teams in each league getting in the playoffs. I'm not denying 162 is used because it's more gates and revenue but in terms of determining the best teams, it is not needed. What do you mean, "needed". If the season ended 10 games earlier this year the NL representative to the World Series wouldn't have made the playoffs. For the bulk of the time where only the two best made it, there was only 154 games and for only a brief period did they play 162 and only take 2 best. There are a lot more teams now than when they did it that way.

  24. I know in theory this is true, but is it a realistic concern? Managers and bench coaches aren't like QBs and backup QBs. My guess is this wouldn't actually happen that way, but the fear of it would prevent them from hiring him anyway. I'd agree if it was someone with a name that was hired. But, not to be dimissive of him...but Mike Quade is pretty much a nobody to the mainstream fans (and media), he only signed a 2 year deal, isn't making much, and if he were to be fired mid-season, there'd be nobody (or very few) that would have some serious attachment to the guy and cry for him to stay. I just think with Ryno as the bench coach, and Joe Anonymous as manager, it'd be a bad situation. Well, I guess you'll always have people complaining about it. Hell, the past couple years there were loads of fire Lou and let Trammel have the job comments, but it really doesn't resonate. I just think the Cubs have enough hated players, Ramirez, Fukudome, Soriano, Zambrano, kind of Dempster, whoever is pitching in relief, that this is where most of the vitriol will be focused regardless of coaching staff. I think Ryno could easily diffuse any such talk if it did get loud and I would bet he would in the interest of looking like the good guy.
