  1. I love that you are responding to abuck's post.
  2. He was the best option in the organization, there was a decent chance that was what he was going to end up being eventually anyway, it got his arbitration clock started earlier and the team needed pitching help in the majors. It was not the ideal usage for the guy, but he hasn't been ruined or had his career destroyed.
  3. That sure worked out well last year. Cashner's already in there due to necessity, and his career is probably ruined because of it. Can't wait to see Jay Jackson and Chris Archer warming up in the 6th and 7th next year. I'd hardly say a career is ruined by going to the bullpen. Maybe he will never be a 220 inning $20m ace, but there odds weren't all that great of it happening in the first place. You can have a great career in the bullpen, whether you stay there forever or move out of it eventually. Are the odds that much greater of him turning into a 70 inning 10M reliever that it's worth abandoning his starting for no reason? I don't know. But there is a reason so that's a moot point.

  5. One of the reasons why I really don't have a huge problem with Cashner in the bullpen.
  6. It's only a month, which is a lot less than basketball and hockey and the same as football. It's no different than NCAA basketball. Games are being played nearly every day. They put them out there on days that are best for ratings. Starting a game around 8:15 eastern isn't that big of a deal unless you are talking about epic Red Sox/Yankees games, but people still watch those. I still think they should go to that play-in format with 2 wild cards and the 1 seeds getting a bigger benefit. We have had only one knockout games in these playoffs so far which is where all the excitement is. But given the 8 team format I don't think they could do it better. Earlier would be better. Don't argue with me on this; I will destroy you. Maybe a little earlier. But if you start at 6 half the country is still at work or commuting as the game starts. Even if you go to 745 that is 445 out west. 8pm is not that late. East coasters are used to a primetime TV schedule that lasts through 11pm and midnight is not that late. It's really just the Red Sox/Yankees 5 hour abortions that suck the life out of watching them.
  7. I meant the pitching as a whole, including the bullpen. Regardless of how much luck is involved in bullpen success, we can't just keep on relying on the "plethora of arms throughout" the system, because most of them either walk too many people or are too hittable. I don't want to waste what little money we have on "veteran" relievers, but Hendry needs to get a little more creative. Do what Kenny Williams does and go get some guys for cheap with real talent. People like Justin Berg don't belong on a major league roster, particularly one that wants to contend. It won't be that hard to avoid needing guys like Justin Berg.
  8. Oh yeah, he also plays for the Sharks. Yeah this is the big one for me. Yeah, the other stuff just makes it a little easier. But I'm definitely rooting for Atlanta in the east, because of Buff and Ladd. Anybody else find it odd that the Blackhawks and Penguins have played 7 games already and there are 8 teams who have only played 4 games? It's not just a matter of the European trips either. And it's not about to be reconsiled quickly as Chicago plays 3 times in th next 4 days while Pittsburgh plays twice.
  9. You are including free falling Cardinals and Padres teams there?
  10. But thanks to the freaking basketball announcer for letting us know Bartman's place in history will stand a couple innings later. Well I was talking about the HR that people had a page long freak out about in this thread. I know, and I was talking about the other discussed potential fan interference situation.

  12. I know this is popular sentiment but there is really no reason this team can't contend for the division in 2011. There's a lot to be done. They're not particularly good at anything, besides quality starts. There's a lot to be done to make this a really good team, but you don't have to be really good to win the NL Central. The 2008 Cubs are the only team in the division over the past five years to win more than 91 games, and 2 out of those 5 took 85 or less. There isn't an early 2000's Cardinals juggernaut to contend with. This team could make one or two moves and get just a little bit of luck and win 85-89 and be in contention for the division. The Giants weren't all that special this year but they are poised to knock out the dominant Phillies. Without the Yankees or Red Sox in their league, let alone division, anything can happen. The Cubs should be doing what the Phillies have been doing the past 8 years, finishing over .500 every season, winning 90+ and the division with regularity and representing the NL in multiple WS. But before that happens, they can still contend.
  13. He thought he could trade Khabi after the signing, which was wrong. But the bigger problem was him allocating that much money to any one goalie in the first place. Unless you are talking about the elite of the elite goalies, you should not pay them nearly that much money. Khabi got too much as well.
  14. Well, the Monday night's match-up between the Cliff Lee led Rangers and the Yankees in New York was outdrawn by a terrible Monday Night Football game between Tennessee and Jacksonville. I can imagine MLB is dying for the Yankees to make the World Series. Just to contrast with their own stupidity. MLB's handling of the scheduling of the postseason is just laughably bad. What do you think they are doing wrong? Given the 8 team layout they work with, I'm not sure they could do any better.

  16. I was curious since I didn't watch much after Lou left and the offensive numbers were worse after Quade took over. The stuff sounds good that Levine talked about, I'm not sure how much it had to do with us improving, though. It didn't. They beat a couple more crappy teams late in the season. Big deal. It's not like they were beating SF, PHI or hell, even CIN. They played no better.
  17. I know this is popular sentiment but there is really no reason this team can't contend for the division in 2011.
  18. I think Huet was the bigger reach. At least Campbell is a proven top flight defenseman. When they got Huet he wasn't even a starter, and had very little starting time on his resume. They spent big on goalie and with Khabi still here were spending far too much. Remember, Tallon is the one who signed Hossa as well. He also previously spent big on Khabi, Aucoin and Lapointe. Campbell and Hossa may have been the biggest deals in terms of money, but those other guys were bigger mistakes.
  19. Go Rangers. There's no denying the change in mood in October when the Yankees are playing. People do get into it. But there's nothing quite as enjoyable as the depressing morning after a depressing Yankees loss.
  20. I'm not seeing the same level of play as last year. I think the difference in level of play between playoff hockey and October hockey is so high it's nearly impossible to compare level of play this year with last year. I really don't remember what it looked like to watch the first games of last season, other than being mildly unimpressed. I feel like it wasn't until November that they really started to look impressive.
  21. I would argue they aren't really missing anybody, with the exception of Brian Campbell.
  22. Geez, he hasn't even been there that long has he? Little quit pretty quickly and then Torre quit after a couple years too, right?
  23. Doug Melvin's going on at least 4. Just looked it up, he's actually only hiring his 3rd this offseason. He was hiring in October 2002, he hired Yost for 2003, then Yost was famously fired in September 2008 and replaced by Dale Sveum. But he was only an interim manager, and to me that doesn't count because it doesn't go against his GM track record. Then after that season he fired Ken Macha for the last 2 years and now will be hiring his 3rd. But Hendry beat him to the punch. I looked up Dombrowski, Jocketty, Colletti, Sabean and none of them have made 3 managerial hires at their current (or St. Louis for Jocketty) position. Dombrowski and Jocketty have won WS, no?
  24. I'm not. He sucks. touche I hope iffy is as good as anybody feels about Silva, but they should feel worse
  25. I hope everybody is iffy on Silva.
