  1. Post economic collapse + not allowing the company to take the full name - ala, Citi Field - you won't get nearly the same deal. The marque will stay the same, but you can get the name out there. Definitely worth it, but it's going to be tough. Yeah. Heck, why don't we just do it all the way then? People are going to know it's Wrigley. I think the backlash against that would make it less worthwhile for the company that is naming it. I think eventually they will name the "campus" something, so it will be Wrigley Field at XYZ Park. That name will be all over the Triangle building and on top of the facade.

  3. I think that's exactly it. What is he going to do, threaten to move the team? Close down the Cubs? Are people going to stop visiting the "3rd biggest tourist attraction" if the state doesn't give them money? What are the #1 and #2 tourist attractions? Are they raking in as much profit as the Cubs? I think Ricketts has no leverage and also these people are feeling Ricketts out. They aren't going to just hand out money to some guy who just spent close to a billion dollars on the team because he asks nicely. He needs to play hardball with them, but how? By not investing in the community. By talking with Milwaukee about playing a season there so they can do a more cost effective and comprehensive overhaul of the ballpark (taking away a lot of money from the area for a year). By alligning himself with the right mayoral candidate. There's a few things he can do. Good ideas for sure, but shouldn't he have thought about these BEFORE he asked for the money and said he has no other plans? Now, if he threatens leaving for a season or something like that, doesn't he just come across that much worse at that point? I doubt he cares how he comes across, unless he has plans to run for governor. But Illinois votes for scumbags anyway so who cares? He can play the nice guy by saying we have this lovely plan and would just like a little help with the tax policy to make it feasible, and if he is denied, then he can have underlings play hardball. This is almost certainly why Kenney is still around and going to be his responsibility. I'm sure they have some sort of game plan that they are following.

  5. You shouldn't build your defensive gameplan around either Dolphins QB.
  6. It's time to package Wells as a great value pitcher to a lower payroll team.
  7. interstate commerce
  8. And the replacement catcher could absolutely suck while the fill-in RF could be fine.
  9. Probably more rewarding to go to Chicago during the holidays than Boise or some other locations.
  10. I don't see any way that the Big Ten would agree to hold its game at such a small gimmicky football field, unless it was a one time thing at the outset to drum up even more interest. But even that wouldn't make a lot of sense for them.
  11. I think you're overstating the "attention and push Sandberg got in his attempt to become a manager". If anything, I'd think teams would shy away from Sandberg's attitude that led him to this point rather than fear of him making noise or people clamoring for him if he coached for them in a non-managerial role. Sandberg seems to think he'd be a distraction as everybody would clamor for him to take the job.
  12. What bench coaches don't want to be managers? A good deal of them. Zimmer was Torre's bench coach. Then he groomed some other guys who were not a threat to his job. Bench coaches are usually guys being groomed for a position by an experienced manager, or a former manager lending his expertise to a younger manager. I don't think many managers take on a bench coach they don't have a personal relationship with if that guy is trying to get a manager's job.
  13. http://deadspin.com/5690560/the-bottom-100-the-worst-players-in-nfl-history-part-2 Stan Thomas makes an appearance. Michael Haynes cracks the top 20.
  14. I can't complain about 17 overall and somebody ranking them 21st isn't outlandish. This team is far from a proven contender. They should get punished for those losses to Seattle and Washington. I'd probably have them more like 14-15, but I can see 17.
  15. I'd think the same principle applies. Jersey rails about the Cubs hiring a marketing guy to be their "stat guru" all the time. DePo has a very limited scouting background, and is famous for having poor relational skills. In an area that has as much subjective evaluation as player development, I don't think he'd be the ideal candidate. Not that he'd be awful for the job, but it really doesn't suit his skills the best. Kinda like playing Devin Hester exclusively at CB or something like that. Those are very different situations though. The Cubs hired a marketing guy to be the only guy in the organization that pays attention to stats and the outcome was predictable. The guy in charge of evaluating minor leaguers isn't the only guy in the organization involved in their development. He has scouts under him. They have all sorts of minor league instructors.
  16. Other points are none of those teams is flawless. Jets and Patriots can be beat, and they are home games. Vick is doing great but he doesn't have a strong history against the Bears and Chicago has been playing Philly tough for the most part, winning as underdogs on a few occasions. They won't go 0-7. Odds are they will win 1 that everybody thought was a loss, and lose a game they should have won. I think 3-4 is a strong possiblity but if they beat Miami this Thursday, a 10-11 win season remains a strong possibility.
  17. Not sure how they would be screwed on a draft pick. 6-10 is going to give them an upper echelon pick, but not a top 5 that will be a contract hindrance.
  18. Ronnie Brown will play more QB than any of them.
  19. You can't have him and Kevin Millwood you spoiled brat.
  20. http://deadspin.com/5690535/the-bottom-100-the-worst-players-in-nfl-history-part-1 100 worst NFL players in history (100-51, top 50 to come later).
  21. More than Nebraska/Texas A&M? absoeffinglutely Ha ha. No one in the south gives a [expletive] about Iowa-Ohio State. Hell, no one seems to care anything about the Big Ten in the south. Nobody outside of Texas cares about the Texas.
  22. If Tampa and Oakland can do what they did, there is no reason Pittsburgh can't. At least they have a built in fan base where if they do have any success, the reaction will be strong. They would not struggle to sell playoff tickets. It also helps that they are in the same division as the Cubs instead of the Yankees and Red Sox.
