  1. What does Sacremento have to do with LA? The LA Kings are a hockey team and they do fairly well in attendance. As for the Jags, they have 6 playoff appearances in their 15 seasons. I wouldn't exactly call them consistently mediocre. Besides, its the NFL, and any team can turn into a 10-12 game winner in one or two seasons.
  2. I'm sure they can get 80,000 people to go 8 times a year with ease if they put the stadium in Downtown LA or the City of Industry. Nobody will go to games? People go to freaking Clippers games 41 times a year, let alone the Lakers, Dodgers, Angels, Kings and Ducks. The Raiders left because the stadium is a complete dump. The Rams left for a sweetheart stadium deal. LA will not struggle to support a football team. What they need is a stadium.
  3. I see the difference. It's quite clear. One was a sucker punch and one was a man on man fight. Everybody sees the difference. It's a non-story, except you are playing the dunce for some reason.
  4. What's wrong with the basketball side? It's not like Georgetown and Marquette, for instance, don't deserve to be in a big-time basketball conference even if they don't want to be big-time in football. Not sure what else you can do with schools like that. TCU in the Big East, FWIW, really doesn't make much less sense than staying in the MWC. Travels to Boise and Fresno would've been just as long as their trips to the northern Big East schools and now they get the BCS bid. It's ridiculous that the conference has twice as many schools in basketball. What don't you get?
  5. I'm not insane because I can see the difference. Seymour sucker punched a guy and Johnson was in a fight where two guys were punching and grabbing facemasks. You are acting like an idiot by ignoring that difference and painting the Johnson fight as a one man attack.
  6. Henry Blanco was a light hitting backup catcher. Koyie Hill is a complete non-entity at the plate and a negative to the team. He's got a career OPS+ of 49 and has over 500 PA the past two seasons. That's bad.
  7. Baker can pound lefties. It's not crazy to keep him around on a team with such limited offense. But Hill is stupid.
  8. Say what you will about the Big Ten having more than 10 teams, that's a heck of a lot better than these crazy multi-regional conferences and ones with twice the number of schools for basketball.
  9. Could be...Urlacher loves to talk, but isn't always good at it. But isn't that the point? $50k might be a huge amount to one guy and nothing to another guy. A strict percentage would at least ensure a similar disincentive to everyone, regardless of salary/status. EDIT: Bob's suggestion would work. Yes, that is the reason why they went from $5,000 fines to $50,000, but they are probably going to have a hard time getting people to agree to $150,000.
  10. If that's his concern, perhaps he should be advocating that fines be assessed as a percentage of salary, rather than a "flat rate". Where was he advocating a flat rate? I read that he said something about different levels. Right...sorry...I just meant flat rate as in a set dollar amount. Instead of assessing a $50k penalty, assess 1% of salary penalty. I think his "different levels" thing was in regards to severity of the hit, not necessarily to account for salary. At least that's how I read it. I read it as a guy who doesn't have his union rep (Hillemeyer) around him all the time so he struggled to articulate what he meant. But I'm pretty sure he was suggesting smaller fines for lesser paid players. A strict % may be ridiculous though. Some guys could be getting $150,000 fines.

  12. I think he has a point about league minimum guys getting fined $50k. They increase it to make it matter to the rich guys, but that hurts the regulars.
  13. That's not really half the country. It's a large landmass, but not a lot of people.
  14. Pittsburgh won with a pretty weak line. They had more WR weapons to somewhat offset the problem, but it was a pretty big problem. Yeah I was gonna say, I remember that line being pretty bad. Of course I don't think we have a Santonio Holmes, much less a Hines Ward on our roster. They had a QB who was pretty hard to bring down, too. Guys would come through and just not get Big Ben on the ground. It was clear the blocking wasn't all that great. They just compensated for it. I don't think we can really do that. Jay can move, but he's not going to bust tackles very often. Maybe tough to bring down, but they certainly got it done frequently.
  15. He was ruled ineligible and then reinstated.
  16. http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2010/12/ncaa_rules_auburns_cam_newton.html What a strange decision.
  17. I would doubt it, only because they have such a terrific rivalry with all three of their division foes, and especially Oakland/Denver. I think STL remains the perfect candidate to switch. STL/IND/HOU/TEN is a fairly natural rivarly, at least geographically. But a lot of people think it will just be San Diego moving north, which would be incredibly boring.
  18. It's not just about avoiding recurring injuries. He will be in his 30's by the time this extension kicks in and middle infielders do not have great histories in their 30's. Injuries of any kind, related to previous ones or brand new could play a factor at any time. This seems to be entirely a PR ploy, to show the fans they are in it for the long haul or something. But they've tried it with Hampton and Helton and got burned on both occasions. There's no baseball advantage to the deal.
  19. I bet a rivalry would not take long at all if they were in the same division. I think LA is looking at a couple teams, and I would hope they wind up taking the Jaguars. Minnesota may only be about the stadium ploy.
  20. My point on ownership was in relation to the note about the Bears needing to fix things. Also, the reason the capacity is so low is because they decided to build it inside the existing structure. It's very tight in there and not much they can do to add substantial seats. There were two issues with Soldier Field: capacity and width of the field. They could probably remove a couple rows on either side and then expand in the North end zone or something. This is also an event 12 years in the future. A lot can change between now and then. Unless they move or suddenly decided to tear down the outside structure of Soldier Field, not much can change in relation to space for building more capacity. And there isn't much room to add in the end zone, at least not enough to offset taking away sideline seating while adding overall.

  22. I think it would be extremely difficult to increase capacity at Soldier Field. Also, it's not owned by the Bears. They can't really do anything. The Park District has offered to go to fake turf, but the Bears don't want that and FIFA doesn't accept it either, correct?
  23. http://deadspin.com/5703351/gary-lineker-pooped-himself-during-a-world-cup-match I'd rather Soldier Field not be involved if there is a chance of some limey bastard rubbing his backside all over the turf.
