    Chicago's offense has needed every snap all year to get to where they are, and they still have room to improve. There is something to be gained by playing a quality opponent at full capacity when you have 2 weeks before your next game.

    You're simply overlooking the fact that the Saints aren't the Patriots.

    That doesn't make any sense. Sure it does, NO's passing game is more critical to the Bears than HFA and the possibility of bad weather. That short passing game will exploit the Bears weaknesses more than the standard 5 step drop of ATL. Atl will try and get Turner going and then go vertical with Jenkins/White, the one concern would be Gonzalez. The Saints will carbon copy NE and unlike ATL have the ability to rack up points like that regardless of location/atmosphere. New Orleans has a precision passing game that can, and has been exposed in less than ideal conditions. They are also a -5 in the turnover battle while Atlanta leads the league. I cannot conceive of any legitimate reason why anybody would rather face Atlanta in Atlanta than the Saints in Chicago in January. It may not be "Bear weather", but it sure has hell isn't anything the Saints are good at dealing with.

    Grace would be a really good addition to the radio booth, but I'm guessing that he has established roots in Arizona these days. I'm sure he's knocked up random cocktail waitresses in every MLB city, not sure what that has to do with anything though.

    You have to qualify that for where they play. New Orleans would be in Chicago, I'd like the Bears chances against them there a lot more than Chicago in Atlanta.

    Completely ignores the point that a parent can still ask for money. If they get it, they have the money and then just hope for no suspension. If they don't get it, no harm no foul. You have to make asking for the money an offense.

    One step forward, one step back. Way too many losses, especially to teams they are in the hunt with.

    There are only so many backups they can use at once. And the more you put in there, the more you are exposing your remaining starters by forcing them to play with lesser players. You only get 45 actives, and WR, TE, RB, DL and DB all use some sort of rotation already. And most of those guys all play special teams as well. What do you do, take out Urlacher, Forte, Cutler, Briggs, Peppers, Tillman, Hester and Knox?

    I think franchise QB implies "elite" or near elite status. Yeah, I'm not sure exactly what "franchise" QB truly means to other people, but here's my list of them anyway....... Brady P Manning Roethlisberger Rivers E Manning Vick Rodgers Cutler Brees Ryan Guys that I expect to make this list very soon would be...... Bradford Freeman Guys that CAN make this list...... Stafford Flacco Guys I don't consider at all, but could see some people that would...... Romo Schaub Cassel Sanchez How is Flacco so low?

    Cutler is better at exploiting the blitz with quick passes.

    He burned his bridges with MacPhail, if I recall. But I'm not sure the Cubs regime has any issues with him. Hendry was around, but he doesn't make marketing decisions.

    Vick gets smashed because he's much more of a runner. Personally, I have no problem if they let the starters play all game.

    Yeah, he was undrafted free agent signed by Redskins, then cut and signed by New Orleans. He was ignored by teams in the draft not just based on Missouri's offense. Plenty of non-traditional NFL offenses produce QBs that teams look at, and draft, every year.

    I had this little conversation this weekend. Friend's first point: Eli Manning is overrated, without the Super Bowl victory he wouldn't be considered much of a franchise QB. Friend's second point: Jay Cutler can't be considered a franchise QB until he wins in the postseason. So one guy with better weapons but disappointing results is overrated due to his postseason wins, but another guy with lesser weapons and protection and better results, shouldn't be rated higher until he wins in the postseason? Seems confusing. Not to mention Eli has had a lot of coaching stability, the same head coach for his entire career, the same offensive coordinator for 4 years, and that OC was his QB coach before that, plus he was drafted 2 years earlier. Cutler has dealt with much more coaching turmoil and turnover.

    I think you are talking about two different things, the NFL's motives and Disney's motives. I think Disney wanted to keep MNF. Also, NBC wanted back in. So instead of trying to outbid NBC for both, they kept their favorite and moved it to their sports specialists and kept it a premier product. I don't think ESPN's leverage increased though by getting MNF. In the process, they lost SNF. And now that flex scheduling is in play, the matchups for MNF are often even worse than the old SNF matchups used to be. MNF is still the only game in town, so to speak, while SNF is just the last game of a long day of NFL football. MNF is the more unique product.

    I do not think Pena can realistically play anywhere else. But he is also not much of a threat to start 162 games at 1B. He's never played 150. He's also not that extreme of a LHP/RHP hitter, while Thomas has been a RHP killer. My guess is you could get Thome 10-15 starts at 1B, another few DH starts, but mainly use him as a PH threat. I would use him as the first guy off the bench every game, almost regardless of situation. Even if you just force the opposing manager to burn through his loogy it can help.

    I don't know that what you linked really justifies the move to cable though. I mean, it's doing great...for cable. But you could still make the argument that it would do better on network tv. I'm having trouble finding much in the way of ABC MNF ratings info other than record highs and record lows though. Yeah, but the complaint was cable ratings would be terrible. Meanwhile, since that decision was made cable TV has blown networks out of the water in terms of performance, if not overall ratings. It was exactly the right time to make the move. Cable is a much more viable place for quality/profitable programming than its reputation was when they switched. Gotcha. Yeah, I agree cable was the right move. Though I wonder if ABC ever wishes they still had it...Monday night is not a strong night for them. Disney made a concerted effort to move away from ABC sports and toward ESPN sports. Don't they call their ABC college lineup something like ESPN College Football? ESPN was already a cable must, but after MNF I think their leverage to demand more from providers increased.

    What does the talent level look like if he returns? If he is a late 1st early 2nd this year, it may be a great idea to return and boost himself into the top of the 1st. Also, what teams in the 2nd half of the 1st round are likely taking a QB? Miami or Jacksonville?

    I just think the combinatin of not really amazing stats and only 2 years of starting would be hold some people back. Compare him to Jay Cutler, who played a hell of a lot more against better competition in the SEC, and for the worst program in the SEC. It took coming back for his senior year to give him a real shot at the 1st round. Unless you are playing for a QB factory/national champion like USC or putting up better numbers, teams are very hesitant to take underclassmen without 3 years of starting. You'd have to comp him up against an Aaron Rodgers who only started 2 years, but he did a lot more in those 2 years, was clearly #2 and slipped very late in the first.
