  1. No way is this system better than it has been in decades. That's ridiculous. One decade ago it was better. There may be multiple guys who project as useful, but the majority of those will still fail to live up to their limited projections.
  2. You can plow over the other players. Happens all the time to 2B/SS covering second, particularly when the runner is trying to bust up a potential double play. I'd guess far more middle infielders are hurt from collisions from runners than catchers, which makes sense given that they have far less protection. That's a whole bunch of nonsense. Nobody plows into middle infielders. They slide in and occasionaly catch them with their cleats in just the right spot. The injuries are about legs being planted poorly or coming down awkwardly, they aren't getting plowed into, and the lack of protection has nothing to do with how they get hurt.
  3. reminded me of pedro's brother popping a groin on a ridiculously cold april day at wrigley
  4. i never really expected more than that out of him. I never expected much either, but his early success is going to raise hopes and give him a longer leash. And eventually there will be a "get rid of this guy" and a "he's the least of our problems" crowd bickering about him.
  5. Darwin Barney is going to enter Theriot territory eventually and it's going to be a shame.
  6. I missed the play but saw the end of the replay, was it on there and then came off? Because what I saw he was nowhere near.
  7. Exactly. No one says anyone has to put themselves in harm's way in sports. It's human nature and competitiveness. Guys are going to get hurt if they continue risky behavior. You can't outlaw contact in all sports. If someone doesn't want to risk injury for 1 game in May, they don't have to. Goodell is trying to eliminate contact in the NFL. 8. Yeah, I was all excited that Time Warner cable picked up WGN this year but this has been one of the few weekday games I've seen them air, and of course a Mets game.
  9. Is the Cubs game on 2 channels in my office or am I just making up excuses to procrastinate?
  10. How crazy is it that I don't think it's quite over yet. Get healthy, get lucky, get hot, and we could still squeak out this awful division. There's 71% of the season remaining, so of course it's possible if they get lucky and hot. But their crappy division leader still has the 3rd best winning percentage among the leaders. They already have 4 teams to jump and are on pace for a 90 loss season. The Cubs need to win at a 90 win pace the rest of the way just to get to 85 wins. STL has to play to 1 game under .500 the rest of the way to get 85. It's a huge uphill battle and they already went into the season needing nearly everything to go right to contend.
  11. Would be nice to have Gorzellany around. Mysterious injuries after reckless use during a rain delay raise my Lieber detector.
  12. Hit and runs blow. It's just a way for managers to show they are trying to make things happen, and if it fails it's the players fault.
  13. Yup, but there's also more of them. So when one starts to decline you can just dump them for the next one. I will never advocate for having a speedy team if that will not lead to winning. I want the Cubs to win first. But if it gets to the point where having speed/defense is a viable way to play, I don't think that's a bad thing for the sport either. More of them? There's a handful of good fast players. Speed is absolutely worthless if you can't hit and the majority of fast players cannot hit at a major league level.
  14. He had 9 over a 2 week period in July that came after a pretty long layoff. Shoulder injuries are tough. From my experience you can feel fine for a while and all of a sudden have your strength zapped. And the smallest thing can tweak it. Combine that with him entering his mid 30's and I'm guessing it's very difficult for him to maintain the strength necessary to power his somewhat unique swing. I don't see how there is anyway the injury isn't a factor. Coming back initially doesn't mean you're done with the after effects.
  15. My biggest fear with Aramis, his injury and his swing is that it looked to me like his power came largely from a ridiculously violent upper cut swing that appeared to rely heavily on that left shoulder. He doesn't seem to have that violent upper cut anymore. And as somebody who got away with a relatively poor approach, swinging at lots of stuff he shouldn't have, due to a pretty strong ability to make contact and hit it with power, any reduction in that power along with age is going to hurt big time.
  16. There are few things more enjoyable than seeing NY sports sections the morning after their teams lose to a Chicago team.
  17. I think the assumption is Wilpon is laying out his "I'm no genius capable of pulling off the Madoff heist" defense rather than I'm really just going to give away all my best parts.
  18. Yeah, but looking back at that 1st round in 2000, aside from Baldelli(6), Utley(15) and Wainwright(29), its not like we missed out on much. Missing out on Utley is the definition of missing out on much. Aside from Utley? Yeah, maybe you can't criticize the choice, but they still missed out on mucho much. As an aside, I still can't watch Teixeira bat without thinking of what should have been. Oh how I long for an impact college bat.
  19. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/breaking/cbsports-montanez-to-join-cubs-outfield-picture-20110524,0,3437456.story http://cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110524&content_id=19487146&vkey=news_chc&c_id=chc It's officially Montanez.
  20. There has never been anything interesting involving the state of Connecticut, let alone Hartford.
  21. I have no idea what is going on here but I hope this wasn't just accepted as the base from which any disagreement would be discussed.
  22. Recent improvements count in so much as they leave his overall numbers in "really bad 1B territory". That is where we stand at present.
