My biggest fear with Aramis, his injury and his swing is that it looked to me like his power came largely from a ridiculously violent upper cut swing that appeared to rely heavily on that left shoulder. He doesn't seem to have that violent upper cut anymore. And as somebody who got away with a relatively poor approach, swinging at lots of stuff he shouldn't have, due to a pretty strong ability to make contact and hit it with power, any reduction in that power along with age is going to hurt big time.

Yeah, but looking back at that 1st round in 2000, aside from Baldelli(6), Utley(15) and Wainwright(29), its not like we missed out on much. Missing out on Utley is the definition of missing out on much. Aside from Utley? Yeah, maybe you can't criticize the choice, but they still missed out on mucho much. As an aside, I still can't watch Teixeira bat without thinking of what should have been. Oh how I long for an impact college bat.

Recent improvements count in so much as they leave his overall numbers in "really bad 1B territory". That is where we stand at present.

At the moment he's got a line of .216/.359/.360, it's going to take a while to make that pleasing. For a guy like Pena not necessarily. He has the potential for wild swings in his numbers because he's so much extra base hit or bust. That's why his numbers can go up 300 points like they did in 17 days in May or go down 50 points like they did just this past weekend. Whatever swing his numbers will take, they have the potential to do it very, very quickly. "At the moment" he has a low 700 OPS. That is not pleasing. It would have to be another time and place in baseball history for such numbers out of a 1B to be pleasing.

Maybe. But the first 5+ years will likely be amazing. Not only will the first half be glorious, but the cost certainty involved will allow the Cubs several years to plan for 2017 and beyond.

I don't understand your continued references to distance in time away from the sale. The only way "the sale" is affecting current payroll situations is because of how bloated it became leading up to the sale, and that is tied to the money coming off the books, which you already referenced. Then you have the normal increases in revenue over time. In what other way are you assuming the further away from the sale the higher the payroll will go?

When do you foresee this window opening, and for how long will it be open?* *Big market teams don't have windows. Oakland had a window. Minnesota and Cleveland have had a couple windows. Big market teams either do it right and win or do it wrong and lose, but there is no window involved.

Pujols for 10 is probably not much more risky than Reyes for 5-6, considering so much of Reyes game is predicated on his legs, the fact that his legs are brittle and he will turn 30 in the first half of his next contract. It's also a mistake to think of 2B as interchangable with SS in terms of being a premium position for offense. 2B need to produce more to be considered good, along the lines of what 3B do. If you sign a big money free agent to play 2B, he better be damn good to justify it.

Almost always I would agree with you on not spending huge money on first base - I argued that this past offseason when debating against the idea of overpaying Adam Dunn. The logic I used was that we could spend $40-50+ million for 4 years of a Dunn and get a 3-4 WAR player or we could spend $10 million over one year (or two, I guess) for 2-3 WAR out of Carlos Pena. Pujols is such a different player, though. It's easy to find 2-4 WAR any offseason out of first base, but it's impossible to find 8 WAR out of any position at any time - except for this offseason, potentially. And the positive thing about him playing first is that any defensive dropoff he had (and he'll have a defensive dropoff in an 8-10 year contract) would be much easier to deal with than if he were a third baseman or an outfielder. You are confusing "not spending huge money" with not committing to long term contracts. If you want production at 1B you still need to spend big unless you are bringing up your own stud. And unless you have a whole bunch of studs elsewhere, you need 1B to be very productive if you want to contend. It may be the easiest place to find a hitter, but you still need that hitter.

This is a bunch of pointless nonsense along the lines of critizing fans who point out that the worst hitters in the league are terrible without pointing out that they are only terrible in comparison to the rest of the best baseball players in the world.

How am I ignoring that? Yeah, they have struggled at that through the years, but they do have Soto and Castro right now. You are talking about a couple 800ish OPS players at positions where that is meaningful, and the Cubs still suck.

The quote reads like it was just speculation on Sharma's part, but I agree. Perez makes more sense from a macro perspective. On the other hand, Perez is hitting .212/.339/.293 at Iowa to Campana's .342/.383/.442, and there's no shortage of 40 man roster spots. We dont need an extra set of legs. I say just go with one of the power bats like Montanez, LaHair, Snyder, or Moore and see if they can bring us some Jake Fox lightning in a bottle and then try to get something out of them in trade when we no longer have use for them. All we really need is a bat. We have 4 outfielders, and if needed, apparently Baker and DeWitt can play there every now and then as well. No point in wasting the roster spot on an 8th inning defensive replacement for Soriano. Montanez is 29 years old and has a 320 SLG in the majors. How is he a power bat? 5 HR in the extremely hitter friendly PCL his 5th time through AAA is pretty much meaningless. I'm not a speed fan, but if you are going to fret about getting it on the team, I'm fine with putting it on the bench. Those other guys are all pretty old, while the youngest one (Moore - 27) has a .394 SLG right now. It's the 25th man, not going to come close to making or breaking your team.

It's pretty damn close to a failure if you have no potential stars on the horizon. It's nice to produce some good guys, but if you want to win, you need some top notch production from your farm. You can't just sign it. They tried that for two decades under the MacPhail/Hendry regime and it failed repeatedly. Unless you can outbid everybody (the Yankees), you can't live that way.

Very little, if any, interest in John Madden back unless it's for well under $1.0m. He didn't really do anything with the Blackhawks last time, and he's 38. I don't really think 3/4 line center needs to be the big quest. They need some defensive help and they could use a forward that can be physical and skate at the same time.
