  1. That's just it: The legal ramifications aren't as bad as you think. Before baseball let's someone buy a franchise, they make them sign a bunch of paperwork agreeing that the commissioner has broad powers and that they won't sue MLB no matter what. They'd sue anyway, of course, but so far that power has held up in courts thanks to the anti-trust exemption. Whether or not he would interfere is a whole other story, but it's clear he has the power to interfere if he wanted to. Yeah, and when you go on a field trip at school they make you sign paperwork saying you won't sue if you get hurt. The commish is only ever going to interfere in the most extreme circumstances because the legal entanglements that will ensure without a slam dunk case (the Dodgers) would be too large to make it worth it. Plus, the fallout from other owners who don't like being told what to do. This isn't 1932. The owners are billionaires with all the real power. Bud is their front man. He's not an arbiter of all transactions.
  2. no you wont'
  3. First, you are correct, Selig might not exercise his authority because he's concerned about the consequences. However, merely because he would not does not mean he could not. Second, I'm not sure why you believe the "best interests of baseball" has any limitation at all. There's a whole hell of a lot that could be done in the best interests of baseball that Bud does not because the legal ramifications and/or the fallout from interfering with an owner's business is too huge. Why the hell would he interfere here? It makes no sense.
  4. How much compensation did her father require?
  5. tree-man? is that like an oak tree with two legs? did you just join? I always read it like the HBO show.
  6. You mean Donald Trump. Trump got it from Vince. And if he's going to go all Vince McMahon on Quade, I hope like hell he makes him join the Kiss My Ass Club before he fires him. I didn't know you could "get" a common phrase like that from a specific blowhard.
  7. people loved gammons? There was a time when the Cubs were rated as the best, or close to the best minor league system (before Baylor/Baker et al destroyed the thing), and Peter used to regularly praise the up and coming Cubs organization. I loved him then.
  8. It said the budget would be $150m, not payroll. That included major league payroll plus draft picks/international signings. Not sure where front office budget comes into play.
  9. I think quite a few show that stuff, at least OBP. All this talk about random media types checking in reminds me I want to find out who that douche is that keeps appearing on CTL. He tries to come across as some smooth cool dude and he looks like a date rapist. He said dumb stuff. That's Matt Bowen. He's awesome. But I would only listen to him on football x's and o's. The rest he just shouldn't even be talking about. definitely not him.

  11. This was probably already posted but I didn't notice and thought this was interesting. http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/7123358/source-chicago-cubs-announce-theo-epstein-hire-world-series
  12. How many pages would this thread be if it was just the posts with people making comments about how many more pages/posts have been made without any new news or announcement?
  13. Exactly. In this case, they're just titles. You can't bring Hoyer over and make him assistant GM. It would just look bad. And this sells the promotion on Theo's part much better, too. I don't agree with your interpretation of how something like this would work. It's not just titles. It's just titles when you make the assistant to the traveling secretary the new vice president of assisting traveling secretaries. If you go out and get 2 current GMs to run your office, it is doubtful that one of those guys is going to be a de facto asst GM. If Epstein is going to be the president of baseball ops, then he's going to be the president of baseball ops and the GM is going to be the GM. And that GM is going to have asst GMs. If Theo is president, he will be involved in the biggest moves, like signing Pujols or trading for an ace, but the GM will have final say on virtually all other transactions. Otherwise he isn't GM.
  14. Correction: president of baseball operations. Call them what you will, but for all practical purposes, Theo will be GM and Hoyer will be Assistant GM. I don't think that's true. Why not? Whether their titles are GM and Assistant GM or President and GM, they'd still be in the same spot in the organizational hierarchy and they'd still be working mostly together, but Hoyer would be the one doing most of the grunt work. The guy who is GM is the guy making individual decisions. The guy who is president is the guy who is setting longterm goals for the team, overall organizational direction and philosophy. In that type of set-up, he would probably be in on any Pujols type discussion, but not the majority of transactions.
  15. There was a fluff investigation? Now I regret giving up my subscription.
  16. If Crane Kenney is involved in negotiations that is probably not a bad thing. Of all the employees of the Cubs he's probably the most qualified to negotiate something. He can utlize all the input from the other Cubs employees as far as rating their own prospects.
  17. This thread epitomizes all that is wrong with NSBB these days. Would somebody please think of the children?!?!?
  18. Are you sure that's what he said? Any chance you are exaggerating a bit, because that is idiotic and not something I would assume Gammons would say. It's about the Red Sox. Gammons fanboyism knows no bounds when it comes to them and his pal Larry. This and the fact that Gammons was always a clown and then got a respite for having a stroke or something. I remember Gammons as one of the first journalists I LOLed at consistently 10-15 years ago. Gammons was always way off when it came to talking about imminent trades that never materialized, but he was always up on things like prospects and their worth long before anybody else in mainstream baseball media acknowledged that prospects had value. He's clearly a Red Sox homer in that he would focus on them and probably sympathize with their side of a situation, but him making such asinine statements as this indicates his brain suffered some sort of damage, or he just pores on the idiotic homer schtick more when talking to local Boston radio.

  20. Those are a couple good points, but it is still a little disconcerting that Keith keeps having the same issues that plagued him last year. Phoenix is atrocious, and that Bolland goal was funny.
  21. On the other hand, maybe these Boston fans are making a lot of sense. some of that link may be NSFW

  23. Well, there's no way the contract talks aren't a distraction for Forte. The guy could go down tomorrow with a career ending injury and never sign the sort of life altering contract that he's bound to get. Forte also said something silly when he questioned why the Bears would pay him the $8m he'd get from a franchise tag when they won't give him a deal that averages $8m (because they think you only have a couple years left Matt). But being a distraction doesn't mean you play worse. And really, all he's saying is "hey fans you know what, if we lose you should blame management for not paying guys and causing distractions." He's putting pressure on management.
