  1. I probably saw every at bat he ever had before his first retirement. My opinion of him was extremely high at the time but has done nothing but go downhill since.
  2. ............and that makes him equal to Z in what way? Not equal, worse. People say Z quit when he said he retired, but he didn't really as it was just an emotional outburst. Sandberg actually followed through on quitting on his team like the cold calculated me-first jerk that he is.
  3. I'm exaggerating a bit, but I never particularly liked him once I was old enough not to just love him for being a Cub. He was like Ryan Theriot in how he thought way too much of himself, especially on defense because of his overrated fielding percentage. His HOF speech really rubbed me the wrong way. I enjoyed the speech honestly. What didn't you like, the "playing the game with right way" part? The sanctimonious BS, relentless self promotion and tearing down of others. A proper HOF speech thanks everybody who helpd you get there, thanks the fans, acknowledges that you were pretty good and had a good time, and that's it. It's not a freaking forum to launch your coaching job or get a gig writing about how horrible the younger generation is.
  4. Why? Why do people think former great players would make good managerial candidates? What is this based on? Because they are good at stuff they must be good at other stuff. It's the peter principle of sports.
  5. Other than the fact that he is a documented quitter, sure, he's not as bad as we like to say. But most of that is in response to irrational demands that he be given the job just because. The manager really doesn't matter all that much in the end. The Cardinals were able to win two with a drunk driving cat sexxer. Ozzie Freaking Guillen won a World Series.
  6. Sorry to let you down there big fella.
  7. I have to think that outside of the Cubs job he was never going to be a major league manager. So, he got a shot and made more money doing that (I assume) than he ever would just bouncing around from minor league gigs and bench duty. But I did have some pity on him for being so overwhelmed.
  8. But for the first time, I actually feel incredibly confident that we will get Theo's prime target. It all started when Tom went after Theo and got him. The dominoes have been falling in place since then. Honestly, we are 3rd choice on that list. I agree that Cardinals job will be 3rd.
  9. But for the first time, I actually feel incredibly confident that we will get Theo's prime target. It all started when Tom went after Theo and got him. The dominoes have been falling in place since then. Hendry almost always got the guy he targeted.
  10. that's as good a reason to hire him as the fact that he played for them before
  11. It could never work. He should get a major league coaching job somewhere, but if it did it in Chicago the fans and media would bring up the possibility of promotion after every loss.
  12. You're talking about all the times he got him thrown out of minor league games? no, I'm trying to understand your implication that Ryne Sandberg = Zambrano He retired in the middle of a season, but actually did retire and didn't just freak out.
  13. And quit on his team in the middle of a season

  15. He also quit on his team in the middle of a season and really only had a 14.5 year career. Would you want Zambrano managing the Cubs? Comparing Z and Ryno is quite comical. That's true. Z came back to the team almost immediately while Ryno actually followed through on screwing everybody over.

  17. I'm hoping for somebody who has only been a minor league base coach since no earlier than 07.
  18. He's probably not as qualified as the person they wind up hiring will be.
  19. I think the guys who will actually be on that staff would be a bit more important than the manager and pitching coach.
  20. I think some of that is just paying lip service to the things fans and media demand, while also referring to a guy who will come into a game prepared with the pertinent information/data.
  21. It's not just the beer. It's the "players manager" style. There's less accountability in general assumed in that. Francona was/is considered a players manager. Not to mention that the anecdotal lax approach to conditioning taken by some of the Red Sox players this year was one of the many scapegoat excuses. Ultimately, the GM places that on the manager, whether right or wrong. I'm not taking a position for or against that idea, frankly, with a well assembled team, I'm pretty sure that most managerial candidates won't cost or gain many wins. Right. What I'm saying is that those kind of antics have been the scuttlebutt about the Red Sox for at least the entire time Francona was running the team, and they were even hyped up after they won the '04 WS. I can buy someone saying a lack of conditioning meant their pitching went flat at the end of the season, but that general climate/attitude/whatever was pervasive the entire time he was there and it didn't seem to be too much of a detriment. If this was Hendry, wouldn't we call this obvious reactionary BS, designed to imitate this years WS winner? I don't get it. If what was Hendry?
