  1. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-passan_ultimate_free_agent_tracker_baseball_110211 Here's another list. He's got Pena listed 19th and said he had "an excellent season". I'm not sure how a guy who was 16th at his position for WAR could be considered excellent. Kerry Wood is listed 35th and the quote is: "His reinvention as a late-inning reliever is one of the nicer stories in baseball. No more talking about what could’ve been. What he is now is pretty darn good." I like the guy, but Kerry Wood has not been "pretty darn good."
  2. What is that publication? How do they claim his teams steal well when they were in the 65% range? A lot of that was in the 80's and early 90's. It's a different game now, so I'd be curious where he stands on that issue today. Yeah, I think it's a stretch to take too much away from his style - if it's even accurate - from 25 years ago in the low minors. But that said, I'd love to hear more about his present game philosophies. The Phillies were not a big SB, SH or SF team this year. They haven't been a SH or SF team in recent years, and while they have been a big SB team, that has been due mostly to 2 guys, Victorino and Rollins, and their percentages have been in the 80-85% range, which is great.
  3. I thought it was clear Greg didn't want a day job.

  5. Of the two I think he's much more likely to return to his team than Fielder. StL can afford it, he's obviously the most iconic player there in decades. Can they actually afford him, though? If they could, it never should have gotten to the point it is now. I'm not big on predictions, but this is one I'm pretty comfortable betting on. I think they can, but may be unwilling, as it would stress their payroll much moreso than it would stress a bigger payroll team.
  6. I might be wrong, but he has managed in the Cubs organization, I think Iowa, in the past. Oh, and he's originally from Chicago and a former 2B. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Mackanin According to wiki he's managed Nashville, Frederick, Bowie, Pittsburgh and Cincy the latter two on an interim basis only.

  8. Everything I've heard about the guy says Charlie Manuel is kind of a doofus and sort of crazy. So they must have somebody sane in that dugout or on the staff to assist him. I wouldn't be opposed to the Phillies bench coach, but I have no idea who he is.
  9. He is a suit, and people hate suits. He's from the Tribune, and people hate the tribune. There have been Hendry supporters and Hendry bashers and throughout Cubs history opinion wavers on the baseball decision makers. But for at least as long as the tribune has been involved, people have used ownership as the primary target. Now only the real loony tunes are angry at Ricketts, so the only remaining suit to hate is Crane.
  10. you guys are too hell-bent on that. he took his shots back at a world that didnt treat him to greatly. he's bitter. so what. Wait. Hold on a second. The world didn't treat Ryne Sandberg too greatly?
  11. And you are not kidding around?
  12. He said that? R.T. I lost my virginity to your daughter! Rob, you were there.
  13. I dont give a [expletive]. its his HoF speech. when Sosa gets there, he can say what he wants ohh wait, thats right, those jerky sports writers will never let him in. I know, LETS TRASH SANDBERG. Really? You don't care what somebody says up there? You don't care if they dump on their former teammates?
  14. You have a very strong emotional attachment to this man. sure, in a Cubs-fan way I love the guy. That doesnt mean I dream of him being the Cubs manager, but to irrationally dump on him is rather emotional too, dont you think? I don't know what an irrational dump is.
  15. You have a very strong emotional attachment to this man.
  16. so you are saying you are just a general fan of baseball, not the Cards or Cubs, who just happens to hang out of Cubs message boards talking about the Cardinals?
  17. It's closer than you think. Carlos Zambrano: 3.6 bWAR per full season for his career Ryne Sandberg: 4.1 bWAR per full season for his career Plus there's this: Zambrano: 0.5 tQPC* Sandberg: 2.0 tQPC* *times quitting per career
  18. If they hire Francona I hope the put fried chicken in the concession stands and promote it heavily when Boston comes to town.
  19. Who? Sveum, Maddux, and Francona i'd assume. I forget, but was there a source for Sveum's name being out there or were people just talking about them?
  20. Yeah, I think he probably has a primary target in mind and is giving Quade the proper amount of time to be mourned, letting the Sandberg thing breathe and then announce soon.
  21. Zambrano told a teammate he was going to retire but then changed his mind, and for this the vast majority think he should never put on a Cubs uniform again. Ryne Sandberg actually did quit on his team in the middle of the season. But a very large group of people have nothing but glowing things to say about him and think he should lead this team.
  22. Sanders retired in the offseason. I also don't give a crap about the Lions.
  23. I probably saw every at bat he ever had before his first retirement. My opinion of him was extremely high at the time but has done nothing but go downhill since. he was the best 2nd basemen in the MLB's. yep then he quit
  24. do people really have issue with sandberg not diving for baseballs during his playing career? i'm not calling you out specifically, but this isn't the first time i've heard those types of comments from people here. That was a widespread view of him back in his playing days and in the discussions of his error-less streak and comparisons with other great middle infielders.
