    Michigan would barely be bowl eligible if they played in the SEC this year. It's a sign of just how horrible the Big Ten was this year that Michigan is even in the discussion for a BCS bowl.

    What's Stanford, Arkansas, or Georgia's most impressive win? You can go in these circles with every team. But Michigan isn't good.

    Bears are 8 point favorites, and I think that is pretty stupid with Caleb Hanie at QB. He's a TAINT waiting to happen. I'm thinking the Bears struggle to pull this one out with Orton spreading the ball around and tossing a couple TDs.

    Why are you ignoring the fact that Michigan isn't any good? Michigan is going to get housed if they get to a BCS game. Outside of LSU/Alabama and OSU I think Michigan would compete with just about any other team in the country. Stanford, USC and Oregon would slaughter them, although obviously USC won't get the chance. I think Arkansas and Georgia would handle them. What is their most impressive win, against an overrated Nebraska team?

    Three of the previous 7 World Series winners were not elite teams. The 2011 Cardinals had a pythagorean win total of 88, the 2006 Cardinals had a pythagorean win total of 82 (83 actual wins), and the 2005 White Sox had a pythagorean win total of 91 wins. The 2008 Cubs were an elite team (97 actual wins, 98 pythag wins) and got swept in the first round of the playoffs. Obviously these are only a few examples and there are other examples of elite teams winning it all. However, the point I'm making is you don't have to be elite to have a very real chance of winning the World Series. All you have to do is be good enough to make the playoffs and you might get hot at the right time. Next year the Cards won't likely have Pujols and the Brewers won't have Fielder. There's a very real chance a record a little better than .500 (85-88 wins maybe) will win the division. There's absolutely no reason why a team with the resources the Cubs have and in the division the Cubs are in should intentionally give up on even one season, much less multiple years. You also don't have to be elite in 2012 to justify signing an elite free agent. It's pretty much the heart of the insanity that defines the "don't sign these guys" reasoning.

    I disagree with your interpretation of his line of sight there. The play is designed to float it over to the guy, nobody throws lasers on a screen pass. It was a bad play call in deep. You run that at midfield, not the red zone. The Bears needed to get points there and try not to let Hanie screw up. Martz got cute and screwed the pooch.

    Now, I can see Jerry Jones throwing away 2.5 million in this instance, but I would have been floored if Green Bay threw that money away. I know they're an NFL franchise, but 2.5 million dollars a lot of cheddar (pun intended). As a Purdue fan, Kyle probably ended up in the best spot long term. He can compete with Matt Cassel, I think, and there are some weapons in KC. It's definitely the easiest competition, and aside from the weapons, there also aren't many expectations. If he displays any competency he could be rewarded. But I wonder how Denver feels now that he's in KC.

    It's happened like, three times, in baseball. I can't think of any notable instances of an NFL team placing a claim on a player they have absolutely no use for to prevent them from going to another team. There are salary cap implications, and it's Kyle Freaking Orton.

    Play for Lovie and Martz or play for Haley. You choose. I'm guessing he thinks he can benefit from being in the Martz system. Chicago looks like a potential playoff team and he could be the hero that brings them there, and if Cutler doesn't make it back, maybe he actually plays in those playoffs. KC is pathetic with a douchebag for a head coach and Houston has Leinert instead of Hanie. Orton probably feels he's got a better chance to play in Chicago and has more of a chance to impress if he does play there.

    What is there to say about Geo? You summed it up. When he's good he's been pretty darn good, but he's inconsistent and for the that reason you can't really rely on his production to pick up the slack from others.

    It's not Raiders love as much as Hanie uncertainty. Nobody wants to put money on an unknown QB on the road against a division leader.

    I'm not sure if there is something to curtail it, but I'm not sure what it could be other than not allowing teams to sign guys who are already in their system, which seems crazy. So does the IFA cap with the ability to trade parts of your cap to other teams. I think being able to trade part of your cap makes more sense than having one, and a lot more sense than not allowing you to resign your own players.

    Maybe this was discussed earlier, but with regards to Samardzija, he signed a small contract when signed, and didn't sign his "stay away from football" contract until a year later. Once a guy is already in the system there shouldn't be much from a team paying him more to give up a 2nd sport. I also don't think I really buy all the talk about guys giving up baseball in general. The vast majority of players are still going to get the same or similar money to what they used to get. Anybody who could possibily make big money in basketball is already going toward basketball. Baseball still has the largest pool of available positions to fill, potentially the longest career arc of any sport and definitely as high of an upside as any sport in terms of annual earnings. This will hurt in places like Brazil, where they were still on the ground floor, but again, people aren't necessarily looking for Lebrons out there, just a large pool of cheap talent.
