  1. He's no Joe Paterno, but there's still a lot of questions to be answered. So far the oddest part seems to be that Fine's wife's vagina was apparently a ritualistic team drill, and that she also slept with the victim.
  2. It's character suicide. He brought it on himself with the way he handled the situation. Whatever. I'll drop the Paterno thing. I just think its unfortunate that he's the face of this scandal eventhough he didn't commit any crimes or witness any crimes. He's near the bottom of "people I blame" in this grand scheme of things. But whatever... My original thought remains; Why does no one here seem to care enough about the Bernie Fine situation to mention? Its a pretty big news story in its own right, but not a single comment about it. Just seems odd to me. Lack of desire to talk about child molestation scandals after so long I assume. It's not exactly a fun topic of conversation. Interest in this thread has died down too despite new things being brought to attention. There's also a lack of people making ridiculous defenses for the people involved. The Paterno discussion didn't take off until A) everybody realized the point that there were witnesses to child rape and that Paterno and administrators knew that, and B) some people started going crazy in defense of Paterno. The Syracuse scandal seems smaller in scope, and there isn't indication that Boeheim knew he had a coach banging kids. Although I guess that could change.
  3. Thought that's what I heard, but CSN doesn't have it at the moment and I see nothing about an online feed from the Cubs. Late getting started, maybe? The Cubs just tweeted out a photo of DeJesus at Wrigley surrounded by media. So. I dunno. No video coverage for this one? Not all that newsworthy.
  4. I started writing a post yesterday about Q and the high turnover rate of NHL coaches but erased it because I felt a little too reactionary with the recent slump. But I do wonder when Q will start feeling some heat. The team is still in fine shape standings wise and should be able to have a successful season. They are only 1+ seasons removed from a Stanley Cup and Q's winning percentage is higher than all 5 coaches left on the tenure list ahead of him (although McLellen is right there with him in tenure and has a higher %). The success can't be questioned. But I do think the direction is somewhat in doubt. NHL coaches tend to turnover quickly, and sometimes almost out of nowhere. Well over half the coaches in the league took over in 2009 or later, and only 5 took their jobs before 2008. Obviously this is in my mind because of a couple of recent firings, both following prolonged losing streaks. I doubt Q goes with a 7 or 8 game losing streak. But if this team fails to get out of the first round of the playoffs this year, the talk may begin. And if they fall out of playoff contention, my guess is any slump next year will be trouble. Of course, this also raises the question about when Bowman will feel heat, as in my opinion, he's yet to do anything to actually improve the team since taking over, with most of his moves being salary cap related and cutting back on skill.
  5. Yeah, the way he phrased it was in-line with what we've heard all along, he could be back in a few weeks, or his season could be over. He has to be patient and we don't know yet. But every took the "could be over" portion and ran that as the headline.
  6. Probably because: - he's a OF who can play all three spots (but isn't the best CF out there) - who doesn't have much power - around the same age - offensive value is heavily tied to batting average i don't know., the disparity between the walk rate of the 2 players just makes it hard for me to consider them alike. It's not an astronomical difference or anything. The IsoD is 72/58. The BB/PA is 8.3%/6.6%. Dejesus isn't Fukudome and Byrd isn't Soriano. Byrd has a tick more power and a little less patience. I think the similarities are pretty valid. Fukudome a IsoD of 101 and a BB/PA at 13.4%. Dejesus is much closer to Byrd than he is to Fukudome.
  7. It's character suicide. He brought it on himself with the way he handled the situation.
  8. http://deadspin.com/5863962/theres-a-good-reason-somebodys-trying-to-hire-seat+fillers-for-the-b1g-championship-game Deadspin seems to think it's mostly from one section at the 50 yard line and maybe some entity backed out of buying the seats in the last minute. They were probably for the Second Mile program.
  9. We can still, and should, root for the Bears to beat GB. If the Bears beat GB I don't think we'll be worrying about tie breakers.
  10. If they go 15-0 they will try and win 16. If they lose to the Bears they will try and bounce back in the final week so as to not finish on a downward trend. If they somehow lose twice before then they will hopefully be playing for home field.
  11. Interesting, I have an idea though. Why don't they sign Pujols or Fielder to significantly improve things in year 1?
  12. Where there's smoke there's fire and it seems Soriano could be on the move so I'd imagine this is the only thing that could prevent a possible deal, and if he does exercise it I'm going to track him down and kick him in the face with a golf shoe. There's plenty of smoke without fire in hot stove talk. But maybe Theo pulled a reverse Schilling and spent his thanksgiving convincing Soriano to get the hell out of here. Something tells me he would not want to go to Oakland, and probably not San Diego either, for power sapping reasons. But would Washington be interested? They like big splashes and if they don't actually get Fielder they could be adding some real power for next to nothing at least. There's also a chance he could talk to the guy he replaced last time and send Soriano to Baltimore, which likes to do stupid stuff and acquire big names well past their prime.
  13. Of course, I'd expect him to say nothing else considering how he and Martz have been verbally petting each other the past couple years. Maybe he really just wants an internal option to take over, like Shane Day.
  14. where's the source of that quote? Bruce Levine wrote the article: http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/7294530/chicago-cubs-sign-david-dejesus Considering the way many in the media butchered quotes we all heard in the press conferences I'm going to hope this is Levine, athough maybe it's just a stumble by Hoyer.
  15. That would mean only missing Chiefs, Broncos and Seahawks games. If Cutler was coming back for the Packers and Vikings, we could probably go 2-1 in those games and have a pretty good shot. Call me crazy but I think they mean the Bears' 16th game, and not week 16. It says 5-8 weeks, which would mean at least the next four weeks, which includes the GB game.
  16. theo needs to be first on the marquee He's not Larry Lucchino. He doesn't have to stand in front of Hoyer to feel respected. all the more reason to give him the honor
  17. I like Jebadore. The best one I came up with was Theoyer Hoystein, imo. too dairycowish
  18. If 7-9 was going to do it then I think it was after year 6 when he was 7-9 for the second time in 3 years. The Bears aren't really a change for change's sake organization. Wanny had three straight sub .500 seasons. Jauron went 7-9 but that followed 4-12. Ditka went 5-11. At this point, back to back 7-9 seasons might do it, but one? I doubt it.
  19. 5-11 in year one and two 7-9 seasons. Lovie generally gets the most out of the guys. He's just struggled to make the team great (despite having the defense great for 2 years) and he's a bad personel guy. Remember, he had more power in the post Super Bowl offseason, including the draft.
  20. wow, really? is that definitely a thing that happened, or are you speculating? that's pretty brutal if that's what happened. Lots of people speculated that cherington wanted sveum but luchino, at the very least, forced him to drag his feet which left him available for the Cubs to pick off. I think the evidence is pretty strong that upper management wanted more of a name, some flash, and a hot head that wouldn't let guys eat fried chicken.
  21. https://twitter.com/#!/KristinCav/status/141937485780492288 it's back on
  22. yeah, it's not his resume that's the issue, it's his ability to piss anyone and everyone off. he's a czar, and if he'd won a super bowl as a head coach, he may have more leeway, like a parcells, but he didn't. czars play well in the academic world
