  1. He's the easiest, and still allows you to make those other moves you are hoping for. Are you just pretending the Cubs don't have a budget or something? Spend $25 mil a season on Fielder, and that's $25 mil the Cubs cannot spend on guys like Jackson and Kuroda. Obviously they have the budget of the A's now and we're just working our way down.
  2. At least in a salary cap sport there is merit to it. the bears have a lot of room, though, and even if they're up against it, they're going to make a lot of money. why should we even care how the money is spent if #1. it's not our money, and #2. the contracts they sign players to aren't keeping them from competing. Because it's a salary cap league and spending big in one area means you can't spend as much in another. Cutler and Forte are due big raises, and they are going to have to spend for help somewhere on defense. Chris Williams is going to get more money soon as well. Also, since we know the Bears will spend, but won't spend like Jerry Jones or Snyder, I'd rather not have them waste money.

  5. Which is a really silly point since nobody was arguing otherwise.
  6. Loria is really opening up the wallet. Or did the Cubs have to commit to paying that bonus?
  7. http://www.broadstreethockey.com/2012/1/4/2682669/flyers-rangers-fan-fight-genos-steaks-winter-classic Flyers fans assault Rangers fans after came, one of the guys looks to have bragged about it on facebook and then tried to back away from those comments.
  8. If they figured out a way to make the line dominant, instead of barely passable, I'd agree with you.
  9. is the extra wild card thing officially in place for 2012?
  10. Yes, it's rare for guys like Pujols, Fielder, Wilson and Darvish to all be available to the highest bidder in the same offseason. That was the point of striking while there was a chance, because those guys would fit into this team so well, and there is no guarantee you'll get a better option in 2-3 years. A lack of impact free agents becoming available is hardly an excuse to steer clear of impact free agents when they do become available. I just don't understand this obsession with having the most efficient roster. If Hoyer and his boys are any good at their job they will have plenty of young prospects to exploit on the cheap for several years, you don't have to suck on you way to getting there.
  11. Do we even know who the actual contenders are? What about the Rangers? And as of right now, the future is certainly brighter in Toronto and Washington than it is here. Toronto's future lies in trying to outpace the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays.
  12. Or by offering him the best contract. You think Prince has eliminated Seattle and the Cubs from consideration because they're going to be bad next year? No, but he probably would prefer to play for a winner. That's why I said one of ways to get him would be to overpay. You don't have to convince him to come to baseball Siberia. It's Chicago, and the Cubs. It's Wrigley Field. He has a chance to play here for several years, win during that timeframe and maintain his value for a second free agent contract in his 30's.
  13. The Cubs just emailed to let me know they got Volstad, and no mention of Dominguez, so I'm thinking it didn't pan out.
  14. I'm not sure what the point of this thread was to begin with. It seems to strongly suggest that teams should shy away from free agency. But I'm not sure if something like Adrian Gonzalez being acquired via trade in advance of free agency and then signed is a good example of how you should shy away from free agency. It seems to me that if you appropriately differentiate between homegrown prospects and prospects other teams have traded for, and then add free agency and trading for established players already, you are talking about a nearly 50/50 ratio of productive players coming from your own system and productive players being acquired from other systems. Obviously you want to try your best to draft and develop your own, that is something that takes time and will hopefully start sometime before the next draft. It costs money to acquire free agents, it costs money and assets to acquire major league impact players under control. Most teams don't let their most productive hitters get to free agency. They either give them extensions or trade them to another team who signs them to an extension. It's completely disingenuous to say that the lack of free agents producing big numbers means free agents aren't worth anything, because it's very rare to have those guys available.
  15. Anybody else a little turned off by the constant harking back to the glory days of the Cup win, highlighted now by the trip to Philly? Kane can't stop talking about his goal, Toews is buying video of the game on his ipad, every time a former teammate comes into town they talk about it. Maybe it's more of a media thing but it seems to me the team is doing a little bit of living in the past.
  16. You are a horrible reader. Actually I'm a great reader. And based on your performance in this thread, you're the last person who should be judging such things. I'm sure you're an excellent driver as well.
  17. To clarify, I'm not against signing any FAs. I'm against the notion that the only way or even the best way to fix this team is to spend tons on FA. Even the Yankees (the big swinging dicks on the NE) have more regrettable contracts than good ones. WELL THEN WHY DON'T YOU BOTHER READING WHAT PEOPLE ARE WRITING? The future will be handled primarily via trades and development from within. Right now, the only way to help 2012, and to some degree 2013, is via free agency. The Cubs have money and their have been players available at positions where they have needs. Nobody is saying sign free agents and then all our problems will be solved. Nobody is saying the only way to fix this organization is by signing free agents this offseason. Nobody is saying the best way to fix this organization is by spending tons on free agents. I am saying the only way to make a significant improvement in 2012 without damaging the future is via free agency.
  18. Some of us are talking about realistic things. Like being big swinging dicks? Yeah, being the biggest market team in the division is really difficult for the Cubs to pull off.
  19. It has to be about the history and it should be about the history.
  20. He can make as many marginal upgrade trades as he damn well pleases, I don't give a crap about that. I want a freaking free agent or three to actually have an impact on their chances in 2012. It costs nothing but money and does nothing to damage their ability to contend in 2014 and beyond.
