  1. Wow. Looks like it's close to happening Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that the Cubs are close to re-signing Kerry Wood to a one-year deal. Was he spotted at Fenway?
  2. What idiots said the bolded? Yes, obviously most QBs are too risky for top 15. There might be 2 each year that are worth it. RBs should go lower, but there are elite talents out there that are worth a 1st round pick, and even a top of the 1st. It's the Ricky Williams and Cedric Benson types that aren't worth top of the 1st picks in this football environment. You really want a dynamic bck there. Not an old fashioned work horse. Top notch offensive tackles should easily go top 10. Elite LB can go there as well.
  3. 2 He is signed through 2013. So any extension talk should start this offseason and be decided by next winter. Going into 2013 without an extension would be horrible.
  4. Martz's system is designed to get guys like Forte the type of season he had under Martz, which was better than anything he did without Martz and will probably be better than he does in a different system from Martz. I hate it because everything about Mike Tice screams dumb jock. I hate it because it's almost certainly a short-term bandaid that will simply delay Cutler's development. I hate it because it increases the chances that the Bears end up wasting their opportunity to win with a franchise quarterback, perhaps pushing him out the door.
  5. If the Bears are going to be deliberate with the GM search, and not aggressively go after the guy they want, maybe he didn't want to risk it.
  6. They can each suggest a play and Jay can pick which one to use.
  7. It all depends on who the QB coach is.
  8. Oh yeah, he isn't a 200 IP guy anyway. But there's a difference between a 29-30 start 180-190 IP guy and a 130 IP guy who has as many appearances out of the bullpen as he does as a starter.
  9. Dammit. This is turning into a really crappy week.
  10. http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/219175/group/homepage/ Fred took this news hard. http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/media/full/jpg/2012/01/06/semi.jpg
  11. Certainly makes it hard to try and make excuses.
  12. I still look at this recent decrease in IP as something the coaching staff caused unnecessarily with the move to the bullpen, and the management made worse with an overreaction. The performance is down as well, but the lack of IP is as much a Cubs problem as a Zambrano problem, if not more.
  13. Yeah, if it doesn't work well, it's a complete band-aid. If it does work well, it could be a bridge to the future. The Bears are good enough to be playoff contenders next year. And if they are, maybe Tice has one year in this role then he's back into the potential head coach candidate list, college or pro, and his 2nd in command takes over. It's not automatically a disaster, depending on who that passing game coordinator is.
  14. If he was my brother-in-law or something I'd always look at him sideways, but as a baseball player I'll never meet, if it does fall into that category I don't think I'll have much problem hoping he does well on the baseball field.
  15. i think i'm going to be sick. where would the Catholic church be without the Popes? i'm wondering if tice will be handling the day-to-day side while the other guy handles the big picture stuff. If the "passing game coordinator" is some legit up and coming QB coach who can work well with Jay, I'm okay with it. If its' just some Terry Shea clone working on some knockoff version of the Martz system, I'll be completely disappointed.
  16. It's only [expletive] up if he did something wrong. One of three scenarios will come to pass: 1. Castro is guilty and is proven so 2. Castro is legally absolved because of lack of evidence or charges dropped and you have a Kobe/Ben situation where you live with the suspicion/stigma forever, right or wrong 3. The accuser retracts her accusation or is thoroughly discredited and Castro is vindicated I think scenario two is by far the most likely and while better than the first, it's not entirely palatable. I think you could easily find a scenario in between 2 and 3.
  17. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
  18. I don't particularly like the move, but I don't think Theo did this to be cowardly, or blame the Cubs' past suckiness on anyone. Based on his comments he sought advice from nearly everyone close to the situation and made an informed decision. Even though I don't care for the move, I like the willingness to call it what it is. I meant the players, who supposedly kept telling him Zambrano can't come back. Guys like Wood, Dempster..., who's left on this team now? Oops, looks like I misread it. I agree to some extent, but if they asked for the player's opinion and the player gives them an opinion, isn't it up to Theo to sift through what is reasonable and what is just sour grapes? Why ask the player's opinion? To avoid a fried chicken and beer catastrophe.
  19. I don't remember exactly how it went down, but I believe it went something like this: Mark Hatley ran the personel department in 2000/2001 offseason. They knew they were going to replace him with a GM, and so did he, but he ran the draft anyway and took David Terrell and Anthony Thomas. There was some prolonged executive search committee process involving outside search firms and they settled on Angelo sometime after the draft but before the season in 2001. I don't know if they actually missed out on other targets, but the timing was awful.
  20. Hendry's people were still in charge, which explains his overly aggressive approach at the date.
  21. I think I like the Baltimore guy most, but I have no idea. If they get one of these top guys, I'd be very happy with how things went down this offseason. If they wind up with some second tier guy, like Angelo was, I'd be disappointed.
  22. He was also a Yankee and went to 2 WS with them so maybe there's carryover from that. Although he's probably most known for striking out about 30 times in that 2003 postseason.
