  1. If he could put up a .770 OPS in the Southern League at his age, I feel pretty confident he could have put up an .830 or so a level down. I guess that depends on your definition of 'crushing,' but that's about what it took for people to excited about Junior Lake, who is roughly the same age as Vitters. Junior Lake is a raw shortstop. Vitters is a 3B that can't stick at 3B. Who the hell is going to be drooling over that theoretical player?
  2. He was terrible, then had a huge weekend and was promoted. It was bizarre.
  3. Why the hell would people be drooling over him? He's done nothing as a pro. Because if he were playing a level or two lower, he'd have the same long-term potential but he'd have prettier numbers for people to look at. Instead of putting up adequate numbers as one of the youngest players in the Southern League last year, he could have been crushing the FSL. So you are assuming he would have crushed it? To what extent? His game doesn't really lend itself to crushing.
  4. I understand. But it's a 2 way street. Without the 1st round draft pick status, people wouldn't maintain the hope for as long as they have. How much production can you actually add to his numbers? His OBP wouldn't be any higher. Might he have a little more SLG? Give him 40 points of OPS and he's still not that impressive of a prospect when you consider he can't play 3B at anything more than a subpar level. Who is going to be drooling over that? People would still just be holding out hope. Or is Klye pretending that Vitters would have an OPS of 850 and be good at defense?
  5. it really takes an extra shot of power to hit a HR in Petco, I can't imagine how many shots would go into hitting 3 in one game there.
  6. this is pretty dumb. i understand wanting to exercise restraint, but i'm of the opinion that top prospects make their own timetable. when a guy has given up 1 hit and 2 walks in 17 innings at low A, it's pretty damn clear that he's too good for that level. if you want to stick with the limited innings, that's fine, but have him do it at a level where guys might actually be able to hit him. On the other hand, if the goal is to gradually stretch him out then having him do that at a level where he is dominating is a pretty good idea.
  7. Why the hell would people be drooling over him? He's done nothing as a pro. Regardless of draft position, he's not a good defensive 3B and he hasn't produced. If, instead of promoting him every time he had a good weekend they forced him to play full seasons at the lower levels then maybe his numbers would be a bit better. But he's got a career OPS of 750 and a current OPS of 611 in an extreme hitters league. Where would the drooling come in? I think the primary reason people still have hope is that he was a 1st round draft pick and is young. If he was just a 2nd round pick without all the hype and hope of potential stardom and was putting up high 700 OPS while playing a poor 3B. Nobody would think much of him at all.
  8. He was a bit unnecessarily risky with pitch counts early in the season and I think some of the overly aggressive baserunning is foolish, but by and large he hasn't been a nuisance manager and seems to be doing what he can with the crap roster he has.
  9. Byebye April, you sucked balls. Hello May, hope you're better.
  10. Except they talk about Webb is for certain the starting LT. And still talk about moving Williams to LT, presumably as the backup. that makes zero sense. I thought they were saying Webb as the swing tackle/back-up The Biggs article in question states he thinks it's clear Williams will be moved to tackle, that Williams will be used as a swing tackle, and that Webb will be the starter.
  11. this was obvious when the 15/15 plan was announced. Not sure why they are writing this like it's breaking news. You can't do an interleague series at all times and maintain the 3/3 home/home.
  12. And then quickly morphed into an "everybody is too dumb to realize how the playoffs work" discussion.
  13. Theoretically, sure. But you probably won't dominate for long without actually being pretty damn good. The Cubs should have a goal of regularly winning 95 games, not every year of course, but they shouldn't be thinking about trying to be a team that can contend within a weak division or maybe making it into the playoffs on the 2nd wild card. Plus, being a wild card isn't going to be nearly as favorable as it has in the past. They haven't given any indication that that's their plan. I'm not suggesting they have. But people talking about the crapshoot (poor description) of the playoffs and how all that matters is getting in are forgetting about the change in system going forward. There's value in being the #1 seed.

  15. Carimi just didn't play anywhere near enough for me to consider him the best. Although he probably will be going forward. Williams may be a better tackle than Webb, but I don't think he'll be a good one. And with this being his last year under contract I think it's a waste to try and get a mediocre year out of him at tackle and then force yourself to make a decision about his next contract after next year. I'd rather see if you can lock him down as a solid LG and try to actually solve the LT position instead of year to year patchwork.
  16. The article said Williams would most likely be a swing tackle and Webb would start.
  17. It might keep jay alive longer but it won't make a bad line good. And this is a bad line.
  18. Getting into the playoffs is all it takes but there is a difference between being a team that might contend for the playoffs and a team that is nearly a lock to make them. Call it whatever you want, they aren't the same.
  19. There really is very little better than walking out of a Philly stadium after the home team lost.
  20. From the sounds of it there was some serious off field issues preventing him from being drafted. Biggs sort of spelled it out that the guy probably won't make team.
  21. That isn't even close to true. It's ridiculous to even suggest that is the case.
  22. They just drafted serious defensive help with value at need positions. What do you expect?
  23. Brilliant Take the only good lineman from last years team, switch him to a position he is weaker at, and have him backing up. Just a terrific idea.
  24. He's so much fun to watch. If he's even half as good in CF as UZR thinks his first 100 games have been, then I love him as the 5th OF. I like bench players to do something really well. So I'm a fan of him on the bench.
